Yes, you paid the full price of a LCD with w * h pixels, but instead you got w * h - 1 pixels. That's a breach of their sales contract by providing you with a substandard unit.

My first LCD had three dead pixels, all stuck "on." I kept this LCD for about a year or so. The pixels bothered the hell out of me, but I was never the wiser. Then one day I learned that Best Buy's extended warranty works in a similar way as to Comp USA's, where I can return the old unit for a new "updated" version. Well, lucky me, the new version had no dead pixels. I have been lucky since then, and all 3 LCD's I have bought have had zero dead pixels. But next time I get an LCD, and it has a dead pixel, it will go back in favor of a different one.
If you got the Extended Warranty (CompUSA calls it Technology Assurance Plan, best buy I think just calls it a warranty), then yeah. Sometimes they will be stubborn, but if the model you have is no longer made (or you got a sales guy that doesn't care), then you can get one of equal or greater value.Originally posted by: Xiety

You can return an older unit for a new version? :Q How the heck? Is there a time limit for this cause I bought my dual Samsungs last March but would like to upgrade them. Any info on this?

LCDs by nature will have dead pixels. Each brand/model has an "acceptable limit" of dead pixels. The cost it would take to ensure that every unit produced had absolutely NO dead pixels would drive the price of LCD screens up tenfold.
My 2001FP has 1 dead-white pixel in the right-center of the screen, and a less noticeable one in the top left. I forget they are there unless I am focusing on that specific area of the screen, with the right color background.

I don't have dead pixels but I did get a stuck pixel that was massaged back to life. It was pretty damn annoying being in the middle of the screen. I don't expect anyone to keep a new monitor they bought with dead pixels. Some people have varying degrees of tolerance towards little annoyance like this, so you cant label everyone ignorant just because you are OK with it.

Of course they will, thats because companies have yet to perfect the art of making perfect wire matrixes (I beileve thats how you would refer to it). They are getting better as we are seeing alot of companies offering "Dead-Pixel" warrenties, saying that we should accept dead pixels is utterly retarded.

BS. It isnt whether or not your accepting of it. Its the fact that its IN WRITING the number of dead pixels you must tolerate. If you buy a soft drink that says ON THE CONTAINER "De caffinated" dont drink it and then bitch cause theres no caffiene.
I hate people who know the terms, buy something then complain about it even though it meets the manufacturers specs. Nothing but ignorant retarded asses
As such, thats why I havent bought an LCD yet. If I buy one, I want it to have 100% on the pixels. I wouldnt tolerate dead pixels. Manufacturers allow a certain percentage of dead pixels, I know that, therefore I wont buy one. Simple isnt it?
" BS. It isnt whether or not your accepting of it. Its the fact that its IN WRITING the number of dead pixels you must tolerate " - You're thinking about the manufacturer's warranty, not the return policy of BB, CC, wherever...
When I bought mine at BB, they sure as hell did'nt make me sign some paper that said, if less than 8 pixels you live with it. They have liberal return policies for a reason, do you think samsung or sony or whoever is going to refuse a return from a BB or CC?? No.....
To the OP - return the monitor, and feel free to tell them it has a dead pixel - ask them to check the next one before you leave the store.

Depending on where he bought it from, if he tells them he is returning it because it has a dead pixel, they may tell him to screw off.
Seriously. This thread is full of retards. I don't even own an LCD and I know how the dead pixel thing works.
The return policy depends on the manufacturer. Sure, if you take it back to a place like BB they're going to take it back.. and probably sell it open box, unless you tell them it was "defective", which would be a lie.

I went back to Best Buy with it on Tuesday. The 'tech' people approved the exchange. However, they didnt' have any of that model in stock. As the girl at the register is trying to figure out what to do, the manager finds out about the exchange and starts yelling at me about how they won't exchange it over one dead pixel. I explained that it was a birthday gift and it needed to be perfect and that it wasn't my fault they sold me a defective product less than 48 hours previously. I also mentioned that TWO of HIS employees had approved the exchange. He got red in the face and said, "Well, you didn't buy the extended warranty so it's your fault. We're not exchanging it. If you want another laptop, you'll pay the 15% restocking fee and the price difference for a higher priced model." I lost my temper at this point and ripped into him. I'm no longer welcome at that Best Buy. haha Oh well, there's plenty more of them in the Phoenix area. Didn't get the laptop replaced though.![]()
