Its looking pretty good, still a lot to do to win me over (see previous post) but one feature I am really falling in love with!

Looks good. I am late into applying for the beta. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Updated the post because I didnt realise remote desktops over the web are actually in! I didnt notice because I was using firefox and it only works with IE atm (big surprise!). Anyway works a treat too :)

Haven't bothered with remote access yet (worried about a few holes in my firewall) but I am having no luck getting the system backup process to work. Having a look at the WHS forums isn't resolving anything either. I've only had it running for four days now, so I just haven't had time to play with the good stuff yet.

Whats the backup issue? It worked out the box for me. There isn't a great deal to actually configure so must be something simple :)

Just to let you guys know, I have moved the whole install to a VM now and it works super-great there too. I did this just to free up some hardware for making a dedicated slim Media Centre box, which on 1GB of RAM runs Vista (and thus media centre delivering HD movies, DIVX, etc) and Windows Home Server!

Biggest test so far was 3 backups running on WHS, copying a 4gb iso to another box, whilst my GF watched a 1080i movie from the hard disk and it handled it all beautifully. So don't worry if you have no spare hardware about, it can be run on very low requirements (1ghz & 512mb is recommended... the minimum is lower!)

This is exactly what I was planning to do! :D

So they have successfully copied SSLBridge and included the java client functionality of just about every VNC server... great.

What time do you have the backup set to start? At first I had mine set to start at midnight, but then I read that you shouldn't have it set to start or end at 12:00AM. I moved the backup time to start at 1:00AM, and now it works wonderfully.

I dunno why I bother responding to such crap, but I believe if you could see the slickness with which it's all implemented OUT OF THE BOX with a simple interface for administering that even your dog could figure out, even the most skeptical of linux-zealouts (yes I mean you) would be impressed. Download the beta and try the whole solution before starting the whining :p

I have the backups running fine....I would however be keen to sort out the remote access, but thought you needed a domain or some windows registered account for it to work. Non static ISP IP address you see!

Not at all.... My IP isn't static either... though I am fortunate that it probably only changes once every six months or so.. thus i have gotten used to remembering it (only the last digits change anyway). But lots of people are already using services such as you can use something like dyndns.org which tracks your IP changes and provides you a static address to link to it (my linksys router even provides support for such services in the firmware... as do many others).

I'd heard about this awhile ago and it peaked my interest. Now can this puppy take some tuner cards and allow access to Media Center Extenders? I'm assuming it works like Media Center.

thanks for all the info. I got my invite about a month ago but did not have a box to install it on so I have not tried it yet. I think I am going to spend the $40 required to get a Socket A setup running (1.4ghz, 768mb, 160GB) so if the requirements are correct that should run it just fine. I look forward to trying it out!

No, it doesn't. It's a real shame.

Sign up at dyndns for a free static domain address to use Here.

pop the details in the router (usually under setup > DDNS on linksys routers) and the router will then report any change of your dynamic IP to dyndns. You can then use just your dyndns address to get to your home IP no matter how many times the actual IP address changes
