Yes it matters, and the diffrences are in terms of license agreement.

My retail license allows me to install xp on any single computer i choose to use or upgrade or whatever, as long as its only being used by me on one computer at a time. Basicly the license if for me personaly.

An OEM license is for one computer. So if you change the motherboard or other microsoft indicated hardware componants its a new computer thus the software is nolonger legally valid for use on that computer. Or if you build a new computer all together you legally can not instal the software on the new comp, your suposed to buy a new license.

I like being able to tell the truth with no hassle when im reactivating my os with ms after my monthly hardware upgrades

I have tried x64 and have gone back to 32 bit XP. There are issues with several games. There is a list of software that works in x64 and Call of Duty is on the list of working apps. However, I can guarantee that is will fail. Every time I tried to run it (it would run fine for a while sometimes), I got an OS exception error or OS protocol error. I tried with a few 64 bit nVidia drivers and on a couple of different systems. No go.
Also, MOH-PA does not seem to play well. No errors reported, just some ungodly lag and stuttering.
Too bad Creative hasn't worked out all the bugs in their drivers either. I have the eval copy until it expires in August. They say the official release for drivers will be Q3 2006. I hope they are quicker than that or they will lose business.
There will be plenty of bugs to work out in this OS. It seems rather rushed. Let's face it, we had 32 bit processors 7 years before we had a 32 bit OS.

I'm debating doing the free upgrade plan as I have a new AMD 64 powered laptop with a new 32 bit XP Pro copy installed but I won't yet install XP 64 in either of my 64 bit PCs until driver issues are cured as I don't need those kind of hassles. If I do that with MS just to get the free copy (for $12) and do nothing as far as actually installing XP 64 for a while, what will that mean for my existing OS? Do they get the cd back with this? I'd assume that it won't then re-install off the cd using the original ID # (IF need be) but will it still get MS updates, future service packs, etc if I choose to not to install XP 64 on my laptop? I have another older copy of XP Pro that I'm running in 2 other PCs so that's not an issue.
As far as my laptop's concerned, I now that there are not yet 64 bit drivers for all of its devices so there's no way that I'm going to even try that yet BUT I might try it in my desktop once I knew about the drivers.

Good question, I was wondering the same thing. My order is stuck at pending and to be honest I'm in no real hurry anyhoo. When it does eventually get here do I have a certain time limit to install and activate or can I leave it gathering dust until some of the driver issues are sorted?

You have 14 days to activate before it locks itself out. As for when it'll ship, there are rumors of it being the 30th now, but those rumors are for the trial version, it's still anyone's guess when the trade-in version will ship.

Good luck with those. No beta and they intend Q2 release. It's creative unfortunately and I wouldn't trust anything they say.

Yeah it works great!

To install :
- double click on filedisk.reg from filedisk.zip to install registy key
- copy filedisk.sys to your %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers

Then:

to mount/unmount image.
Just start fdtray, and click on the new icon added on the tray icon

Here's the latest on when the trade-in copies will ship:
Currently the software kits are on backorder.

We will begin shipping the Technology Advancement Software in late May 2005.

Sincerely,

Microsoft Technology Advancement Program

"You have 14 days to activate before it locks itself out"

.......I'm out! (not getting the free version then)

"Win64 is here folks, get with the program"

Hah, I've read elsewhere that many are finding that some games are either slower or not even playable after upgrading to XP 64 SO.....I'll wait until I'm sure that ALL the bugs, driver issues, etc are gone first. It'd be OK if you had a spare PC that was experimental only (not really necessary) BUT I'm really liking my new PCs functioning as they are right now, no probs, no issues :)

The smart money is on dual booting. I would suggest people first test Win64 to see if they can actually leave XP. Having a solely Win64 system is a tough proposition atm.

Yeah, that is what I am doing now. I wouldn't recommend any other way!

Until I get x64 drivers for all of my hardware I will not migrate once and for all. I don't install any piece of hardware just for kicks. It all needs to work or no go. :(
