i think in a lot of areas it was about 95 cents or so

Yeah I remember living just outside Atlanta in Smyrna, GA around 1997-1999 and filling up for around $.97 / gallon. And my car got like 30 miles per gallon. Those were the days. . .Geez I feel like my grandpa complaining about "back in my day a movie was a dime and a popcorn and coke was a nickel!"

hehehehe

it would either be 89 cents a gallon or $0.89 / gallon.

.89 cents > 1 cent. ;)

anyway, that's not why i was quoting you. i quoted you to say, 8 yrs ago, 89 cents / gallon was the norm in NJ also. NJ as expensive as it is to live here has surprisingly low gas prices.

even now 2.29 is not uncommon. i've seen 2.23 and 2.26 in NJ.

Thanks for the fix. Corrected it.

Yeah I really can't think of what could possibly have happened to make that large of a difference in such a little amount of time...sad really. The good ol days :(

my dad had me think about this-

how much did you pay for a quart of oil for your car about 4-5 years ago

no think how much you pay for a quart of oil now...

from what i know the price hasn't changed all that much, and your gas is made form the same crude oil barrel as that same quart of oil for your car

and also i hear the last time a refinery was built was back in the 60's or 70's

$2.13/G is not cheap. You have been brainwashed into thinking it's cheap :D
How much is it in Canada? England? Germany?

$3.00/gallon is still "cheap" compared to the rest of the world.

ZV

I'm still paying anywhere from $0.86 - 0.89/litre here in Toronto, Canada

I remember seeing gas prices a few years ago (maybe 5, who knows) and seeing it be $1.43, thinking to myself, "Wow, I'm glad it's going down." then immediately thinking, "Are you serious, you're happy when it's $1.43?".

There was this place in Medford,MA that has gas as low as $.96 cents/gallon. The lines to get some gas were crazy and they had to bring cops over to tell peopel not to wait in line.

Ga usually has lower gas prices than the rest of the country anyway.

It's been approximately 30 years since the last refinery has been built. Quite a few have actually shut down. Various government and environmental regulation along with NIMBY-ites have made it nigh-impossible to build new refineries. Oil Companies instead work on increasing the capacity of their existing refineries. (sidenote: My first real job was working construction on such a project in Corpus Christi, TX) Refining capacity has increased by around 18% over the years but refineries are still running near capacity.

LOL what I think is funny is how gas companies around San Antonio are still trying to rape people. Case in point. If you were to drive up by where my parents live, a very afluent area, gas rates are hovering around $2.55 for regular and $2.75 for premium.

Come over to my area, still nice but not as bad... $2.35 for regular and $2.55 for premium.

Go over to where I work, still not bad about $.05 cheaper then in my neigherborhood BUT there is this one older gas station here that not part of any major chains. It's $2.03 for regular and $2.13 for premium.

Go to some of the "ghetto" areas and it's under $2.00 for regular now.

Almost a dollar's worth of difference on average for gas stations that are less then 30 miles apart. That's asurd.

wth. its still around 2.50 in NJ. and 2.13 is not cheap. it needs to go down to sub $2 levels before i consider it cheap.

and i dont think anything's gonna come out of these congressional hearings. this is just a facade to keep the public happy. we all know the govt is in bed with the oil companies...hell our current administration is part of the oil company. i bet at the end of the day these congressmen and women and oil execs go out for drinks together and think up the questions and answers for next day's hearings

San Antonio on the south side it. I think 1.89... unless you count various promotions every so often. Like KISS radio station 99.5 sometimes does promotions to have various gas stations sell gas at $.99 every so often for a few hours. Things like that.

Worth mentioning: At the same time that Senators and Congressman are hounding oil execs about the high price of gas, they just killed exploring for oil in ANWR by removing it from a bill.

Note: if gas in the UK were taxed like gas in the US, it'd be around $1.80/gal there. So blame the gov. on high gas prices in the UK, not the oil companies.

We do. There were protests when they wanted to raise the tax on it back in 2001.

I pay just over £1 a litre, thats around $1.80 a litre, but then I have a Company Fuel card and only have to pay 40% of the price I see on the pump for private fuel. w00t!!

but thats still $0.75 a litre tho... :(

Try $4.50 to $5.00/gallon and you get closer to the truth.
