Arrow keys.

I mean, you can reach from the M key to F12 to Numpad-Enter while keeping your hands on the arrow keys. How many keys are you going to use?

In CS the #pad are my weapons and right click is crouch.

In quake right click is railgun :p

I'm just so used to it too.

WASD

although i think al game companies should standardize

WASD, then QE to look, space jump, R reload, F use, etc etc.... its hard to get used to different buttons when you alternate from game to game

I used the arrow keys for the original doom. For quake1 I moved to shift z x and I can still use that or wsad if I ever play a fps. I always used ctrl and alt for weapon-down and weapon-up so both of those are in range.

I remember having my entire keyboard mapped out for quake tournaments with team binds and stuff. Crazy.

I laugh whenever I see somebody us the arrow keys. I also laugh when people don't understand why I say that FPS's are better on computer with keyboard and mouse, the controller just plain sucks for them.

8 forward
4 strafe left
6 strafe right
2 back
7 turn (or lean or roll) left
8 turn (or lean or roll) right
5 reload
0 prone
. action
enter sprint
/*-+13 assign to various functions.
up arrow jump
down arrow crouch
left and right arrow varies game to game, but usually about switching weapons
prnt, scroll, pause, insert, home, page up, delete, end, page down vary by game
; talk
space team talk

That way other than talking my hand never rises from the numpad area and I never need to look at hands.

Wow, that's about the least ergonomic layout ive seen yet...

I disagree, i think it's by FAR the most. No strain ever, regardless of number of hours played. No question about hand position makes it mindless to play by feel entirely.

I know it seems odd at first, but once people try it almost all of them have switched to some variation of it. We recently had a lan party and it cracked me up to watch. The first night only me and my friends used numpad. By sunday at least 20 other people were converts.

Are you two hands really close together? I like a good amount of distance between teh two hands so WASD ends up working well for me. If iw anted that distance while using numpad i'd have to push my keyboard off to the left. And I'd rather move my fingers off to the left and right instead of up and down in awkward positions to reach the other action buttons. I guess you have more flexible fingers than me.

My hands are usually pretty close together actually, i never really thought about it though. I am fairly dextrous (lots of typing, piano, etc), but I'm only 5'10" so I have average finger lengths. Like I said, it seem utterly impossible to someone that hasn't worked with it, but almost everyone who tries it sees the benefits.

I just can't get used to having all the keys around the wasd or esdf variants. You almost never use more than 20 keys in a game, so why have more around your fingers? The ONLY downside for me is the normal number and function keys being so far away, but I almost never need those except to load binds so it all works out.

I think i just appreciate the widerlayout of the wasd. If i went num pad i'd probabaly have 5 as back instead of 2

That's the most common change from my setup.

no matter if 100 or 2 keys are next to your bindings...I never look at the keyboard.

That's because you aren't used to it, or you have a different establishment of skillsets than I do. I've played just about everything (except cs, never really all that into that one), and am fairly good at most. My main game is AA now though, so there's a lot less twitch involved...but I still enjoy a good fragger from time to time.

it might also depend on your keyboard..SOme are really bunched up ..some are really spaced out.

Speaking of which..i am looking for a new keyboard..any suggestions? I just looked at my new PCGAMER and the one in there looked pretty sweet. Only wish i hadnt just bought a mx510..the new one looks awesome.

i use the arrow keys...

0 is reload, 1 is drop weapon, / is use item, ctrl is crouch, shift is prone...and then there's enter, del, end, and 7 in easy reach if I need them...in addition to my 5 mouse buttons.

I hate WASD b/c they're not orthogonal

WASD

I've yet to meet anyone who uses anything else.

This thread was enlightening in that regard, albeit a bit disturbing as well.

There are at least 18 keys within reasonable reach of arrow keys, more if you don't mind stretching.
I personally can't see needing more than 18 keys (excluding movement), so arrow keys work fine. Especially if you have larger hands. It means it's less cramped, and the keys are square to each other, not slightly offset.

That is the main reason I hate WASD. The keys being offset annoys the hell out of me.

that's the thing about wsad that bothers me, the keys are offset and you can easily press the wrong keys since esdf feels exactly the same if you're not looking. plus i have freakishly long alien fingers lol
