Would you rather have a Tesla Model S or a Porsche 911?

Model S:
85kwH Model S, optioned out it comes out to something like $77K after all the tax credits

911:
991 "base" carrera. ~$82K after discounts on left over 2012 cars
w/ performance options like PASM, PTV, 7MT etc

For sake of argument lets just assume they cost the same, and you don't care about the benefits of saving money on gas down the road.

Yes there are a lot of other options in this category, but lets limit it to these two. Assume your usage is as a sometimes DD, weekend fun car and track (yes there are track days for EVs - in fact I've seen the Tesla factory guys at Laguna Seca).

Thoughts?

911's get expensive real fast , guess that depends on how much car I'm getting for the money.

The Tesla S is comparatively too slow, even with a full charge, and it doesn't make lovely noises...

Unless you meant the S Performance model? That starts at $84K and is as fast as the 911.

Tesla, with a fusion power plant on board. 😀
I really like the (relative) silence of electric motors.

Porsche hands down. It's just too beautiful of a car to take a tesla over. And that exhaust note... mmmmm 🙂

Definitely the Tesla, I love its uniqueness and gadgets.
The 911 is my dream car, but only in an AWD+Turbo format. Anything less is not a Porsche in my mind.

i'd get the 911 every single day of the week 10x over.

the tesla is a 4500 pound sedan, that well i'm going to have to guess probably drives like it weighs... 4500 pounds. plus it has a center console dominated by an ugly 17" touch screen.

i'd figure anyone considering this choice, woudl have money for like a van / truck / whatever for hauling crap around or a sedan for 4 people . so i can't see any reason to get the tesla unless you really need 4 seats and you only have 1 car (i still wouldn't get the tesla, i'd just look at other cars). or you just like the attention of having a tesla because its the flavor of the week hype machine car.

911.... Squatting dog look and all.

If I wanted a model S, I'd have bought that when I bought a new car a month ago.

Probably the Tesla because I've never been a terribly big fan of German cars. The Model S would be the ideal daily driver. The Porche 911 would be strictly a weekend/summer car.

If I was going to spend that kind of cash, I think I'd rather something classic.

wow really interesting replies, I'd figure half the responses would be what you didn't get the Carrera S?

more background:
My current cars are a 2008 Porsche Boxster and a 1999 Toyota Camry, thinking about replacing the boxster. Had a reservation down on the model S but canceled it as I'm not sure i can get my HOA to install a charger in the garage. Current year end deals are great on the 911 but you know we'll see 🙂

I would take the 911 over the Model S but I would take the Tesla Roadster over the 911 for a fun car.

911 gt3 all day

driven it at the track, I don't think I'd enjoy driving it on the weekend that much on public roads. I also don't have the skill to utilize it properly on the track, I don't want to be "that guy." I've passed a few GT3s on the track in my boxster, must be embarrassing.

Compare it to a BMW M5 or Audi S6. A 911 is not even close to the same thing other than price and having 4 wheels.

admittedly the 911 is a poor value power wise, but cars are about the way they drive and make you feel - M5/S6 doesn't do it for me.

Tesla because I live right next to couple of their superchargers which charge my car for free.

0 cost driving, mmmmmmmmmm.

If you're worried about cost of driving, even if you get the charge free, buying a tesla is completely the wrong thing to do... Wow.
