The biggest issues for me, having owned a DLP for two weeks, are viewing angle and the occasional silk screen effect. I don't notice rainbow effect, and very few people will with the newest color wheels. DLPs using LEDs are coming out as well, which should eliminate it entirely.
I played super monkey ball for the wii on my dlp and didn't even think to switch to game mode. I only realized that I didn't while reading this thread. I noticed no real lag, and that game is in 480p which should theoretically be suffering from the upconversion lag.
At $200 a bulb, you'd have to purchase 15 of them or so to have it end up costing as much as a similarly sized plasma from a reputable brand.
a buddy of mine has a 40(around 40 inch) samsung dlp. the viewing angle is pretty large. you can sit pretty far off to the side and still see the screen well.
as for the bulbs you should only have to change it every what 5 years or so?
The bulbs are rated the same as it is for front projection 2000-3000hours, so if you only use it 20~ hours a week it will last around 2 1/2 to 3 years.
And just for food for thought waggy, I was in your boat when my 65" Thoshiba died. In finding out that all big screens in a box be it DLP or LCD will require a bulb change why be limited to the size of the box?
If you have the room and you have to change a bulb look into going front projection. They are cheaper, bulbs are cheaper and easier to replace, and your not stuck to one screen size for you can go from 80" to over 300 inches.
You can get a SD front projector now, mine the Optoma H31 for $499 AR, or the Optoma HD70 with a free extended warranty, and free extended bulb warranty (you get 2 free bulbs if they should blow out in a 3 year period) as well for $900 shipped, I have a link in the HD section on them.
The picture is much brighter then you will think,
mine with the lights on and sun out, and there is nothing like playing a game or watching a movie on one of these. Mine uses a 100" screen and for size comparison you can fit 4 50" tv in my screen, one stacked on the other side by side. I paid $60 for my screen and you can buy more expensive ones if you like, mine give a great picture
I think, and if you went with the same screen, and the $900 High Def projector, it will leave you with alot left over for a killer HT surround sound set up or other fun stuff to buy like,
Home Theater Seating
Just food for thought, btw thats where Im buying seats for my HT room next tax season, check the site out, super great prices, if you get any make sure to get some ass shakers installed. OH and check out the entire clearance section, some custom, non picked up stuff, I have seen go cheap with ass shakers already in the price and installed.
