I'm curious about the upgrading my XP 32bit. Does this mean I am breaking the rules if I dual boot XP 32 and XP x64 until I figure out if x64 is ready for prime time? What if I decide that x64 is not for me. Can I go back to my XP 32 bit version and install it using my old product key or is it going to tell me it is no longer valid? I don't really like the fact that it's a one way street if there is no way of going back to the 32 bit version if need be.

Any advice/comments?

Any successfully traded in a student discounted version of XP Pro 32 for 64 (upgrade or full install) ?

I'm considering getting XP Pro on a student discount and trading it in, but I wonder if it'll work...

Pretty much it has to be OEM or Full Install to work?

By trading-in, you are forefeiting your XP32 license. You can not switch back, and it's likely MS will deactivate your old product ID. If you're on the fence, get the trial version first.

I've heard that student versions have been traded-in before, so you should be good.

64bit drivers for Intel boards should come with XP64.

That just made my day. I have 2 versions of 64 bit linux in the mail as well. I know the drivers and software are lagging but I am exited.
$12 eh? I'm assuming you got the trial version, in which case keep in mind the 120 day limit.

Nope the 12.00 US dollars is for trading in your 32bit XP Pro for a fully lic X64 bit XP Pro.

I've done it a few times and always get the same results. The only thing I can think of that might be causing a problem is that my current copy of XP is an "upgrade" version (not the full version), but I don't see any info on the MS site that indicates that would disqualify me from getting the update.

I've emailed MS support, but so far no reply.

I also got this for a day or so when trying to upgrade, this has nothing to do with your COA or PID. It means the web site is having problems... When the COA or PID is denied you will get a message in RED at the bottom of the window stating the PID or COA are not any good. I tried it with a known bad COA (windows 2000 pro) just to see. I then entered a known good COA and got the screen you had that they were unable to verify.... I then came back in an hour and tried again and it went right through: It does work, but you have to keep after it if you want it.

I have like 4 unused Licenses for XP Pro ( freebies for the buisness ) so I'm not loosing anything for trading one in, I can still roll back to 32 bit. and for 12 US bucks you can't beat it unless MS drops it and driver support never comes along. I Plss away more than this a week anyway.

Thanks Mandrake99. I had given up after numerous tries (didn't help that I had to enter all the info from scratch each time), but I tried it again this a.m. and it worked. So I can confirm that the system will accept not only full versions of XP, but upgrade versions as well. So if you already own a MS os, like win2k, you can just buy the upgrade to XP and save a bit of money.

Now to wait 4 weeks.

A good sign is that Creative is no longer forcibly crippling their older hardware through drivers, at least in the 64-bit ones. Even SB Live gets ASIO.

I have an Athlon 64 box with Win XP Pro SP2 (32-bit right now).

I am thinking about upgrading to the Win XP Pro 64-bit edition. I downloaded the one from the MSDN Subscription web site.

I am also running RAID 1 with my integrated NVRAID on my ECS KN1 Extreme motherboard.

What do you guys think? Do you think I will run into any problems?

Is it better do a fresh install or you think upgrade will work fine?

thanks!

So from what you guys are saying, I can buy a dirt cheap academic copy of XP Pro (32bit) on an academic liscence from university, and get it swapped over to 64bit for US$12?! Cool.

Does anyone know if XP Pro 64-bit is available as a academic/student version? If so, I could just buy that and save myself the hassle of trading one in for the other.

There doesn't appear to be any other versions of XP64 at this time, not even a corporate edition.

Do you have to have your 32bit copy registered with MS prior to do the trade?

I just got a Dell freebee with a XP Pro license but I have no idea if it has been registered or not before.

Thanks

You don't seem to need it to be registered, but I don't know of any order that's made it past Pending either...

Thanks Virge, how are you doing?

After re-reading the MS site I realized that they have a March 31, 2003 or newer date for the License trade in. I'll have to ask my brother-in-law when they ordered their computer cause form the Dell website it shows a shipping date of Nov 2002.

If I'm lucky regarding the date, it will probably be better to wait til the process gets ironed out before I try anyway. I was kind of happy/anxious when I realized that the computer had XP Pro, but there is no hurry really. I haven't commited to 64bit yet.

Thinking that way. Will MS deactivate the old product ID by the time they get the order or by the time I activate the new one?

If the later, I know there is a deadline for the trade in. But is there a time limit to activate the 64bit license after you've received it, in case I don't install it right away?

I'm waiting for affordable dual cores ;)

What about this...

A Student Upgrade XP Pro 32 version... will that trade in, or does it have to be Full Install?

It should trade in.

Spec wise there's nothing stopping it, but since Turion machines are so new, there may not be drivers for some of the hardware.

Damn, I just realized that my XP Pro isn't eligible for upgrade to XP64. Mine came as a gift from MS for beta testing WinXP so it predates the March 31, 2003 stipulation. :( I'll have to buy a copy I guess. And it looks like beta testing this OS did nothing for me as far as getting another pro bono gift.

Why did I even bother?
