It's interesting that more places don't add gratuity by default onto the bill like they do in most restaurants in Europe.

Hugh, where did you see that in Europe? I am from France and I have never seen that there.

This.

No reason carrying food to a table should entitle someone to thousands of dollars per year of tax-free income.

Tax-free income?

You are eating at shitty places my friend.

I don't eat at the WalMarts of the Food Industry because my wife and I are both good cooks and can do a decent dinner at home for many nights.

Still we like to go out and eat. We want the same level of food as at home and not have to serve ourselves.

Our waitstaff usually wants to get to our level. Sure if most of your waitstaff still has acne or driving their dad's car then they are probably shorting their tips on their taxes. This is not letting them live high on the hog though, probably more like hundreds of dollars and maybe a difference of $100-200 in taxes paid.

Most of my waitstaff probably owns a home even if sharing it, to do that they need to report those tips and as a result pay taxes on them.

You truly are dangerous to the average person.

That's how every one of his posts turn into. When he asks for help it still turns out that way because he doesn't like the advice he gets.

Once a douchebag, always a douchebag. I still have all the MS paint & photoshop pictures from like 6 or 7 years ago when the whole forum used to make fun of him constantly.

Just take this as advice. You have nothing to offer me. It's amazing you can even get through the average day IMHO...any advice you could give is worthless to anyone that has even two dimes to rub together.

I am sorry for that.

That's really just awesome to me. Shows how little their time is worth.

Hardly Nik, but time and time again you cry that you are just the martyr.

I pay what's on the bill. If you want more money, charge more. Tipping is a silly practice and I would absolutely not participate in it.

How many roommates do you have now? I am sure the business sector is quivering over your post.

I'm certain they're not, considering I don't know anyone who would leave any tip at all for anything less than exceptional service with a happy ending.

I don't have any roommates. I have a couple of flatmates, but we sleep in different rooms.

What kind of cheap bastard would withhold a tip because the waiter made a poverty-level income? Jeez - some people will use any excuse to justify their own cheapness. If you are unwilling or unable to tip you should stick to Taco Bell, ya cheap fucks.

There's a reason why so many people try to be bartenders and waitresses, because they DON'T make poverty level income. Even without tips, in 90% of the country they make minimum wage. You earn tips plain and simple.

lolz...again we get it..in your country you don't tip.

Still you graduated right, but you have to have roomies....or flatties as you spin them.

That's motherfucking sad.

My post was in response to the question posed by the OP. I know what waiters and bartenders make - I've done both jobs. That is in my distant past (I've been an attorney for 13 years), but I still consider anyone who defends his "right" not to tip a complete jackass. If you don't want to tip, don't eat or drink out. Otherwise I reserve the right to call you a cheap bastard for not tipping.

Who said "have to"? It's cheaper to live with other people, freeing more of my income for other things. Most people I know my age flat for this reason, and you're the only person I have ever come across who has a holier-than-thou attitude about it.

But your time is worth so much yet you squander it on here trying to belittle other people? Makes sense.

It's multitasking here. not deep research into crap.

BTW I am studying stuff and posting...don't hate me for increasing my income .

Like you cry about tipping in kiwiworld, in the US most that have graduated college stop living with other people.

"freeing up your income" is what you do when you stop putting away to savings so much.

You end up living with people when you don't have so much free income.

The only 'adults' I know that roommated were also living in a 20k sq ft mansion on the beach. six way split and still a bigger 'sq ft' per person than most out there.

They had awesome fucking parties each week too.

Now that would be worth it.

Sharing some apartment no way!

Yeah, people are lining up to make this kind of money:

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Bartender/Hourly_Rate

Most people become bartenders and waitresses because it's an easy job to learn.

Exactly, it's a easy job, menial labor. They get paid minimum wage just like everyone else in practically every save for like 3 or 4. Just like with any job, if you don't make enough you get another one, just like we've all done. Millions of other people seem to be doing fine with minimum wage jobs without tips that make infinitely less than servers do.
