False, I'm not an Apple fan boy and I didn't buy my iPhone because of the name. I bought it for the screen size. While a lot of people I know did buy them because it's Apple, still a good half or more bought them for the screen size. I had 3 larger phones the Evo 4G, One X & Note. I ran back to the iPhone because I don't want a large screen. One handed use is super important to a lot of us. Until a 4" high end Android device comes out I won't even consider getting another. That won't happen, but iPhones probably will go 4.3 or bigger in a year or 2. I won't buy one. There's no brand that could ever make me want to use a larger screen phone again.

Uh one handed use? So pretty much you're just using your thumb? Whats wrong with holding the phone with one hand and using the other hand to navigate? Im sorry I cant imagine using your phone with just the thumb is comfortable at all...

I ride the subway to work ~20-25 minutes each way. One hand use is required alot of times during rush hour.

Aah love all the anecdotal evidence being flung around. Why don't I inject some actual statistics to this discussion?

smartphone_usage_by_screen_size.png

The fact of the matter is, the larger screens also bring with it more engagement and content consumption, and as this study shows it outweighs any disadvantages due to bulkyness.

I doubt Woz would say he's an authority on what's right. He's just sharing his opinion because someone probably asked. And people talk about it because Woz is a geek at heart like the rest of us and usually he's echoing what many of us already are saying.

It's more of the op and "Woz Says". The op is trying to use Woz's notoriety as adding weight to his post.

Wouldn't low end smartphones skew those results. Small screen Android smartphones tend to be shitty, which could be a reason for less usage.

Uhh you didn't show that outweighing any disadvantage. Do people here use logical statements at all? There could be a good chance that people who buy larger screen phones do so because they're buying it for content consumption only. There's also the fact there there's no choice unless you buy a craptastic phone. Your conclusion would only be meaningful if a 3.5", 4", 4.5" and 5" phone existed with the exact same specs minus screen size.

But even then how do you show the bulkiness not playing a role at all? There's TONS of people who will say the GS3 is too big for them. Do you disregard that all of a sudden? Someone with large hands could say that too but it's something they could live with. Someone with smaller hands could say that it would mean a lot more to them because even if they had a GS3, it would be difficult to use unless they got hand surgery or something. The fact that is that it varies from person to person, and stop using a one size fits all analogy.

millions of people hold their phone with one hand. while two handed use is ok too, it shouldn't be necessary to have to use two hands.

any iphone user can show you proficient use with only 1 hand.

On the SGS3 it's more difficult.

I am still not sure that tells us anything. You could argue that people that buy the fastest flagship phones probably use more of that type of stuff. We don't have 4.0inch android flagship phones that get heavily marketed, so its impossible to compare.

Nor do we have 5 inch iPhones -- at all!

You spent years constantly complaining about Android so I imagine the fact that it runs iOS played a bigger role than the screen size. After all if you didn't like big phones why did you get the At&t Note over the smaller, cheaper, and more powerful Galaxy S2 i777?

On an iPhone, I can do pretty much everything one handed. I can even bring my index finger around from the back of the phone and do multi-touch, like pinch to zoom. I can pull my phone out of my pocket, flip the camera on, and begin snapping pictures all while maintains a secure grip one handed. There no way I could do that on the GNex or a similar sized phone

Then those one handed idiots are not using their smartphones properly. Its a multi touch screen. I use two hands on all my phones. IP4, droid razr, SGS2, SGS3. Hell, I used two hands on my 2005 tmobile moto-razr. Only *******s use one hand. What, are one handed people gifted? Are they the chosen ones? puhlease. Everyone uses two hands on their smartphones. My niece is a quadraplegic and she uses two hands on her ipod touch.

On the Galaxy S3, using one hand... I can unlock the screen, text a message, dial a phone number, facebook, browse the web, read/type my emails, take photos with the camera, etc. with no effort at all.

The only time I really use 2 hands is to pinch-to-zoom on web pages, use landscape keyboard to type, play games, and to take better photos by holding it with both hands.

My hands are small/average size; I don't know how people can complain about this. Have you guys not tested the Galaxy S3 in person? Are y'all intimiated by the 4.8" screen size?

So Android users, how big is too big? I am genuinely interested in this answer.

Please respond.

There is no too big, it depends on the form factor/screen/how much bezel

lol @ everyone simply using their own personal opinion about screen size as fact. Not everyone wants a 4.8 inch screen and not everyone wants a 4.0 inch screen

Apple should be making a larger screen phone but at the same time Android OEMs should be making small screen flagship phones

That's awesome for you. I can't. I haven't used a SGS3 extensively, but when I try to use it with one hand, the base of my thumb constantly hits the back or multi-tasking capacitive button, depending on which hand. The Galaxy Nexus, which I did use as a daily driver for two months, was pretty unwieldly in one hand. It's also a tad thinner than the SGS3.

Again, it's all personal preference. If you want a big phone, that's totally cool. But don't believe it's ridiculous for someone to think that a SGS3 is too big.

OTH, makers of Android phones may feel they are more likely to be issued a cease and desist order from Apple if they were to make a flagship phone of 3.5-4 inches as Apple owns that form factor. And when I say own I mean actually own the form factor.

It's harder for Apple to convince a jury that the 5.5 inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is a slavish copy of the iPhone, but...

Ummm, I can easily do one handed multi touch on my iPhone. I still can use 2 hands if I so wish, but I never have to. When smart phones are all too big to use one handed is when I stop buying them.

So you've never, liked, sat down to eat or something and used one hand to eat with and the other to browse the internet or read something?

You're making it sound like that's really hard to do this when it's really not at all. You can eat a burrito or sandwich in one hand and use a mobile phone in the other hand easily. Why not lay the mobile phone on the table or floor and use it when you really want to use it?

Of course this will be more difficult if you're in a moving vehicle or walking around, but that's a different story. It's your own fault if you multi-task and drop your mobile phone. Yes, this happens with all mobile phones.

I have a Nexus S, SGS2, and HTC Titan 2 in front of me. That's 4", 4.3" and 4.7" respectively. All 3 have cases. Not ginormous cases either. TPU cases.

It's easy as hell to unlock my Nexus S, turn it on its side and snap a photo with my right hand. Sure it's not optimal photo taking position becauuse my hand is covering the screen, but if I need to grab a quick snap with one hand? Easy. More difficult with the SGS2. Rotating it with 1 hand is more tricky. Then HTC Titan? Much harder.

Maybe I should apologize for having medium-large sized hands while AT is full of fat oversized hands or something.

I'm not saying it's impossible to do it on a large phone. It's harder.

I have 3 phones in front of me right now on my office desk. My gf owns a SGS3. I also have a Motorola Milestone at home (3.7"). I found the Nexus S form factor to be the best, but I'll admit screen size is nice. Yeah the SGS3 looks nice, but it's a tradeoff. You either get a bigger screen or you lose ergonomics. For me ergonomics is important enough that it kicks in at 4.8" and I'll stay with my SGS2. My Nexus S may be a better form factor, but the SGS2 has so many things nicer I'll take it.

To prove my point... I just took some photos of me using the Samsung Galaxy S3 with my right hand.

Top 3 photos and 1st photo on the bottom shows me doing random tasks.

Then I have a photo of me holding my car keys to show you how small/average my hands are.

The last photo shows you what camera I was using for this test. Sony NEX-5N mirrorless camera
