surely that tells us that it is easy for parents to do this without realizing the true consequences of their actions.
Ah yes... Who would know that shaking your baby out of sheer frustration could harm it? It's perfectly rational to think that if your baby is crying, shaking it violently is the best way to help it.

I blame the baby Turkey.

it is, more or less. it's basically an extremely frustrated parent with poor coping skills and not much intelligence shaking the kid to shut it up. not realizing they may be killing the child in the process. it's not a malicious, cold blooded murder.

edit: also, how does society benefit from having this woman in jail? it's just another cost everyone has to bear through taxes. she represents no danger to others - it's not like she's going to shake someone else's kids to death.

You're absolutely right. We should just shoot her in the head and let her fall into a grave. That would get rid of all those pesky taxes.

Zynga has psychologists on staff determining exactly how to make games like Farmville as addictive as possible. When you deliberately set out to subtly create an addiction, you shouldn't be surprised to expect the detrimental side effects of addiction.

Come on, it doesn't take that much intelligence to realize you don't shake an infant. :/

Even it did, hospitals are doing a good job of educating new parents about this. While recovering they show you a video about "purple crying" and not shaking your baby when you're frustrated.

It's easy to paint her as a monster or a psychopath. but it's more likely that she is just a very sad, remorseful women who is feeling totally fvcked up about the fact she just shook her baby to death... I see it as a very sad situation, and I don't see how sticking her in jail, forever, will make the situation better. also, it's a complete waste of money. it costs a fortune to keep someone in prison for life. let her go. her guilt will be punishment enough.

maybe make a few preconditions for her release. As Ben pointed out, make sure she isn't playing farmville on a laptop near a kindergarten etc.

Hmmm. So you are suggesting we set a precident that you can kill your baby if you are frustrated, and have no consequence other than your guilty conscience?

I can see how this will work. Young mothers and fathers all over ending up with dead babies because they were 'frustrated'. It's like a free really late term abortion, in this woman's case the fourth trimester.

I'd be all for a conditional release pending the removal of her uterus. no more reproduction. No adoption. No foster care. They should allow plea agreements to include these creative solutions. Rapists can opt for their balls be removed etc. Option a: spend all this time in jail OPtion b: life changing elective surgery.

I barely even needed to look to know that this was Florida. All the fucked up shit goes down in that state, what a fucked up piece of shit state to live in. Bunch of white trash, old people and homeless Cubans/Haitians.

it's all very sad, but there is no way killing your own baby, accidentally, is worth life in prison.
6-12 months, with time off for good behavior.

To quote NFS4... "da fuck?"
Picking up and shaking a crying baby to death is not an accident.

Can we sterilize her prior to release?

Well, I don't think she intended to kill the baby. She just wanted to shut the baby up. Police believes the baby's head was hit during the shaking.
She is a POS for sure and shouldn't be let out in under a year. But life in prison is a bit much. She is not a danger to society (unless she babysits.)
