Wow, paid maternity leave??

Popularity doesn't make right.

Trying to get the people you want to breed to have children is eugenics.

those programs don't target subsets of the population, so all your post has done to show us is that you don'thave a clue how paid-maternity programs work. in short, you are talking out of your rectum.

That web site is full of SHIT. It makes other bogus claims like smoking isn't banned in US school.

Smoking has been banned in school for students AND teachers basically my entire life. I came up in the 80s and there were NO smoking lounges for teachers and absolutely no smoking for students.

I had a principal smoke in his office when I was in 3rd grade so it definitely varies. That was in the early 80s.

Popularity doesn't make right.

It's not wrong or right, it's something most places have democratically chosen to provide because they think it's worth it. 30+ weeks might be excessive, but the average seems to be around 14-16 which seems like a reasonable burden to bear to apparently everyone but the Americans (though likely a majority of americans would actually support this - failed democracy).

You are welcome to go live in those so-called healthier societies.
So just be sure to remember our way of thinking here in the US: If you see something that can be done better, don't look for ways to improve it. Just leave it go, and walk away. That's progress!

Or if someone else has a system that's working well, do not, under any circumstances, ask them for advice. Either keep struggling through it yourself, or simply give up.

I don't know why the whole US is red. I know for a fact that NJ offers 12 weeks of partial pay for maternity leave. It's part of the short term disability program. These graphs make the US look worse than it is since they don't take into account each state. In other countries states probably don't have the rights as states in the US does.

If I... me, the person typing....were an employer, such as a business owner, I... me.... would voluntarily offer the benefit of maternity leave (voluntarily meaning not by force or government mandate) because BECAUSE.... I want skilled professionals to have children so they can combat the armies of low IQ mouth breathers having huge BIG litters of children subsidized by taxpayer money who will also likely end up as stupid mouth breathers so this doesn't happen:

Apparently the reason they benefit society is because they encourage professional women to have children.

How is that not eugenics?

It's one thing to do something to improve our situation. It's something completely different to change our whole way of life because you think the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence.

I see no reason that I should be forced to monetarily support feminist ideology.

You underestimate the reach of the US govt. Some countries have far greater autonomy on the state/province and even city/town/village level. Your constitution has allowed the feds to suffocate the states.

But that's about all you can say about it. You either want to or you don't, but if enough people do want it, then it should be provided, otherwise your government is serving the interests of the wealthy over the general population. Why can't the American people get what they want? What's going on in Washington?

Years ago I worked for a company that had paid maternity live and extremely generous benefits for people with kids.

They gave something like 15 extra sick days per year for EACH kid, and your vacation times reflected the number of kids, something like 3 extra days of vacation per child.

It was disgusting how many parents clearly abused these policies.

So many lazy people taking random sick days, there was one guy with literally 10 kids and someone discovered he only had to work something like 4 months out of the year. He would come in a couple days a week and that's it.

Seeing people hugely abuse these policies is what makes me so against them. I honestly don't even think women should get paid maternity leave, or that the state should require private companies to 'hold' their jobs.

The result of all this is women tend to look toxic for many critical positions.

It's very risky to hire someone who goes through drastic hormone changes for 9 months before leaving for 3 months.

Why are you such an obtuse, narrow-minded person? Is it your upbringing, something that was inculcated in your malleable mind as you grew up?

Moreover, why are you deliberately muddying the waters? OK, so let's say you really saw one person with 10 children abusing the system. If you had taken any introduction to statistics course, at any time in your life, you'd know that you cannot establish rules based on exceptions (aka "outliers"). Let's face it, the number of people with more than five children is increasingly smaller in this day and age - even in militant anti-contraception societies like yours.

Not to mention the other implications of your myopic statements. "I honestly don't even think women should get paid maternity leave" - really? You think having kids and raising them in their first year of life is something easy or simple? You think that not having any resources of your own, during this time, will be beneficial for your state of mind and the child's life? Especially since your popular culture also discourages having extended, multi-generational families living under the same roof (which would allow grandparents to raise kids, if both parents have to go to work)?

I must admit that sometimes I feel that some people in the U.S. might as well be aliens... there's so much selfishness and disdain for basic human rights, and so little solidarity, it makes me shudder. I don't think I've seen so much excessive individualism in any other culture I came in contact with.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There are no guaranteed 60K a year jobs, no ½ year bonus for having a kid, and people have to take responsibility for their own actions.

Actually in Canada you get child tax benefits for having kids too

The Canada child tax benefit is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under age 18

Yep. I have no doubt that Canada or Norway is a "superior" society if you are lazy, poor, or a woman who thinks she is entitled to the same career advancement as a man despite taking year-long paid sabbaticals.

For the rest of us though...

Yes, Canada is better for women and the poor, but you can't be lazy and collect, you have be actively searching for work, and this is strictly enforced by the social workers.
If you are employable, you have to turn in lists every month of the places you have applied and the social workers check them out before you get a check

There is a plane leaving every day. Make sure you wave at the Statue of Liberty on your way out.

She is busy at the moment

Yes, they're big on their individualism. This video (at around the 33 minute mark) explains americans quite well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=pLrmK8x27ro#t=1960s

Its called a husband.

If you want to be a strong independent woman be my guest. But that means you actually need to be INDEPENDENT, instead of using the state to forcibly extract my money to pay for your life choices.

Right🙄

Because expecting other people to pay for your life choices isn't selfish in the slightest.

And there it is. Corporate profits over the raising of the next generation in a manner that creates humans that aren't degenerates.

I don't even think we can count the number of posts bitching about kids and thugs and criminals from the people sucking on the cock of corporate profits.

Well sure, we can just put the 26 weeks maternity pay ($18,000) right in the list with:

Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.

Free college education.

One trillion dollars in infrastructure spending now.

One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests

Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live.

Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the "Books." World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the "Books." And I don't mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period.

Outlaw all credit reporting agencies.

Or you could just work out a sort of more balanced system instead of going from one extreme to the other

edit- I always wonder why some posters in P&N can't see a middle ground, they just jump right to craziness

Canada - Its America, but how it should be (except for Quebec)

If you want to be paid for having sex, become a prostitute or get on welfare like everyone else. Putting the burden on companies for your whorish ways just isn't going to fly in America.
