Buffalo doesn't - The Weather Channel may say Buffalo does, but Buffalonians wouldn't say so. Last year, they had one - Snowvember. The rest of the time, it's simply "this is inconvenient." 7 feet of snow in one snowfall probably does qualify for a special name, too.

Actually Buffalonians didn't even have "Snowvember" it was the suburbs just south/east of the city of Buffalo that got the 6-7ft of snow in one storm. Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of said storm. I had over 6 ft of snow last year at this time and a 15 min drive to the north (Buffalo) just had a dusting to maybe an inch of snow. What is strange... is that it was about 65deg yesterday. What a difference a year makes!

Yeah it fucking blows. Most likely will be stuck in a motel room with basically useless Internet (0.05mbps type shit) from later tonight until some time Sunday afternoon because of this ass fucking storm. All while Fallout 4 and SW: Battlefront sit unplayed at my apartment. FML

Weather Channel buys Weather Underground.
Named winter storms.
Pussification continues...

You haven't been through a real winter storm until you've seen it rain for days with temps below freezing, ice brings down big steel power line towers and you're without power and heat for so long (over a month!) in subfreezing temps that you have to chop up your wooden furniture to keep the woodstove going so you don't freeze to death.

Anyone remember that one (in 1998)?

Naming storms after women? Doesn't scare me. It just makes me wonder when my delicious sandwich is going to be delivered.

I'm right on the edge of that little no snow triangle south of the word Buffalo. No snow for me. :( Deer season starts tomorrow - such a huge advantage to have a few inches of snow - tracking is easier, dragging is easier, plus there's the snow to clean your hands on.

I grew up in Batavia. The best/worst part of living there was the fact that it was right in between Buffalo and Rochester. 30 miles east of Buffalo, 30 miles west of Rochester. 30 miles east of Lake Erie, about 25 miles south of Lake Ontario. Some years we got no lake effect. Some years we joined Buffalo. Some years we joined Rochester. Some years we got fucked both ways.

Pussy! Anyone can chop up furniture for heat. It's when you have to start dismembering and burning your relatives that you know it's serious.

It helps to make the news more "Actiony." Americans and our short attention spans can't be bothered by information unless it appeals to our most base responses.
LOOK! IT'S A #SHINYTHING!!!!!!

k im bord of the shiny thing now

Weather Channel buys Weather Underground.
I was nervous that they'd destroy the best online weather site. That graph thing they have that shows the chance of precipitation and temperature throughout the week is the best thing to happen to weather forecasting since someone firmly shoved a moist finger.......
.....lost my train of thought.
...outside to feel the wind. Let's go with that.

I think so, though I was fortunate enough to have plenty of firewood available to keep the stove burning. I think it was 5 days without power. The treeline looked pathetic and ragged afterward, there were just so many branches down.
There have been a few of those over the years.

....no, I'm thinking of Christmas in 2002. I guess '98 was something else.

I fly into Midway on Thursday then drive two hours into Indiana

Am I going to survive:

Note, i'm from Texas and have NEVER driven anywhere NEAR snow.

Thursday? It'll all be gone by then.

This storm is still fairly unpredictable. The models have it going everywhere across Michigan. We are predicted to get 3-9". Quite a spread.

OH COME ON...!
Dust off the skis, dig the sled out of the garage, grab the kids and have some fun.
We always went sledding on the first snow and had so much fun.
What is this with people afraid of every little thing?
What have we become, a bunch of pussies?

Kids, if your dad won't help you get going on that sled, or your brother/sister doesn't want to have some fun in the new fallen snow, I feel sorry 4 u.
IT'S JUST SNOW!!!!
Have some fun. Enjoy.
If nothing else, put up the Christmas decorations a little early, pop some popcorn, and put on some Christmas music.
IT'S JUST SNOW for gods sake....

PS...
When was the last time u strolled with that loved one during a new fallen snow?
Take ure face out of the cell phone and talk the little lady into a nice stroll.
Just like in the good ole days.
And hey.... doesn't everyone keep harping about the good ole days?
Well, a stroll in the snow was one of those little unexpected goodies nature provided.
Before we ever knew what an ISP even was.
And when you "liked" something it meant you really liked something.

I had a nice ride home from work tonight. It was 73 degrees but dipped down to 59 at one point in the canyons. I turned the heated grips on for a bit.

Tomorrow will be another day of warm sunshine with temps in the low 80s.

All naming the "storms" accomplished is making sure you can't find a loaf of bread, gallon of milk or bottled water when it's supposed to snow.

They've been naming storms since 2012

*they being the Weather Channel

It's a cheap marketing/advertising stunt.
Ah, so it's just the Weather Channel. I've wondered why i never see a name with storms warnings where i look/watch for weather forecasts.

It's a heavier than average but nothing special snow shower here in WI. Kids are outside playing. We don't need to name every weather event, it's stupid. Sunny day Dan, rainy afternoon Suzy, snow storm Bella... dumb.

Parts of Michigan got a bit more than expected. I'm guessing about 9" at my home. That goes with official measurements in my area. We still have an estimated 3 hours of snow left. 10 miles south at my parents they had under 3".

Curious, do the calendar dates for seasonal identification differ from state to state (in the USA), or by country in North America? How can there be a storm in Fall be called Winter?

Because near-idiots associate snowfall only with Winter. It's fall throughout the U.S. It should have been referred to as Fall Storm Bella. That's the Weather Channel for ya!

80 degrees in late November is shit, way too hot, 60 would be nice though. It was 40 degrees last night when I drove mine, but it looks like I won't be taking it to Omaha over the holiday, idgaf about the cold but I don't mess around with ice on two wheels.

Yeah you're right 80' in November is way too hot - I'd rather be dealing with Winter Storm Bella.

It's astronomical, so there isn't a lot of debate about it. In this case they obviously mean the term "winter" to refer to the character of the storm, and not the season in which it is occurring. Here in the northeast we have lots of "wintry" weather in the fall.
