I don't give two shits what my waiter is making. It's his choice to fucking be there so if he doesn't like it he can piss off and find a real job.

In any case, I'll tip if the wait staff does something that deserves a tip and I won't if they don't. Doing your job, customer service, is not tip-worthy. That's your job.

A good example is a waiter who isn't waiting my table noticing that my table needs service and doing something about it. I'd neglect to tip my designated waiter and would hand that guy a couple bucks.

We have been through this in another thread about wages.

If the employees gets tips, the employer does ever not have to pay minimum wage. Tipping helps supplement the persons wages. To me its a performance based wage - do good, get a good tip.

In many states this is not true.

If it's deserved, yes. Wouldn't bother me how much my waiter/server makes, the amount I tip isn't dependent on how much they make.

Here in Oregon, there is no lower minimum wage for wait staff. Minimum wage for wait staff is the same as anyone else getting minimum wage in any other job.

If the bartender knows you don't tip be prepared to be ignored when the bar is busy and to get weaker drinks.

That's not the case over here, over here you often can't tip at bars if you wanted to, more often than not if you try they will put the money in a charity pot. It's a bizzare concept but over here bartenders do the job they are paid for, without asking for more money from people who aren't their employers.

If you tried to tip in a busy bar in London you would get some odd looks.

Giving somebody money they didn't earn won't make me feel better about anything.

You should troll less. It would help.

I'm just trying to help you kind sir.

I'm saying that doing something nice usually improves one's mood. You really should try it one time. It could change your whole life!

Bunch of cheap asses. Who cares if he makes $10/hour. If he's making that much it's probably a really nice place and he's doing a lot of exotic stuff, like bringing your soup out in a vase and adding creme fraiche to the top, or making your salad at the table, and things like that. It's customary to tip any service person that does a good job for you, and I will continue to tip around 20%, thank you.

I still don't get why tipping is such a big problem for people. It's like people go to sleep wondering if the 5 bucks they gave someone was morally or socially, correct. People acting like a bunch of hardasses over a couple of bucks.

This.
You can't survive on $10/hour. I would still tip 20% like I always do.

Do you mind people drawing food stamps and living in public housing because their employer does not pay enough? But you probably do not mind paying taxes to support those social programs do you?

At least with a waiter, their trying to work for their money, instead of living off the government.

Everyone deserves a good standard of living. If a waiters employer is too cheap / can not afford to pay a liveable wage, I dont mind helping out.

People who work at Applebee's make $10 an hour starting, most places here start out at $10 an hour. A really nice place will pay a lot more than $10 an hour.

When someone is really nice I don't mind leaving a nice tip to match, a pound or two maybe. It does feel nice.

i don't know why it's so hard for the euros to get the concept of tipping. It gives you, the customer, direct control over your server's earnings and gives them incentive to want to do a good job for you. If you're a shitty waiter, you don't get any tips and you find a different line of work. If you're a good waiter, you do a good job and make good money. Everybody wins, except the bad waiters.

In Europe, one of 2 things happen; the bad waiters are coddled and it turns into a bad experience for the customer or the restaurant can't afford enough waiters so there is 1 waiter per 20 tables and it turns into a bad experience for the customer.

The difference is over here, it's not expected good waters get extra money in tips, bad waiters get nothing, in america it's "that was average I'll only tip 10%" insanity. In the UK if you get a tip you have earned it, it's not expected. We have a greater control over it as it is not expected.

I don't hate america I hate corporatism and greed, and America and much of the rest of the world is full of it.

So what do you propose? Fixed wages? Limits on corporate profits? Socialism? Full on Communism?
