Lotus notes is a plie of dogsh!t. I have to use it at work, too.
Our Notes Mail works absolutely fine. I think it's a mail administration/administrator problem on your end. We've had no problems receiving emails - ever. I hate Notes as much as you may, but I would rather have it than the virus-ridden Exchange/Outlook combination. Wouldn't you?

Since you're probably getting fired anyway, what is it they do that's against the law?

we havent had a virus through Outlook/Exchange in over 3 years. It isnt hard to protect against them.

Dude! The last time a manager told me that I couldn't take a break required by law, I told him to stick it were the sun don't shine and quit on the spot.
No job is worth being treated that way. Trust me.

You are correct, nik, if what you are saying is true then your employer is out of compliance with Oregon and Federal employment laws.
You cannot be forced to work while on break, that is a big, big NO-NO. If they require you to read company e-mails, then they have provide a paid time for you to do so. Forcing you to do it on break time can bring the Feds down on them.
In addition, their no-call-no-show termination policy is out of compliance. A "one-strike-you're-out" policy is not acceptable unless the employer can demonstrate that it was not an isolated instance (i.e. it happened more than once on different occasions). IIRC, Oregon law actually states that "job abandonment" cannot occur until the 3rd consecutive day. A single day/isolated instance case is considered to stem from a lack of communication (i.e. employee was not properly informed of required hours, as sounds like the case here) and it is considered the employer's burden to contact the employee to call him/her in if possible.
Sucks to hear, man.To me it sounds like you work in a sh!thole sweatshop anyway. If they fire you, fight it, collect unenjoyment and file some complaints against them. Just remember to have everything documented.
edit: couple of typos :Q
2nd edit: btw, be very careful. They are using a performance issue against you and will most likely attempt to use that as the actual grounds for termination and as a way to prevent you from collect unemployment.

Without any proof, I'm afraid I'd have to let you go too...

Well, I missed two days: Sunday and Monday. And I was not notified any other way other than email - which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
