little worried about the delivery of such a large tv.
Your TV was banged around a Chinese factory, scooted around a container ship, trucked across several ZIP codes, carted around a warehouse, loaded/unloaded at every step by minimum wage employees.

I don't understand why people think a shipping company is the first time their item has been handled outside the factory. If shipping companies were so horrible that it began to affect a retailer's bottom line, they wouldn't be around for long.

well IF UPS,FEDEX or DHL can't deliver a $20 package without it getting pretty banged up i worry about a $2k TV.

A $20 shoebox gets thrown around. TV-sized containers get hand-trucked, not tossed. If the outside layer gets banged around, that doesn't mean the contents are damaged (if they were packaged right). Factory TV boxes were engineered for that kind of abuse.

It's simple. If I shipped 100 items with a shipping company and 50% were returned because of shipping damage, that shipping company would no longer get my business. In the real world, the percentage of items damaged during shipping is much, much lower. FedEx, UPS, DHL, doesn't matter which carrier or what size package.

There ain't no TV ever made worth $2500. A better TV does nothing to improve what's on it. Keep your old set and buy $2500 of porn.

that would be a good idea. but my TV died a few months ago. so unless i want to try to watch a 20inch all the time i need a new tv.

so i plan on getting a 50+ tv. looked at the DLP and enjoyed the picture.

oh and porn is free! why pay for it?

You can get some pretty good 50" plasmas for that price. I personally can't stand most DLP set due to the SDE and decay lag.

Cheers on your new TV though, remember buy what looks good to you.

I got my TV through OneCall.com. The guy who delivered it to my house even helped me carry it inside the house. My experience with onecall.com has been great :)

What's SDE?

I just bought the 61" Samsung 1080p. Man, wish I'd gotten it for $1500. It was more like $2100.

Would it be more beneficial to get something special for your spouse? After all, she has to put up with you:p

And 20+ years of buying $200+ lamp replacements. Don't forget that particular aspect of being a DLP fanboi.

The only issues I know of with DLPs are the rainbow effect and the slight delays. However, I own a 46" Samsung DLP and I have never seen the rainbow effect (and I've tried to "cause" it) and if there's any delay, I simply use game mode to by-pass some processing. The delay is also an issue if you use a separate audio system from what I've heard. But I just use the TV's speakers, because they work just fine ( and fairly well in my opinion ).

The biggest issues for me, having owned a DLP for two weeks, are viewing angle and the occasional silk screen effect. I don't notice rainbow effect, and very few people will with the newest color wheels. DLPs using LEDs are coming out as well, which should eliminate it entirely.

I played super monkey ball for the wii on my dlp and didn't even think to switch to game mode. I only realized that I didn't while reading this thread. I noticed no real lag, and that game is in 480p which should theoretically be suffering from the upconversion lag.

At $200 a bulb, you'd have to purchase 15 of them or so to have it end up costing as much as a similarly sized plasma from a reputable brand.

a buddy of mine has a 40(around 40 inch) samsung dlp. the viewing angle is pretty large. you can sit pretty far off to the side and still see the screen well.

as for the bulbs you should only have to change it every what 5 years or so?

The viewing angle thing on my tv has more to do with what happens when you are closer to the TV. If I sit far enough away, the angle seems fine even if I stand up or sit on the floor. It's when I am a little closer. In other words, my TV is probably too big for my room if I ever have more than one or two guests. But it's perfect when I sit on the sofa.

The bulbs are rated the same as it is for front projection 2000-3000hours, so if you only use it 20~ hours a week it will last around 2 1/2 to 3 years.

And just for food for thought waggy, I was in your boat when my 65" Thoshiba died. In finding out that all big screens in a box be it DLP or LCD will require a bulb change why be limited to the size of the box?

If you have the room and you have to change a bulb look into going front projection. They are cheaper, bulbs are cheaper and easier to replace, and your not stuck to one screen size for you can go from 80" to over 300 inches.

You can get a SD front projector now, mine the Optoma H31 for $499 AR, or the Optoma HD70 with a free extended warranty, and free extended bulb warranty (you get 2 free bulbs if they should blow out in a 3 year period) as well for $900 shipped, I have a link in the HD section on them.

The picture is much brighter then you will think, mine with the lights on and sun out, and there is nothing like playing a game or watching a movie on one of these. Mine uses a 100" screen and for size comparison you can fit 4 50" tv in my screen, one stacked on the other side by side. I paid $60 for my screen and you can buy more expensive ones if you like, mine give a great picture I think, and if you went with the same screen, and the $900 High Def projector, it will leave you with alot left over for a killer HT surround sound set up or other fun stuff to buy like, Home Theater Seating ;) ;) ;)

Just food for thought, btw thats where Im buying seats for my HT room next tax season, check the site out, super great prices, if you get any make sure to get some ass shakers installed. OH and check out the entire clearance section, some custom, non picked up stuff, I have seen go cheap with ass shakers already in the price and installed.

yeah thought about those. but with those you really need to be able to control the light. the room the TV is going is the main area. so it has lights/windows etc.

but was thinking of putting one in my basement (once i get it fixed up).

That is a total misconception IMO, because when your watching a movie or playing a game, or hell just using it, it gives of plenty of light to fill the whole room with light, its not as if you have to turn the lights off and the room is completly pitch black and all you see is the screen tripping over everything on the floor.

I so used to feel like 99% of the people here when it came to projectors:
Have to change bulbs
Need to control the lighting
the picture is going to look like the suck because your stretching a small picture and making it huge

But when my toshiba died and they refunded me my money I couldnt find anything in the same range other then a 50" rca or go the projector route, I went PJ thinking I will use it till next tax time and buy another big screen in a box that is 65". I was soooooooooo wrong, picture is bright, it is not pixalated at all, I went from a CRT HD tv to this and I can tell you it looks better then the toshiba did, and even the picture streched out as large as it is I look at it to this day and still wonder how it looks so damn clear.

Sure you may have to put a blind up or cover the window if you have an abundant amount of light coming through but thats such a small price to pay to have a Visual Orgasam, I will never, ever go back, to a tv in a box ever again, well worth the price to change a bulb every 3 years for all the joy it brings. OH and you can see the time there on the wall clock in my picture, I use mine at all times of the day, nothing stops me. That was a picture with the light above me on, the lights on the sides on, and some sun going past my sheets on the windows, its in my room that used to be a sun room will nothing but windows on the entire wall. The optoma HD70 puts out alot more light then mine does so that picture will be even brighter, and if you used a better screen like a Grey Wolf II with a Gain of 1.6, it will be even much brighter then that as well.

If going with the box, I like this one. I didnt see listed in the other one, didnt really look either, but it says it has 2 HDMI inputs. Your going to need that and more for the future, also I like the styling of this one vs the first listed one.

Only thing I have to ask is, do you know if samsung has fixed the light tunnel problem they were having?

Id find that out before buying a samsung. If these have no problem, then go for it, on paper they seem to have specs out the ass, and Samsung is supposed to be the best you can buy, aside of the light tunnel problem.

Samsung Light Tunnel Problem, avs, with pictures.

Post of a person with the S6187W having light tunnel problems

Id say stay far away from Samsung products you picked out, they both have the light tunnel problem. I dont think it is worth the chance to get one and having the problem happen, IMO, just hate to see you get burned.

Also make sure before buying what ever one you end up with to google it and see what kind of life to expect from the bulb. I read one thread that he replaced his bulb 2x in 2 years time in his samsung at $400 a pop. If where ever you buy from offers you a bulb warranty TAKE IT!

That place I linked to I know they offer a great bulb warranty for only $99, Im not sure if they see big screen in a box though but I will check.

EDIT
That place only sells Plasmas and Front projection tv's. Check out below what I found for you. Id stay away from the samsungs, hate to say.

HDMI switching receiver solves the port issue.

True, if he has one, for me I wouldnt go changing my entire HT surround sound just to get a HDMI port switch.
But that is me.

Can't you save up a little more so you have enough to get a good TV?
