Your girlfriend sounds like she's anal, allot of people are, now for the good part, you are not.

When i was young i participated and enjoyed lots of harmless fun, people seem to forget what Halloween is all about, not only tasty treat goodness, but also TRICKS!
When those tricks hurt other people, whether emotionally or physically, it becomes vandalism and assault, respectively.

I am 26 years old, it has been a long time since i've last smashed a pumpkin or thrown eggs at people or houses, but i enjoy seeing smashed pumkin strewn about the streets in October to this day, it's all part of the spirit.
Someone bought those pumpkins, and someone put the effort into carving them. If the spirit of halloween is about disrespect for others' property and efforts, then it is not worth being a "holiday" (not that it's much of one as it is :p)

As far as people kids crying over their pumpkins being smashed, parents should explain that Halloween is full of tricks, and that Chriustmas is right around the corner, but instead they would rather sheild their kids in nerf body armor and spoil them rotten.
With a kid, you do not downplay their anger and sadness - that's the sort of thing that leads to angst and pissed-offedness at the world: when the world thinks their little of ther problems (and therefore, them). Don't tell me that you would honestly tell a girl who was crying over her totaled pumpkin that "it was going to be gone anyways", just like you don't tell someone who's grieving "well, they were going to die anyways".

However, you do have good points on marriage and relationships. :)

As much as I can appreciate a good bit of fun and pranking, there is a line that you shouldn't cross. Especially when that line involves little kids' hearts broken.

PhasmatisNox, i did not invent Halloween or the Trick or Treat phrase, nor even the giving away of candy thing, go write your congressman on this or something if you feel so strongly about it. Remember it is your perogotive to remain ignorant, i'm not trying ot change you, but stop trying to club people over the head with your misonceptions, it's a waste of everyones time, lol.

water ballons is just an immature act, especially when thrown from a car at innocent people who proably do not want to get wet.

I agree with Citrix on this one.

psst.. NewsMonster, just quit while you're ahead. At this point in the thread it's just become a flame war and there's no point to continue rebutting.

I just read NewsMonster's other posts in the second page... :|

What a troll you are. You can't take a bit of criticism well, instead choosing to insult others in the same way that I did when I was in elementary school. I think you might have a bit of useful stuff in that head of yours, but whatever it's trying to say is encapsulated in so much elitism that your posts have about the intellectual equivalent of place-kicking a chihuahua, except without the potential for momentary entertainment.

*edit*
I just read his crap on the third page, too. I would post a response, but I won't, for the sake of my arterial walls. It's hard to imagine such a pretentious and immature 26-year-old, but it's great to know that NewsMonster is the sort of person I'm sitting atop when I gauge myself in relation to others. :D

Just because he scratches your back doesn't mean you have to scratch his. Especially since he's sh.tting into his other hand and flinging it.

And "rebutting" isn't quite the word I'd use for what he's doing...

Why not? I agree with the first few points he made, why shouldn't I help him out? It's called being nice to someone! (And I used to smash pumpkins! :Q:Q)

Smashing someone else's pumpkin is wrong. It's not yours. It may be fun for you, but it's not fun for the kids of the family that carved that pumpkin. What sort of message does that send them?

Same thing for water balloons. You're having fun at someone else's expense. Not cool.

We've had this debate before, it's not cool.

As for pumpkin smashing, although there's obviously no danger to others it's a pretty low thing to do. I would definitely think less of someone for it. ESPECIALLY since the people who get the most out of pumpkin carving are little kids. Extremely childish behavior, & if I caught somebody doing that on my property I'd likely beat the sh!t out of them.

Viper GTS

Neither one of them is defensible.

My six year old spent about 3 hours intricately carving her pumpkin and was beamingly proud of herself for making it eally cool. When she woke up and found out it had been smashed she literally did cry.

How proud of yourself are you that as a teenager you made children cry?

Your GF sounds a great deal more mature than you considering that at 23 you still don't have any idea that your actions can affect the lives of others. I'd dump her and find someone as childish as yourself, she's obviously to good for you.

Hey buddy- Bet your three-year old doesn't even know wtf that pumkin is, and since it is highly doubtful that you were never a kid, it's time to call bullsh@t. And everyone knows that a three year old can't even intricately wipe her own nose, let alone carve a pumkin. I'm on this guys' side, since it was done after halloween anyway. You don't like it, too bad. Your kid won't remember that pumkin in 10 days let alone 10 years.

Furthermore, your comment concerning the maturity of this guy is astoundingly moronic and made in haste. The reason people do this is partly to get a rise out of others, and see what they will do. Thus, the act affects others. So, in effect, he was doing this because it affects others, not because he doesn't realize that it does.

So back off and go watch another episode of Geraldo, at least when you yell stupid comments at the tv no one can tell you how metally inept you are.

way to jump to conclusions based on 2 1/2 paragraphs moron.

Haha. Exactly. People like this shouldn't be allowed to vote:cool:

Ah, I believe I see the problem. You're 23, you are no longer an adolescent, you are an adult. You have a responsibility as such to exhibit the correct behavior as an adult for adolescents to model. This prohibits you from condoning irresponsible behavior. I drank and did drugs as a teenager, I realize that teenagers do those things, I do NOT condone them and do NOT turn a blind eye when they occur in my presence. To do so would be to not accept the responsibilities of my social role. I believe your girlfriend understands this concept and that you are reluctant to take on the responsibilities inherent to your age and station.

Grow the fvck up.

That's not condescension, it's advice. Take it or leave it.

You're comparing smashing pumpkins and water ballon throwing to underage drinking and doing drugs? Riiiiight.... I can totally see how you've accepted your "social role" in society.

I'm aware of and fulfill my social role. I make no apologies for my past. Your criticism has no basis.

You asked the question, "Am I wrong"?

The answer is yes.

My past is my past, yours is yours. I didn't think we were arguing over who had a better childhood. I'm guessing you did.
Nonetheless, I advocate that you take responsibility for your actions, this includes being able to discourage incorrect behavior even if you have participated in that behavior previously, that's what growing up is about. At this point you have indicated that you're willing to "let kids be kids". If those kids experience no negative impact from thier actions, when will they stop. My point is that YOU have to be able to, like your girlfriend, say "hey that's wrong, cut it out". You shouldn't be angry about it, but you still have to accept the social responsibility of doing so.

Unbelievable. He wasn't arguing about who had the better childhood moron, he was showing how the analogy you made comparing drugs and water balloons was totally idiotic.

Furthermore, if you can't make a simple analogy, how the heck can we take your comment about recognizing your social responsibility seriously? THAT is what fivespeed was saying.

pumpkin smashing is totally lame. you gotta realize that first of all, it makes a huge mess that someone else has to clean up, and something tells me it won't be you. but secondly, somebody's kid spent an entire afternoon carving that pumpkin and they were probably really proud of it. so congratulations on destroying their hard work and ruining their holiday.

as for water balloons, again, you're failing to understand what it's like to be in the victim's shoes. 1. it hurts to get hit by a water balloon at 30+ MPH. 2. you have no idea if they are wearing clothing that could be damaged by either the water or the impact. 3. if you hit them in the face, you could have a lawsuit on your hands (which you would richly deserve).

so how about you let us know your licence plate number so when i see your car, i can cover it in lipstick, pour water in the windows, and let the air out of your tires. hey, nobody got hit and as long as nobody gets hit, there's no harm. i'd just be having a little fun.

and even if all the above weren't true, your GF is always right.

edited to remove death threats. ;)

Super Soakers aimed at convertibles in the left turn lane are far superior to water balloons.

Plus sometimes the damn balloons don't break.

No, you aren't.

It's obvious that everyone in the thread that finds this acceptable is a snot-nosed little kid. Someday they'll grow up and start living in the real world - hopefully they'll get more mature then.

Yes. But it's probably because she grew up and you obviously didn't.
