I say it again - if there are any vehicles on the road smaller than the rest, they're likely to be less safe. Is the solution to buy bigger cars? Not really, because once everyone else is driving outright tanks, suddenly the Hummer is the smallest thing on the road. The best solution to reducing injuries while driving is to be more careful, more responsible, and more patient.

How about this: Next time somebody gets killed or severely injured in an accident where an SUV hit a smaller car sue the driver for deliberate (attempted) vehicular manslaughter. They had the choice to buy and drive a smaller car which would have caused much less damage, but they instead made the decision of their own free will that they would drive a huge vehicle that would cause much more damage to the other car in an accident. Turn having an SUV into a legal liability and suddenly that H2 doesn't look nearly so good.
Yes, I know this idea is over the top, but it would probably work in today's society.
Or do what some other countries do, and tax the hell out of huge vehicles. It's not a legal liability, but it is definitely a financial one.

it doesn't make me want to get an SUV-- then you're just part of the problem. it does worry me, living in LA, where so many d-bags drive SUVs and drive like they own the road, all while talking on their cell phones.

are you joking? the SUV actually still had some shape to it. the civic looked like crumpled foil.

Indicating that the Civic absorbed a lot of the energy of collision, and the SUV didn't absorb as much.

Give me sensor readings from dummies within both vehicles. "Appearance" means nothing.

wow I found this website with car accident pics...

all I have to say is .. even the safest car is not going to help u when one of those huge 18 wheelers hits you.
There are pics of Volvos getting smashed.

Id post the link but it has major blood and death. I dont think it is allowed :(

Yeah, maybe for REAL safety we should all drive 18-wheelers. Maybe if we had a bit of Mutally Assured Destruction built into driving, people would drive better.

...or just vote for more stringent driver licensing...if you can pass it by the AARP.

My car got hit recently on the passenger side rear and ended up sliding sideways down the side of the road to here

If I would have been in my old explorer I would have flipped at least once

Car Structure 101: Head on, the car is much stronger and takes more to do severe damage to you. From the side, the car is considerably weaker, since the only thing between you and the other car is a door. And in that old Civic, it was extremely poorly reinforced. To put the side impact into perspective, even with all of the reinforcements today, the only cars that do not receive a poor ratings in side-impact collisions (they're hit by a mobile sled at 45mph) have side and curtain airbags -- and even with them, many cars do not receive a good rating (good is the best).

Any car getting its side hit by a car doing 60+mph is very likely to be screwed.

On a serious note, I would like to see raised trucks and SUVs completely outlawed from public roadways. They are much more dangerous than any stock SUV/truck.

i second that motion. I was sitting next to a raised F150 today at a traffic light. His bumper was at the same height as my head. HTF can that be legal?!

apparently you missed a later segment where they pit a Land Rover against a little MPV, and the MPV demolishes the Land Rover. their analysis is that occupants in the Land Rover would have been killed, and occupants in the little MPV would have minor or no injuries.

size isn't everything, and body-on-frame construction flat-out SUCKS in a crash.

Isn't it illegal in some states to have a lifted truck?

this is part of the reason that cars are starting to have higher beltlines and taller shapes.

i just have to wonder about the boat-prow front end on the acura MDX, looks like it was almost designed to ride up and over the hood of a car.

That test is at the very very extreme. An accident like that probably only happens maybe one in 15 or 20. In which case death happens to all parties. But it has always been like this. The bigger vehicle usually will fare better in an accident with a smaller vehicle. Hell take that same suv in this video and have it get in accident with a Expedition the same thing would happen. This is nothing new. But smaller cars are out selling suvs like 10 to one now. So as time goes forward less and less bigger vehicles will be on the road.

I'd still rather drive a sedan; better maneuverability and it doesn't look like a box on wheels. If everyone is like "Let's all buy SUVs to protect ourselves," then it moves to "Buy 18-wheelers, so we survive in crashes against SUVs".

It's all about driving defensively and being patient.

nah i will still drive cars, he odds of me getting into a crsh, with a larger car/truck/suv, and at a speed where my life is at risk, are not great enough for me to go make the change
it is like never driving again cuz you can die, never getting on a plane, or a train, never crossing a street, never going out on friday and saturday nights because there are more drunks on the road etc. you can't live your life according to fear

Maximum ride height and bumper location should be regulated. That means moving them down on SUVs, and yes, maybe moving them up on other cars. While we are at it we can mandate that the headlight position not be too high. We have laws that set a minimum standard for passenger safety in the event of an accident. It is a logical extension to have standards for what your car does to the passengers in the car you are colliding with. Common sense.

Don't like your new SUV with more reasonable ground clearance, droopy nose, and low-mounted headlights? Too f***ing bad.
