I think it is impossible for one to overstate the importance of bars in Wisconsin. The only thing I can think of that might cause more social unrest than closing bars is cancelling football or hockey. If the Green and Gold is not on the field, the red will be in the streets by mid September. It's like mandating low fat ice cream.
Was used to traveling in the rural south and knew not only were there not going to be any bars, there was a good possibility that you could not even buy any liquor in the particular county.
I moved to Chicago, and made a trip to Minnesota to visit my inlaws, on the way, I was amazed at the little towns in Wisconsin, there would be like 12 buildings and at least 3 of them were bars.

ah... she said the magic words "Wisconsin Tavern League". They are pretty much the most powerful lobbying arm in the state. They are about as shitty as the NRA is. Just brutal
*sigh* all I can do is *sigh*

"Dont think the risc is any bigger than going to a grocery store."

Ehm ... so one trip to the grocery store and one trip to the bar ... is not double the risc then?

Not to mention who is standing/sitting around laughing and joking and generally interacting with everyone around them for hours?
God damn, I just hate people

Seriously. India, under Trump's buddy Modi, has been under de facto martial law since March 24th. It is illegal for Indians to so much as leave their homes. Several other countries have similar lockdowns in place.
My coworker, who has been stuck in India due to the lockdown, has told us that the police will also beat people for violating the lockdown. Vanilla Isis has no idea what living in such places is like and to equate stay at home orders in the US with those full on lockdowns is disingenuous, to say the least.

Its does look like a special kind of stupid.
If I was around that I'd just up my own anti measures game and figure "their own god will sort em out"

How often to you sit around at a grocery store 2 feet from someone talking without a mask?

Next you're going to tell me that randos in a WI bar are actually poor judges of risk when it comes to disease transmission.

Wisconsin is truly turning into the Florida of the Midwest. I'm old enough to remember when so much of the state wasn't just batshit.

Pass the beer nuts please?

We shouldn't need a fucking government order. People should be smart enough to stay at home because its necessary to LIVE.
Since most Americans are fuckin stupid they need an order. And since so many Americans are REALLY fuckin stupid they pressured the supreme court to overrule the order and now they can all go on to dying in mass numbers.
Fuck em.

Can you explain what happened?

Heh, the town my grandmother lived in was unincorporated, a tiny little place, and it had a bar.
In true WI fashion, the other business was a cheese factory.

So, how long before the rifle carrying 'Patriots' go around threatening people to go out and buy stuff?

Because, people are still afraid of getting exposed to this deadly virus. Sure the stores will open, but if people are afraid, they won't head out. And then what?

For conservative zealots and media figures, the pandemic is quickly becoming just another culture war battleground — an axis of postmodern symbolic conflict, another vent for bottomless grievance, and fuel for a screeching victimhood complex. The practical effect will be to fuel infection and hamstring economic recovery. It's a stark obstacle before fixing this or any other crisis.

interesting article

I love this.

It shouldn't be surprising that the reality of masks and other pandemic control measures is the precise opposite of the conservative agitprop line. Most masks and lockdown orders are primarily a way to protect others, not just yourself — which you would think would be exactly in line with purported conservative values of traditional masculinity. But facts have never stood in the way of the conservative persecution complex. Nothing gets their blood flowing like playing martyr before imaginary liberal tyranny. Casting oneself as Anne Frank for having to wear a two-dollar cloth mask at Walmart during the worst pandemic in a century would be a stretch for most people in the world, but not American movement conservatives.

Such contemporary American conservatives really are abject scum.

I love Door County, I just wish I didn't have to travel through Wisconsin to get there 😉
Stay outta my state, ya filthy FIB! 😛

Then they'll point fingers at Democrats.

I think the better way to interpret the "right" response aligning with those values would be:
"Be a man and wear a mask and isolate when possible. But I won't do it because I'm forced to, only because it's the right thing to do. And I'm not bullying anyone about this. I'm exercising my free speech rights as I should."

Different, but still not the position the protesters are taking.

Downstate IL is no different than much of rural WI. Widespot in the road, unincorporated "town". At least one bar. Maybe two, and the fancy one has catfish dinners on Fridays.
I grew up in a town of 1800 people in central IL. 4 bars.

TIL that Wisconsin has a Tavern League. That is the coolest name for a trade group ever. Like, straight up medieval shit. Does every state have a Tavern League? I don’t think so—only the cool Midwestern states with deep Teutonic lineage.

I bet they also have a Fromager’s Guild. What a fucking awesome state.

I work in Minnesota, but live in Wisconsin. Driving home seeing the bars full of patrons again is unsettling, but whatever. Some of the counties have already kept the stay safer at home guidelines enacted, but they are still only guidelines. When I tell my co-workers that I think there will be a big spike in the coming weeks and that those people get whatever they get, I'm met with concerned looks. Like how can I possibly feel good that people acting like idiots and flouting safe behavior dare get sick and have consequences for their actions.

My wife was going to get her hair cut, but her stylist posted pictures on FB of her out drinking, so she cancelled. Wisconsin unfortunately is fucked for the foreseeable future, I don't see any of the old guard changing their stripes anytime soon.
