I think an LCD with no dead pixels is a rarity.

its not a rarity at all. dare i say most don't have dead pixels atleast the ones i've seen at friends/family... and well 15" displays are garranteed to have none. they have different standards for different sizes right now.. its convoluted.

That depends on where the pixel was, and how it had died (one color, all colors, etc).

And for those who say no dead pixels are rare, I have 4 LCD screens (three IBM laptops and a Dell 1901FP) and none have a dead pixel. Either I'm lucky, or lack of dead pixels is not all that rare.

Anyone under the assumption that "lots of LCD monitors have dead pixels" are deluding themselves. The company that I work for has dozens of LCD screens at work (Lots of laptops, and now LCD monitors for the managers and high-end servers), and I've only seen 1 of them with a dead pixel. Even though Fry's return department is evil, I'd still return that sucker.

I explained that it was a birthday gift and it needed to be perfect and that it wasn't my fault they sold me a defective product less than 48 hours previously. I also mentioned that TWO of HIS employees had approved the exchange. He got red in the face and said, "Well, you didn't buy the extended warranty so it's your fault. We're not exchanging it. If you want another laptop, you'll pay the 15% restocking fee and the price difference for a higher priced model." I lost my temper at this point and ripped into him. I'm no longer welcome at that Best Buy. haha Oh well, there's plenty more of them in the Phoenix area. Didn't get the laptop replaced though. :(
Yet, if you'd told them you just didn't want it/didn't like it, they would have taken it back, wouldn't they? Isn't that their return policy? Did you not try to go to a higher up?

I returned an LCD to Staples over 1 dead pixel. It was stuck read right in the middle of the screen. That sucked. They took it back and let me test two more in the store and I found one without a problem.

It is Fry's. They'll take it back and put it right back on the shelf.

You can smash in the screen, they'll take it back, and put it right back on the shelf. :)

It was the higher up that stopped the exchange. His answer to everything was, "You'll pay the 15% restocking fee if you want any exchange."

A lot of places have rules about a min of 4 dead pixels or more for warranty replacment. You should check and see, but if you just bought it you could return it within 30 days and just buy another one.

I meant higher up than the store. ie. district mgr, corporate. Was what he pulled in their return policy?

This is the reason why I WON'T buy an LCD online lsuch as Dell.

The risk of an LCD having a messed-up pixel are too high. Then you'd run into issues with shipping and of the online retailer's dead-pixel policy.

I'd only buy an LCD at Fry's or Costco.
