obama has nothing to do with the people of north korea starving.

Over the past few decades, the failed policies of north korea has brought the country to its knees. NK did this to itself, obama had nothing to do with it.

If you remember, all the Fox hosts stated their congratulations for that... for Bush. Didn't mention Obama.

He just happened to be in office when Bush's plan - which included disbanding the unit hunting for bin Laden at the CIA before Obama made it a priority - got him.

Given that this has happened at least once a term for all the previous presidents back through Carter; it is better to see what happens 6 months from now rather than jump for joy.

Offers to talk if aid is provided.
Aid is provided, talks are stopped for one reason or another.

Rinse and repeat.

Possibly with a new leader in NK, this may be different. Not holding my breath.
 
The U.S. was getting pretty close in negotiations prior to Kim's death. Negotiations were suspended for a few months, then resumed.

Contrast this with calling North Korea part of an "axis of evil." The views of many nations toward the U.S. and its citizens have increased greatly over the past few years, thanks to better diplomacy.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
North Korea also did this in the 90's and yet we are here today.
I predict that once they get the food/oil aid to survive their current famine crisis, they will be back to their old ways.

Let's see where we are on this issue in 10-20 years.

Before his death, the US and North Korea were close to such an agreement, which appears to meets US preconditions for restarting the six-nation talks suspended three years ago.

Very true. If this works though, if will make the world a much safer place for all, including U.S. citizens. What would be funny, if it wasn't so pathetic, is that in about 3 years, we'll have people in this forum saying "I can't believe we give food aid to NK. We should bomb them back to the stone age. We've got hungry people in the U.S."
 
Guys, the purpose of these talks in general is not to actually get North Korea to stop, it is to impede their nuclear progress as much as possible. We know we can't actually stop them if they want to make them, but if we are able to delay their ambitions for a few years for some food and oil aid, it's worth it.

Perhaps with new leadership this will be different. I doubt it, but I hold out hope. It's certainly worth a shot though, the downside is small and the upside is huge.

Although going by NKs previous actions, I wonder how long it will last? They play nice for a little while, and then out of the blue, throw another temper tantrum and walk away from the table. Definitely a postitive step in the right direction though. im still gushing over him putting troops in northern Australia as a direct sign against Red China. Props to you President Obama!!!! :thumbsup:
 
As much as I like Obama's overall foreign policy, I think it's too early to make any comments on this. Part of this has to do with the regime change but we can't say how much of it is due to that because the political structure and the amount of power that Kim Jung Un has is probably unknown. Plus, given what we know of North Korea's foreign policy, we definitely will have to wait and see how long and truthfully they will stick to such a conviction.

I do find it interesting that this was done in the absence of the Six Party Talks. It was my recollection that North Korea was more amenable with negotiating directly with the US but that the US at the time was insistent on going through the Six Party Talks. If so, that does show a policy change on the part of the States though I would prefer that such an agreement involved the other nations.

I think a more interesting target of the US policy recently has been the progress done in Myanmar. Bringing Burma out to the world and reforming the regime with US ties would be an interesting shift in South East Asia.
