Gotta love HS crap. Nothings changed since the 70's.

Actually almost everything has changed. No one would have been suspended for something so silly in the 1970's. The schools were not being used as publically funded day care centers back then.

Oh please...There was a kid who got suspended for having a loud muffler. There was a kid who got suspended for painting a rock another schools colors. There was a kid who got suspended for participating in an anti-war rally on a week end.

The list goes on and on. As far as the "schools were not being used as publically funded day care centers back then," I quote my Assistant Principal: "I'm not being paid to educate you, I'm being paid to keep you off the street!"

Yup, things sure have changed

Sorry guess it was different where you grew up then. I graduated in 1974 and that attitude was not the norm in Fairfax County at that time. They only suspended students for serious things. Hell, before they made it ok to smoke outside the schools the first time you got caught smoking in a bathroom netted you a letter home to your parents, not a suspension. Ditto for skipping class or any number of other rule infractions. 99% of the time you would receive detention and your parents would not even be involved unless you did something truly serious.

I graduated in 2003, and we never had any absurd suspensions. A kid got suspended for vandalizing a wall on school grounds (with messages like "Mrs **** can go fuck herself"). He didn't realize he was on camera :p

I assume that the school in the article probably would have lynched someone for doing that

I think he got off with a slap on the wrist. If it were up to me, I'd have him behind bars for life and even possibly death row. Today he's buying skittles, tomorrow he'll be dealing drugs.

I know, right? It's commonly known that Skittles are a gateway candy. If it had been a nice, wholesome candy like M&Ms, I'd have no problem with it.
haha damnit, that's what I was going to say

Dumb.

But technically they did ban candy sales in 2003, which I think is idiotic but that's another discussion.

For all those parents out there, do you still wonder why your kids say "I hate school!" everyday?

How can you be class vice-president and not know about that rule?

Yeah, this definately seems extreme for just having candy at school. What are we preparing our children for? To live in a democratic society, or a police state? I see this trend in schools, this zero tolerance abuses as very dangerous. Those kids are going to grow up some day, and see nothing wrong with excessive punishment for minor offenses. What might they do to their own children? What if they go into law enforcement? Very bad thing we do to our kids allowing such things to occur.

such a fucking joke, we're gonna kick kids out of school cause they eat candy? Do they refund the parents tax dollars for the school that kid was forced to miss for no reason? nah

It's pretty bad when that story (which is quite short in length) has cliff notes at the top. Of course they call them "story highlights". Do you really need highlights for such a short article?

wow. wtf is wrong with the education system? K-12 education here is already in the gutter, and now we have kids getting suspended for candy. How about the school admins stop d!cking around and actually do something beneficial?

Safe? How is buying candy not safe? Why is it that it is the school's job to regulate candy and children? It should be the parents job to tell their children not to eat candy in excess.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

"Wellness policy"? Does this sound a little too much like Demolition Man to anyone else? "Be well John Spartan."

Reminds me of the Simpson's episode where sugar was banned from the town.
