No activation is one thing. Whether it'll pass a Genuine Advantage check might be something else again. I can only claim 100% ignorance on this one... anyone want to risk the wrath of Basket Cat and clarify this? I recall someone just recently posting that the lappie they bought off an Ebay seller is failing the Genuine Advantage check and plagueing him/her with the notification. Presumably it has VLK on it, although I don't know if he/she came out and said that.

If you look at all my above discussion and complaints it was only about activation (aside from a brief mention and link of the yahoo story). :)

Your earlier reply and mention about "technically savy" users was also about activation.

Now, if you want to change topics to be back on topic and talk about the WGA and the notification, we can do that :)

I'm not sure how the WGA works on VLK copies. I belive its required on VLK copies to manually download files, just like on the retail. But since all the VLK copies at say a college department, or a small business will all have the same cd key, I dont know how they determine if its valid or not. At a guess, they may have some predefined limit for some VLKs that will validate up to 50 or 100 copies on an average VLK, or perhaps its sophisticated enough to know how many liscenses MS sold to a particular VLK (I doubt MS goes to that much trouble on it, but its a possability).

Well, WGA Notification is what this thread is about. It's a little late in the game to be voicing annoyance at product activation, a ~five-year-old feature of WinXP, but look at what it's there for: to prevent casual piracy (intentional or ignorant). Has it helped do that? I'm sure it has. I'd rather have some other solution like a USB dongle that is uniquely coded to my Windows license (wouldn't have to be plugged in all the time, just for revalidation), and maybe we'll see that eventually, but with WinXP halfway through its lifespan, there's not much point in ranting about a decision made 5 years ago.

Yeah MS had some debates on if they were to do it or not

A. Virus/spyware would spread more

B. Loosing money

Those VLK keys on non-legit copies of Corp versions will usually get tagged very quickly as pirated. If you can get these keys, I'm sure MS knows what they are...

Let's say you have a legit Windows 2000 licence and a non-legit (copy of a legit disk) Windows XP Pro SP2 full install disk, can you buy a Windows XP Pro upgrade (non-full install) and use the key that came with the upgrade to install from the non-legit Windows XP Pro SP2 install disk or do you need to install Windows 2000 and then upgrade using the upgrade disk?

In other words: Can I use the key from an XP Pro upgrade kit when installing XP Pro using a full install XP Pro disk?

As far as the topic goes, it only seems like people who are running bootleg copies of Windows will be affected by this. Serves them right. DON'T STEAL SOFTWARE.

sudo apt-get vlc

Use VLC player ("vlc" may not be in a repo you use...I'm just assuming it is...It is in Fedora)

You should also need the libdvdcss or libdvdcss2 package for providing a way to break encryption on most movie dvds.

If you visit Ubuntu's website's FAQ pages or google on the subject you should be able to find details on how to get this working pretty easily. There are certain legal issues that had to be worked around, but once you get it working (which is fairly easy) you shouldn't have to worry about it again.
