If dual booting works out okay for people I will partition some space and give this a shot, as well. Right now I have an A64 and a gig of mem, but I expect it to run fine. Saying 512 for XP isn't enough is utter crap. My father's system has 256 with XP and runs just fine. Maybe an X2 and 2 gigs for me by next year. Not sure if I'll jump right on this OS though when it's first released.

So in other words, just install vista while in xp, pick a separate partition, and it should be good to go?

Its been so long since I dual booted I forgot all the little kinks with it.

I've already got a separate partition. XP boots off of boot.ini. If vista doesn't use boot.ini, how does it override it? I assume it must install something in my C: partition - so if I just image the drive, and restore it later, all remnants of the vista boot loader should be gone, and the install in my D: partition is basically non-functional, and safe to delete with a single keystroke?

I had it installed but had to remove it because it didn't recognize my video card drivers. (which made it slow as cold honey)

Other than that, it was pretty slick. Oh, make sure you get your wireless networking set up correctly the first time or it's a PITA to fix. (security code that is) It wouldn't let me get to the properties of the connection or delete the connection to start over. Tried to rename it and start fresh but that didnt work either.

Isn't there some kind of restriction with Vista and LCD monitors, too? Will it work with my Dell 2005FPW?

wish I knew about this before I left for work this morning, 9 hours of DL time could have helped. Oh well, just have to get on it later today and hope it finishes by tomorrow.

Been waiting a while to test this out.

370 kb/s on the x64 version from the MS server...

Too bad it reads that I'm downloading negative bytes...WTF? Right now, I'm at -85%....

Will the 64 bit version actually use the CPU right? I wanna test it out on my Turion...

Remember it's beta for a reason. Especially being a MS product. I'm not brave enuff to install it on my x64 system. Currently downloading the x86 version. Started the download this morning. Currently downloading at 165KB / sec. Only 3.5 hours left. lol. 1145 of 3200.1MB

I already have that in the OP

I'll be looking for an x64 Torrent more, otherwise I'll load up a decent download mgr and start DLing it.

If anyone's got the x64 and wants to start a torrent...:)

they dont work.. 1 is 640kb the other is 13 megs..
Your DL keeps getting cut off. You need a DL manager or use a torrent. That's the x86 ISO, which I have a torrent for in the OP.

Not much chance of getting this file from MS, as every tech site has now front paged this info. Only hope is the eventual torrent link and plenty of time to toy with the beta.

Me...

C: Windows XP
D: Vista
E: Junk

Anyways, XP was installed first, install Vista next.

XP boots off of boot.ini, but Vista's boot manager is VERY DIFERENT.

You don't ever want to mess with it, and its seperate. Mess with it only if you're smart enough because it recognizes partitions by hardware, not by drive letters.

When I had to IMAGE my 7200.8 over to my 7200.9, the hash codes for partitions are different, even though I had the same sized HD imaged onto another, and thus the entire boot got screwed up. Vista's boot manager couldn't even locate XP for me.

I had to REINSTALL Vista, and then fix the boot manager so that I could boot XP..

its not being cut off... thats the total size of the download with a DL manager it still says 13 megs... or 640k..

thats the end of the download..
