Does it make me weird that I didn't dislike the two most mentioned games in this thread, and actually spent a lot of hours playing them?

Yes, it probably does.

Same for me, except I didn't last a week. Between all you said plus the fact that it would kill OSes, this was the only game I felt guilty about ebaying.

edit - Should have quoted the original. The was Ruins of Myth Drannor, or whatever that Pools of Radiance remake was.

thirded.

After they spent some time working out the bugs, the game wasn't...terrible. It certainly was never good. But, the game at launch was a horrid mess.

I'll give honorable mentions to The Elder Scrolls:Battlespire and, hrm, what was the name of the other one, Descent to Undermountain, maybe?

Can I ask if you actually PLAYED DA:O? Or NWN or KoTOR? Or ME1? Compared to any or all of them, DA2 was a significant let down. And not sure how you could have played it and not felt that way. Admittedly, the game itself, for what it was, wasn't Horrible on it's own merit. But most of the "Hate Bandwagon" was because it was a 3 or 4 game that was slammed out the door about a year too early and on the heels of a 9.5 game (DA:O). And almost every "Improvement" over DA:O was just the opposite.

I played through all of them that you listed. In fact, here's my character from Dragon Age Origins at the end of Witch Hunt.

then I can only say your tolerance for crap and capacity for charity are infinitely greater than mine. I pre-ordered DA2 because i loved DA:O so much. Superficially, they were in the same universe. But the things they changed were mind boggling and totally (to my mind) anti-intuitive. And considering how much i paid for it, and how much was needlessly changed from a game that was really loved, I just couldn't find it in my heart to accept it.

Don't get me wrong. I didn't "hate" it because so many others did. But I was totally boored with it by about the time you got to the second time jump that I simply stopped playing. Oh, look here. Yet another warehouse with the same map layout but different monsters. Haven't I done this map like 60 times (no exageration) already. Oh no. Not another 3 wave combat who's only tactical challenge is in timing your spell and potion recharge meters appropriately. Oh no. another decision on what skills to pick, that have absolutely no impact on the game. Ah, yet more stacks of "Junk" equipment which is totally indestinguishable from the "Good" stuff because the icons are all the same and the variances in damage/effect is infinitesmal and almost impossible to detect. Ah, yet another conversation with my "Co horts" that leads to no appreciable difference in their standing with the party or me.

Honestly, I would have had so much more respect for the game if they had held off another year and a half and "Finished" it, with appropriate variances in maps and some flair to the appearances. Oh, and a bit of play testing to ensure that the combats were actually tactically challenging. And that the skills/abilities/items actually made a difference.

Don't get me wrong. If I had my way I would have liked to see Dragon Age 2 more like Dragon Age Origins. It's still a good game if you look at it without any existing preconceptions. There are a ton of crap RPGs available today. I wouldn't lump Dragon Age 2 with them.

Man, after playing Mass Effect 2, I'd just recommend that anyone who hasn't played it skip it and wait for 3. Not a lot happens.

I hated the team building approach. I couldn't care less about who the new cast of aliens were or where they came from. I sure cared less about getting them to be loyal, but I did it to see all of the game. On that note, why wasn't Garrus already loyal? I also hated the equipment management. Very watered down.

All of those characters for the one mission where maybe 3 of those characters were essential for success? I felt like it was a gigantic waste of time. The whole point of the game was to build a team of characters to take down the Collectors (Protheans), and yet the Reapers have numbers and massive amounts of firepower. Did not like it.

Hmm, Hellgate: London is a good call. Could have been so much fun, but it just ended up being a disaster after all was said and done. I had a lot of fun in the beta, but it was all downhill form there.

Honestly, I wouldn't either. But i would lump it in with particularly poor DLC which should have cost less than $20. Not a full game at full price.

Ultima Online (original release): I ran out and bought this the day it was released. I loved Ultima 7 and the graphics were similar, with the thought of playing on line I could not wait.

Ugh. The lag was out of control (and I had a reliable direct Internet connection on my big 56k modem-- which was high end at that time), PKs ruled the land making for no fun, combat was terrible, the thing was an absolute mess on release. CGW still gets a huge thumbs up for having the balls to call UO in its original form what it was: "Coaster of the Month." Back then you could return PC games to Electronics Boutique, which I did promptly.

I understand it was fixed and has changed considerably since then, but there was no excuse for its state at the time. From what I hear it is even a fun game.
+1 on UO. Unfortuantely I didn't have an option to give it back, so that was $ 50 out the window

No it isn't.

Existing preconceptions is the only reason it doesn't have at most a 60 average review score.

Reviewers barely played the game, knew it was released by Bioware/EA, and gave it Bs because they don't have the will to actually review a game objectively.

If you look at DA2 without any preconceptions, it is just a shoddy, less than mediocre WRPG with nothing going for it. Being tired to Bioware/Dragon Age is the only thing it has going for it. It is the only reason anybody played it. If it was a nameless new IP from a never-heard of dev, nobody would even be talking about it. It was pass through time unknown because of how forgettable it is.

There are so few good points in DA2, yet so many bad ones. It is just a bad game plain and simple.

Dragon Age 2 is good. Mass Effect 2, Dawn of War 2, and The Witcher are excellent. Either you people are spoiled by the multitude of games available, or you don't know what a bad game is. Perhaps both.

Hahah, seriously. I'm surprised at the people who think The Witcher is that terrible. C'mon guys, The Witcher is the best goddamn RPG I've ever played. Each man to his own I guess.

As for me, right off the bat I can think of some pretty terrible games from my Steam library:

Streets of Moscow (terrible Russian rip-off of NFS Underground)
Rig 'n' Roll (truck driving, makes me barf)

While I did like the gameplay, the bolded part is absolutely true. Mass Effect 2 is a complete tangent to the Mass Effect storyline. If you skip it completely, you still won't really miss much. Even the developers are saying they want to make Mass Effect 3 accessible to new fans of the series (WHICH, BTW, DOES SCARE ME QUITE A BIT).

At the end of Mass Effect 1, you've defeated the minor threat, but the Reapers are still out there, and they're heading for known space. At the end of Mass Effect 2, you've also defeated the minor threat, but the Reapers are still out there, and they're heading for known space. And Cerberus is still, apparently, your enemy, no matter what you did at the end of ME2.

Like not expecting them to re-use the same 4-5 locations and maps over and over (and over) again? Or completely negating tactical positioning and shattering any sense of immersion by just having enemies spawn out of thin air or jump out of the ground or fall out of the sky (even indoors!)? Or having an engaging story that actually keeps me wanting to play?

None of these even entered my mind as worries when I bought DA2 because this was Bioware after all, they had a good reputation among the RPG crowd. But DA2 was the first game developed by them while under the rule of EA. It's pretty clear what happened (in fact, one of the lead designers from DA:O left Bioware after he saw the direction they were going in with DA2).

The game is not good. Had I known what I know now, I would've never bought it, not even for $5.

Also, those crap RPGs are not marketed as AAA blockbuster games. You can tell they're crap by just taking one glance at them. DA2 took two glances because of the name and Bioware's history, but it's arguably worse than those games because it could have - and should have - been so much better.

Black and White 2
Civ 5
Elemental: War of Magic (although the sequel, Fallen Enchantress, is free because I bought this game, and is being made by Derek Paxton of Civ 4 fame)

Yeah The Witcher would be another one for me; found it terribly boring. It now sits uninstalled in my Steam list. Apparently I dislike a lot of games. :D

For me it's a toss-up between Master of Orion 3 and Far Cry 2.

MOO3 was a kick in the balls all right. I'm actually trying Far Cry 2 again this week, to see if I was too hard on it previously. Turns out that it really does suck.

Spore was not the worst game I have ever played, but one of the most disappointing, considering that it was hyped so much and my grandson spent day after day reading about it and playing the creature creator before the game came out. The game itself was such a letdown after all that, although he did "finish" it.

But you want a couple of really terrible games, here you go: How about Starsky and Hutch or Platoon?? Probably a lot of people never heard of them, but you are lucky if you didnt.

Lord of Magic by Sierra.

Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum-Laude... well actually I didn't buy the game, I borrowed it from my friend who bought it since we both enjoyed LSL7.

Cities XL and Cities in Motion. I just couldn't get into them even though I still love SimCity3k and Transport Tycoon.

did anyone else endure the pain that was age of conan? i have a few cheapo games from steam that are dreadful, like "80 atari games" does not work no matter what.
