all I have to say is .. even the safest car is not going to help u when one of those huge 18 wheelers hits you.
There are pics of Volvos getting smashed.

Id post the link but it has major blood and death. I dont think it is allowed :(

Honda S2000, 2.2 litre 4-cylinder: 20/26 mpg, 22 combined.
Chevrolet Corvette, 6.0 litre V8: 18/28 mpg, 21 combined.

Yeah, huge savings from the 4-cylinder.

Some car manufacturers put lower steel bumpers(below the plastic visible bumper) on their SUVs. I think requiring car companies to do it would be a good idea if they haven't already. That helps on front on crashes but not so much on side impacts. Notice on semitrucks the bumpers sit relatively low to the ground to try and avoid hitting above a car bumper, although yes they can still do a ton of damage.

"I think that owners that choose to drive econoboxes, which are inherently less safe in a wreck, need to start paying higher insurance. In a wreck with a Suburban, the Suburban owner would probably have FAR fewer injuries, and therefore less medical bills. Thusly, cheaper insurance." lol that was a very dumb comment i found on youtube, if the Suburban is at fault they pay for the other persons injuries/damage that they caused anyhow..

lol yeah cylinders don't equal gas milage, im pretty sure weight of the vehicle, how the vehicle is geared(ie truck transmission vs sports car) have more to do with it.

That's not really a fair comparison, a maxed out 4 cylinder vs a barely tapped v8, i guess they are both sports cars.

OK
SUV's suck at accident avoidance so you may live in an SUV but you will much more likely be in an accident in the first place. The magic number is 4000lb if you weigh more than that then the curve starts going the other way for poor handling braking etc.

Cars like a civic and jetta are among the safest on the road and according to the IIS have much fewer fatalities than SUV's on a per capita basis.
So pick any decent sedan and you are safer than an SUV simply because the accident where you would get hurt never happens!

How about this: Next time somebody gets killed or severely injured in an accident where an SUV hit a smaller car sue the driver for deliberate (attempted) vehicular manslaughter. They had the choice to buy and drive a smaller car which would have caused much less damage, but they instead made the decision of their own free will that they would drive a huge vehicle that would cause much more damage to the other car in an accident. Turn having an SUV into a legal liability and suddenly that H2 doesn't look nearly so good.
Yes, I know this idea is over the top, but it would probably work in today's society.

Did any of you watch the collision between an SUV (landrover explorer) and a renault espass (sp)? The renault (a stationwagon-ish thing) actually faired better in a head-on collision at 40mph.

Yes, I'd still buy a car. Driving is always going to be risky. No amount of technology can protect people in every possible accident situation.

Last May I was involved in an accident with a small SUV. I was driving a 2005 Pontiac G6 GT and travelling about 50mph. The SUV hit my passenger side and sent me spinning 270 degrees through three lanes of oncoming traffic. Total repair on my car was about $8,000. The body did not buckle into the passenger seat and I walked away without a bruise.

I bought a 2006 G6 GTP a month later. ;)

Yeah, seen it, gruesome stuff. Renault Espace BTW more of a minivan in my book.

Indeed. The side of the car is the weakest point.

And despite what people think, SUVs are not the safest vehicles out there. An increased size in the vehicle does improve the safety, but it's not that useful if it's in irrelevant places (adding an extra thousand pounds in seating isn't about to improve your safety)

How about we all stop buying SUVs? Problem solved!!! :p

On a serious note, I would like to see raised trucks and SUVs completely outlawed from public roadways. They are much more dangerous than any stock SUV/truck.
