Yes, you paid the full price of a LCD with w * h pixels, but instead you got w * h - 1 pixels. That's a breach of their sales contract by providing you with a substandard unit.

LOL I have to remember that one if I ever buy an LCD that has a bad pixel.

Well, lucky me, the new version had no dead pixels. I have been lucky since then, and all 3 LCD's I have bought have had zero dead pixels. But next time I get an LCD, and it has a dead pixel, it will go back in favor of a different one.

You can return an older unit for a new version? :Q How the heck? Is there a time limit for this cause I bought my dual Samsungs last March but would like to upgrade them. Any info on this?

Unless it was a REALLY poorly placed pixel, I wouldn't return it.

My friend just paid me back for our last two years of friendship by buying me a Dell 2001FP. It has a single messed up pixel dead-square in the middle of the screen. Of course I couldn't say anything about it since it was free, but I still walked up to him, gave him a nickel, and started my rant about how I got a bum deal :D

If you got the Extended Warranty (CompUSA calls it Technology Assurance Plan, best buy I think just calls it a warranty), then yeah. Sometimes they will be stubborn, but if the model you have is no longer made (or you got a sales guy that doesn't care), then you can get one of equal or greater value.

Damn, I don't have the extended warranty because Samsung has 3 year manufacturer warranty and have been great with warranties so I thought I wouldn't need it... oh well :(

My 2001FP has 1 dead-white pixel in the right-center of the screen, and a less noticeable one in the top left. I forget they are there unless I am focusing on that specific area of the screen, with the right color background.

I don't have dead pixels but I did get a stuck pixel that was massaged back to life. It was pretty damn annoying being in the middle of the screen. I don't expect anyone to keep a new monitor they bought with dead pixels. Some people have varying degrees of tolerance towards little annoyance like this, so you cant label everyone ignorant just because you are OK with it.

BS. It isnt whether or not your accepting of it. Its the fact that its IN WRITING the number of dead pixels you must tolerate. If you buy a soft drink that says ON THE CONTAINER "De caffinated" dont drink it and then bitch cause theres no caffiene.

I hate people who know the terms, buy something then complain about it even though it meets the manufacturers specs. Nothing but ignorant retarded asses

As such, thats why I havent bought an LCD yet. If I buy one, I want it to have 100% on the pixels. I wouldnt tolerate dead pixels. Manufacturers allow a certain percentage of dead pixels, I know that, therefore I wont buy one. Simple isnt it?

Of course they will, thats because companies have yet to perfect the art of making perfect wire matrixes (I beileve thats how you would refer to it). They are getting better as we are seeing alot of companies offering "Dead-Pixel" warrenties, saying that we should accept dead pixels is utterly retarded.

Why is it retarded?? Are you FORCED to buy an LCD? Of course not. Either buy it and live by the terms and conditions set forth, or DONT FREAKING BUY IT.

some people in this thread don't realize that the reason LCDs still cost so much is that there is a ton of cost involved in the CS side of things dealing with people that want to return their displays that have 1 stuck-on pixel. LCD manufacturers could sell only the perfect displays but they would become even more expensive because of the incredible waste. If the dead pixel(s) aren't central and aren't too obvious, IMHO they should refuse to exchange the monitor.

" BS. It isnt whether or not your accepting of it. Its the fact that its IN WRITING the number of dead pixels you must tolerate " - You're thinking about the manufacturer's warranty, not the return policy of BB, CC, wherever...

When I bought mine at BB, they sure as hell did'nt make me sign some paper that said, if less than 8 pixels you live with it. They have liberal return policies for a reason, do you think samsung or sony or whoever is going to refuse a return from a BB or CC?? No.....

To the OP - return the monitor, and feel free to tell them it has a dead pixel - ask them to check the next one before you leave the store.

I bought an LCD for less than $300 (from amazon, IIRC, after rebate), and it has a single dead pixel. Was I heartbroken when I found out? Absolutely. Did I return it? Nope. What If I got an LCD with 7 dead pixels?

If it were possible to make LCDs absolutely perfect, then I would have complained. However, at the present time it isn't (while keeping the cost LOW to the consumer mind you), so I'll take my dead pixel and enjoy my desktop space (physical), thank you very much.

i consider knowingly selling consumers defective products is rather sleazy:p return it. good reason why one should only buy lcds from b&m, its a cr@pshoot.

the warrantee is what specifies how many dead npixels they tolerate. stores have no such policy.

I'd say if they would exchange it for a brand new fresh one, I'd do that, otherwise I'd just keep it rather than go without a flatpanel LCD.

Definitely if there is a stuck (on) pixel...if it's dead...I'd think about it. I voted yes.

I have two stuck green pixels in the lower right on my 2001FP.

I never would have noticed them if I didn't use DPT.

I still don't notice them, even if I'm trying to find them. Have to be like 3 inches away from the screen :p

I have one towards the left upper corner. doesn't bother me at all. Odds are you might get one with more dead pixels when you return it. Unless it is right in the middle and stuck on bright red or something... I'd just say keep it.

jars of mushrooms can legally have tons of maggots in them, and yet no one complains... but one dead pixel and the whole fscking world comes apart and the product is 'defective'

I bought a laptop as a birthday gift last week. It has one dead pixel. (I bought it from Best Buy due to a time crunch, otherwise would have gone Dell online). I went back to Best Buy with it on Tuesday. The 'tech' people approved the exchange. However, they didnt' have any of that model in stock. As the girl at the register is trying to figure out what to do, the manager finds out about the exchange and starts yelling at me about how they won't exchange it over one dead pixel. I explained that it was a birthday gift and it needed to be perfect and that it wasn't my fault they sold me a defective product less than 48 hours previously. I also mentioned that TWO of HIS employees had approved the exchange. He got red in the face and said, "Well, you didn't buy the extended warranty so it's your fault. We're not exchanging it. If you want another laptop, you'll pay the 15% restocking fee and the price difference for a higher priced model." I lost my temper at this point and ripped into him. I'm no longer welcome at that Best Buy. haha Oh well, there's plenty more of them in the Phoenix area. Didn't get the laptop replaced though. :(

Uh.. It's in the warranty TOS.

Depending on where he bought it from, if he tells them he is returning it because it has a dead pixel, they may tell him to screw off.

Seriously. This thread is full of retards. I don't even own an LCD and I know how the dead pixel thing works.

The return policy depends on the manufacturer. Sure, if you take it back to a place like BB they're going to take it back.. and probably sell it open box, unless you tell them it was "defective", which would be a lie.

Go look at NewEgg. Every LCD they sell has a disclaimer "Replacement or refund for 8 or more DEAD PIXELS ONLY!"

I think an LCD with no dead pixels is a rarity.

Sounds like the time I brought back a SANDISK Compact Flash card to Staples. It was supposed to be a 256MB card. Upon opening I discovered that the sticker on the front was falling off, and it said Canon on the back (with Sandisk in little letters in the corner). It turned out to be a 32MB card - somebody obviously switched them at the plant. My guess is the Canon cards are made in the same plant (as it also says Sandisk on it). Anyway, the store wouldn't take it back - they said it couldn't be the same card that came in the package as it said Canon on it.

I told the manager I would "motherfvck them to everybody I know" and left.

But I digress...
