WTF I had no idea we landed on Venus back in '82.

And every Cosmonaut the Soviets sent up had a near 50/50 chance of being killed in a firey explosion on the launch pad. Their safety record was attrocious.

I don't know, I see more American flags than I see Russian.

It's just mind boggling what Russians have done when you compare the #s. It's UNREAL.

PS. I think Russians have some of the best Engineers in this world. Heck even our Corps agree. Back when I was working at Pratt and Whitney as a Custom Tool designer, our "military" department had more Russian engineers than Americans hehe.

You're correct, I was thinking of the unmanned test rockets they sent up, nearly half of them blew up on the launch pad. Didn't bode well for the manned flights. Either way, it must have been kind of frightening being a Soviet Cosmonaut in those days.

Yeah, like that never happened with the American space program... Oh wait, it did.

As crazy as it may sound, it would be even more frightening to be US cosmonaut based on the results we have.

Which makes the entire Russian side even more incredible.

Their side of the space race is just fascinating and incredible....

Its true the Russians achieved amazing things and that their accomplishments are kind of glossed over in the west due to cold war animosity. But come on man, the moon landings were not fake.

And space travel is just fucking dangerous as hell.

I find the Soyuz program fascinating. From an engineering perspective, it is one of the safest and longest flying spacecraft in existence 9and arguably the cheapest to operate). A simple design from the 1950s that works and is still being modernized and receiving continuous upgrades.

Over 1700 flights since inception with only 2 cosmonauts lost, the last one in 1971 and no losses on the most modern version. Compare to the space shuttle of 14 fatalities out of 132 flights, losing 2 out of 5 orbiters.

Russians have their shit together when it comes to space. Some of the best rockets, best rocket engines and the first space station Salyut was Russian. Today's International Space Station can thanks Russian Soyuz and Progress spacecraft for ferrying astronauts and supplies to the station, I believe even American astronauts have been launched using Soyuz.

Ya, this was back when our government still did things, before every bit of our economy doubling went to the few most rich, and we need 'austerity' instead. Great stuff.

The evil rich people that own Space-X are doing some pretty incredible things without the government helping them.

Didn't Dear Leader cut NASA's funding? Shaniqua must've needed more food stamps.

Reusable verses disposable. We were green even back in the 70's and 80's.

The space shuttle's replacement, Orion spacecraft, is returning to a tried and true design of disposable crew capsules.

If you want to compare Space Shuttle vs Soyuz, even not being reusable Soyuz supposedly was and is cheaper to fly (I dont have the exact financial figures).

I'd give the Russians their due but remember this, what they were BEST at was copying other technology, at the end of WW2 we left 7-8 B29 "superfortress" bombers in Russia that needed to make emergency landings there, the USAF was going to ask for them back but then didn't as they thought the Russians were not capable of building one anyway. The Russian engineers took apart the planes and reversed engineered EVERY part and made their own version, we found out about it at an airshow as shocked USAF generals looked above and saw perfect clones of the B29. Then there is the story of how a Russian diplomat was allowed to tour a Rolls-Royce jet engine plant, he wore shoes with sticky gum boots to gather metal shavings to get samples of the metals that were used in the turbines (it worked) as the Russians had not yet developed a metal that was good enough for the job..

Except that NASA paved the way, as it were, for them by figuring out the basics.

You know, I hate Craig's absurd BS as much as anyone but...

What Space-X is doing is being PAID FOR with NASA money. That sounds like government help to me!

There have only been 117 manned Soyuz flights. By the numbers that gives it a worse safety record than the space shuttle, although modern versions of Soyuz are much safer and more reliable than the original.

I really want to like you. Honestly, I do, but you say the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard almost daily.

You've never met anyone that constantly talks crap about others? I've run across a few over the years. Annoying little twits, but generally harmless.

I didn't either, Zeze. Maybe I knew at some point but completely forgot, but to be fair a two hour landing before burning up is hardly impressive, so I'm ok with having had this gap of knowledge.
