It's all incremental, so it keeps the basic SIS copy, then keeps incremental backups for all "points" (day, month, week, etc.) that it requires.

I'm not in front of the WHS now, but I believe you can do that by clicking on the various shares in the WHS console interface. You don't touch the backup .dat files directly - ever. (Except in rare cases, like from the URL posted above.)

Thanks for the info!! I was getting all worried about having 110GB for EACH backup. Speaking of that, it took over 12 hours to fully backup the 110GB... I know it will be a ton quicker every other time since you say it does not do a complete duplicate but that seems way slow for a 100mbt connection.

I did find out about the duplication, it is only on the shared folders and works well for all my pictures. I was not sure if it used the actual backup data or the shared folders.

The only thing I can't get to work now is remote desktop. The server console works great but this is my first experience with windows remote desktop. I type in the ip on my network for the server and it brings up the login screen but when I type in my password it says something about needing my user to be enabled to remote in. I can't find anywhere on the server box to give me permission to remote in, any ideas?

There is a part to allow remote access and when I try to log in through remote desktop I get this error:

"To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the Allow log on through terminal services right. By default, members of the Remote Desktop User group have this right. If you are not a member of the Remote Desktop User Group or another group that has this right or if the remote desktop user group does not have this right you must be granted this right manually".

Any idea how to allow me manualy to remote in?

Go to the My Computer / Properties / Remote tab on the computer you're RDP'ing into and add yourself on that machine.

I am all-ready on the list.

Its looking pretty good, still a lot to do to win me over (see previous post) but one feature I am really falling in love with!

So they have successfully copied SSLBridge and included the java client functionality of just about every VNC server... great.

Mannn, did you even look at it?

Yes. I've read just about all the documentation on it, but I have not tried the beta. I follow Microsoft applications just as closely as I follow opensource applications. There are more exciting things out there for me to spend my time on (notice I said "me" so don't get all bent outa shape, and you play around with whatever you want).

To anyone who wants to get into a flamewar about this, don't waste your time. I'm just letting you know this functionality is already out there, and for free. If you like Microsoft's product better and want to pay for it, then I don't care.

For me, the important features of Windows Home Server are the automated PC backups and the Server data redundancy. These forums and the real world are full of folks losing their pictures, their financial records, and their pirated MP3s and DVDs, when their hard drives fail.

I'll be happy when I don't get any more calls from folks asking me to help them bring their data or trojan-infected PC back.

Cannnn't resssiiisssstttt......

Don't want a flame war... there is no point as you change your tune faster than a bad busker. You were not letting people know the functionality is out there.... you were making your usual uninformed bonfire-p155ing cr@p. The usual flippant, uninformed whining about MS copying everyone .... waaah waaahh waaaaahhhh snore.

There is no OUT OF THE BOX solution INTEGRATED so well with an ADMINISTRATION INTERFACE SO SIMPLE out there. You sir are an idiot of the largest proportions if you compare VNC and SSL to WHS.

If whining, b1atching anal-retentive cr@p-spewers like you ruled the world, I shudder to think what a disjointed, drab and boring world it would be.

what is the price point going to be? if it is relatively high, like around 500 bux, why not get small business server...? much more to it...?

Pretty cheap (by MS standards) they have said. Certainly nothing like SBS or similar.... my guesstimate from what they have said on the team blog would be $100 (and alas thus £100 if you are in rip-off britain) give or take 20%

How does it handle weird hard drive configurations? For example if you had a 320 GB HDD and you put in an 80 GB hard drive but you want 100 GB of files to be backed up. Obviously it won't be able to mirror that 100 GB of files on to both drives since one is only 80 GB. Does it just set the limit of backed up files to 80 GB?

Nothing stopping you using RAID as such, just in most (home user) situations not necessary and I think I saw a post saying it may in fact be slower. I am not using RAID myself so cannot comment. Duplication does everything I need.

IIRC, this is one of the limitations of the system they use - you are limited by your smallest drive. Then again, RAID wouldn't even help in that situation, so I don't count it as much of a loss.

I played with the beta briefly, but it's still too raw for me to trust. That's not to say I didn't like it - indeed, I thought it was pretty slick - but that I'm waiting for the final version before I give judgment.

New version released last night for those who are interested. Downloading at the moment and now is the time to test the upgrade again (shudder!!).

If there is anything worth reporting I will let ya's know ;)

WHS CTP(Post Beta 2 Version) has an integrated web host for remote access

(____).livenode.com

Very easy to configure but still requires you add to your browser security setting as a trusted site. But it is getting closer. Improved WHS Console also. Re-installation took much longer than the initial Beta 2 installation, but it appears no data was lost in the migration.

What build is this?

I'm running 3790 and am able to remotely login.

OK, where can I find my build number? My desktop says build 3790, my WHS console says 6.0.1301.0, and My Computer says v.4035.

How would/does this beast integrate into a Windows domain? I'm running a small domain at home and would prefer not to break it, but I just got into the beta and this thing has some interesting features.
