just saying!!! i am over 50 not really wanting to learn a bunch of new crap and the pointer just quite so the POS is going back to BB tomorrow and getting 7 (hopefully)! it may be a great thing but i just want the SOB to work. i do not care if it is the the latest and greatest anymore, just work. app this, store that who gives a flying rats ***.

I have to admit I'm perplexed at the effort some people will go through to troll such a droll topic. You get a gold star for not using that time for something more important, which pretty much includes everything else you could have possibly done instead.

Too bad I can't get the 30 seconds back it took to call you out on it, but at least I signed my name to it and not some BS first post troll account.

Hope everyone has a great week! :p

Why Windows 8 sucks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTYet-qf1jo

The problem is the worst on laptops with touchpad. Desktops with normal mice work much better because MS missuses the touchpad. Adn considering that "side-scroll" does not really neatly on most touchpads it seem obvious that the gesture thingy is even worse.

I just watched that video and the guy is obviously an idiot,I'm almost 50 and if I can use it anybody can.

Problems I agree with is give desktop users more options ie boot straight to desktop, more choices for desktop users is always a bonus, anyway end of the day Win8 is very easy to use IMHO,that guy in YouTube should stick to consoles (about his level I think).

do able. i don't know the answer but i noticed while setting up w8 it was switching from the new start to desktop in about 15 sec. not sure i'll bother because once setup to my liking it works fine as is but w8 might be checking the metro apps for new content so uninstalling enough apps or all of them might make the wait even shorter.

This is so classic. According to you the guy is an idiot, yet you respond with a simplistic emo-line that totally fails to address even the most basic of points he made.

He outlines in detail exactly what's wrong with the interface and the ways it breaks with established standards. To many of us, true usability is far more than just "I can click around and open my Twitter app" or whatever. Like I've said before, sure, I can 'use' an OS that's loaded to the gills with spyware and viruses- but I consider such an OS UNUSABLE, not because I can't figure out how to work around all the crapware- but because I shouldn't have to. Because OS's have already advanced past that point, and I know this and won't accept needless backward steps. If you can't grasp that concept, then you have no business declaring anyone else an idiot.

Once more, true tech-innovations come more from people that delve into things beyond just the marketing hype, and into the real guts of what works and what doesn't. So at least before you dismiss something like that video, try actually refuting any of the points, intelligently, with *actual* counterpoints, not just the usual snarkiness that doesn't address anything.

Also a general aside, does Windows 8 completely lack spelling/grammar/punctuation check? Those things you should be able to figure out too.

Set up a new laptop for my wifes cousin last night, win8 isn't that hard to use but I really wasn't seeing the benefit of it over win7 on a machine without touchscreen.

Last time I checked nothing in forums rules calling the guy on YouTube an idiot,oh sure if you or I insult members here that's wrong as we all know,I won't get into a stupid argument with you which I know you are trying to do.

I let the MODs watch what you say and post.

FYI Win8 is not my favourite OS or perfect but I'm still entitled to my opinion which you obviously disagree with(nothing new there),but hey this is AT forums where we all can give an opinion.

I'm not too bothered about booting straight to desktop to be honest (one second click at most from Metro to Desktop)since it can be done with third party mods etc... however would be nice to give desktop users options like that, seems like Microsoft overlooked some simple yet easy options that could be for the better.

:)

BTW here is a constructive thread over at OCuk http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18477387 (What would you like to see in Windows 8 SP1 or Windows 9?) .

I think the biggest issue with that video comes right out at the beginning. He declares the OS as completely unusable. This implies that anyone running Windows 8 is unable to "get their work done." That's just not the case.

If I hadn't already known what some of the W8 issues were going to be and how to get around them W8 would have been unusable in the short term with a touch pad.

Sure you can look up how to get around all the little irritating issues that come up with W8 but you shouldn't need to do that.

W8 isn't nearly as bad with a mouse but Edge Swipe makes W8 very annoying to use with a touch pad. Doing a RegEdit to disable edge swipe fixes the Goblin Farting issue...

The guy isn't saying that W8 is unusable forever with no workarounds. He is saying that out of the box W8 is unusable in the short term unless you have another W7 computer with an internet connection handy to look up how to do stuff. Also he is perhaps exaggerating a smidgen. Chalk it up to "Artistic License".

Gotta love these workarounds. Not. And I say that as somebody who used Windows from 3.1. You know why? Because until not it was not big deal if you don't do any tweaks at all. OS would work reasonably with default settings. And that helps millions that don't know how to tweak it. What was Microsoft's job if not figuring out which tweaks should have been enabled by default in the first place?

I'm sure they spent tons of hours debating the UI changes, their defaults and people's reactions when coming from older versions of Windows. However, that's not their only consideration and I'm sure that promoting their new ecosystem holds more weight than quelling a vocal minority that will still use the product anyway. The true test will be whether or not they release an updates over the next year that change the defaults or add settings like the ability to boot to the desktop with a simple checkbox. I can't see them going so far as to add the Start Menu back, but I guess we'll see what happens.

True, the statement that it's completely unusable is hyperbole. But, he makes his case (certainly for the UI hampering usability) citing examples and comparisons with established UI conventions. So just dismissing his case without offering up any concrete examples as to why it's wrong is dishonest.

I notice those that dislike the Metro interface tacked onto Windows 8 can actually state the case why it's bad design, and cite examples to prove it. I'd like to see a fan of Windows 8 make a video like that making the case why stapling two interfaces together (one of them horrible) is in *any* way better than Windows 7 or other OS's, and actually use facts, cite established UI conventions etc. to make the case. I hear a lot of smug nonsense like "Oh just learn to use it" but never a peep when asked for a valid case WHY one should use an inferior UI design vs a better one.

And by the way, I think it's fair to point out when someone keeps on and on about how they're so able to do something and others are 'idiots' because supposedly they can't, that one should be able to form complete/legible/adult sentences with a computer. (Something that computers have been easily able to help people do for a good 25 years now). It wouldn't be a big deal otherwise, but in this case: lead by example.

This will be the last time I ask that cooler heads prevail. The subject itself is fine, but the conduct here is lacking; there is no one right opinion on Windows 8, but browbeating other people over their opinions is not the right way. You guys are supposed to be better than that (if only marginally).:p

That's YOUR opinion!!

He is a MOD so is allowed to say things like that and calm things down in this thread(I actually agree with him), as to the previous posts/remarks I have already stated why I think Win8 is very usable and easy to use in plenty of threads here so will not go over old ground again, certain members are trying to throw cheap shots by criticizing spelling/grammar etc.....well just remember English is not native to all members here, they still have the right to post regardless without personal attacks on members,I'm sure Virge agrees with me on this.
