I think the picture quality is way better with a good tv. It's like buying a Ford Pinto or a BMW 7 series. They will both get you to the destination but if you are going to spend any time in one, you'd be more comfortable in the BMW. The difference being the cost. You can spend twice as much and get a great TV where two Pintos don't equal one BMW. ;)
When I was looking, the best picture I saw was between a Pioneer Elite Plasma and A Sony LCD. Both were about $8000 but that was over a year ago and technology/prices change.
Personally, I'd stay away from DLP for now and let them iron out the problems. I'd also budget for the extended in-home warranty. You don't want to be boxing up a 50 - 60 inch tv to take in for service. At least I don't but I live an hour from the closest place.

I do not want to spend $8k on a tv. i don't watch it enough. hell even $2500 i have is stretching what i want to spend.

I know a few people with a projection sets. i think the picture is just fine. but yeah seems the samsung DLP has some problems. so might pass on those.

All you happy Samsung owners past your return windows please disregard. Everyone else, do yourself a BIG favor and take note of the following!

I currently own (but it is going back) the 5087W. What a piece of junk! Especially when compared to my Mitsubishi WD52631. There is only one thing better about the Samsung vs the Mitsubishi ? the Samsung has an optical digital audio out while the Mitsubishi has a RCA digital audio out.

PLEASE DO NOT SETTLE FOR A SAMSUNG DLP IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A MITSUBISHI DLP (Tweeter, Amazon, CC and others)!!

First let me say, without ANY uncertainty, that NOT ALL DLPs distort their pictures into an hour glass shape! Samsung owners apparently believe this lie for what ever reason. The Mitsubishi has NO hourglass effect under any circumstances. This is because the screen in the Mitsubishi is flat while the Samsung?s is bowed!

The Mitsubishi has NO electronic overscan that needs to be turned off (repeatedly for the 87s) in the service menu.

The Mitsubishi has a sharper/cleaner picture.

The Mitsubishi has a MUCH better (user friendly) menu system.

The Mitsubishi has an all flat black case ? no reflections and no worries about scratches or smudges. And it is a better quality (heavier gauge plastic).

The Mitsubishi has better viewing angles (especially vertical).

The Mitsubishi has more/better inputs (digital anyway) ? 1 DVI-I (analog or digital), 2 HDMIs, 2 IEEE 1394s, 2 Ant (BOTH can receive analog or digital ? OTA or unscrambled Cable) and CableCard (on the 57 and 65 inch models).

The Mitsubishi has a much better/nicer remote (look, feel, weight, layout, lighted).

In my case the Mitsubishi is 2 inches larger for about the same price (currently).

Found that reply between a Samsung and the Mits in the AVS Mits thread. Interesting read thought you may want to read it as well.

I also have not seen nearly as many people bitch up a storm about any Mits tv, but seen tons of people on the AVS forum and google throwing fits with the Samsung DLP's.

Even if you dont go with the one I picked out, I have tons of time, lmk which one you looking at and I will go ahead and do as much searching on it as I can and let you know if I came up with anything good or bad on it for you. Hate to see you sink $2500 into a tv that will go out right after the warranty is up. Still think your crazy going with one in a box, but I still be happy to help you if you want me to and give you a unbiased opinion, I just want to help you find the right tv within what you want to spend and not get burned.

What they need to make is a damn LED light system to replace these bulbs they are using. If they could do that, these DLP systems would last forever.

If I had the money that is the one I would buy if I were stuck with in a box system, it looks nice, specs seem right on, and hardly many complaints about the set can be found. LMK how it looks when you get it.

The only thing I didnt look up was bulb cost for it, have you and if so what does it run for that set? For my PJ its $299, I dont know if I will be buying another bulb through when it goes, chances are when it does go the HD70 I could prolly get at that time for $100 more then the cost of my bulb, I will just upgrade to HD technology, provided there is more of it to be had in 3 years unlike now.

Fair enough, though they are probably closer to 5k now.

I too got my TV from OneCall.
I got a Toshiba 61inch RPTV from them about 5 years ago. It costed $1600, and they gave me free freight. It's not an HDTV, but it's still a nice set for DVDs and the like.

If I want to watch 720p content, I use my 27inch LCD from Wallyworld.
If I want to watch 1080p content, I use my 24inch monitor ..

Eventually I need to buy a place with a basement .. then it will be projector time!

holy geez 99lbs! When I got my 42" LCD, I took it out of the box and set it up by myself (a measly 57 lbs) because I couldn't wait for my roommate to get home :D I thought it was a little small at first, since the TV it replaced was a 46" 4:3 RPTV, but I have since gotten accustomed to its size after many HD football/basketball/soccer games.

Good luck with your new toy!

DLP PQ> Plasma or LCD PQ... at least to my eyes. All of the technologies have their own set of problems. Check out the thousands of posts in av forums on different sets using different techs and find out for yourslef.

You'll adjust quickly to the size. When I got my 61" it was somewhat overwhelming but after a few months another 10" wouldn't be so bad.

BTW for those still in the market - Ignore funboy's ill-informed anti-Samsung ranting, most of those issues have been addressed in later production runs. My HL-S6187W has been oustanding at nearly 30% less than the 65" Mitsubishi.

Samsung and one other company make LED projection models. Last years models got lukewarm reviews, we'll see what this years is like. They're more expensive than bulb illumination but it seems to me it'd be worth the money considering how long it lasts.

One of the manufacturers is releasing a TV this year with some new bulb technology that's supposed to last a lot longer than conventional bulbs. I think that's coming out sometime in July.

The problem with both those technologies is they'll probably remain unique to a couple manufacturers and we'll never see a good variety of sets from different companies.

Waggy, let us know how the SD picture quality looks on that set. I've been vacillating between flat panel and DLP for my first HDTV and that Mitsubishi is one of the models I've been considering.

So far not impressed with the SD PQ but it does not look any worse then a friends samsung 50" he has (not sure on model number). BUT the HD channels look great.

I recommend going LCoS, JVC's 60" LCoS line is great bang for the buck, you can probably find it for $2000-$2200.

edit: just read the follow ups, the Mitsubishi is also a very nice TV, congrats :)

that will cost you $125+ a year in lost interest versus putting it in a savings account.

you can see every good movie that comes out in a year, with a date, for the interest alone.

These TV's are GODLY!!

Look in the right place, you can get one for 2,000.

Seriously, I really recommend these TV's.

Blacks are the deepest blacks I have ever seen.

Design is awesome

Lots of Connections to put stuff in

Great Color and Picture

SD actually looks a lot better than I thought.

I can't wait until we buy our next 50" - 60" HDTV, probably around 2010 - 2012.

Hopefully LCoS, LED, OLED, SED, whateverED will be commonplace by then will all the kinks ironed out.

When I set up our 50" I thought it was too big. We sit about 8' away. We quickly got used to it.
