The key I just extracted for Pro does not match the key you've listed.
 
I went to Windows Update and it was listed there after I refreshed. If you gave your email address, you would presumably get an update that way as well.
 
I just received a message on my tablet via windows update that windows 10 was ready to be installed yet nothing is offered to do so with. After looking at the string of updates ms sent to it I've decided to try to media creation tool to update in place again and am in the process of trying again. If my touchpad will work them 10 will stay. Anybody want to buy me an asus essence stx ii sound card so I can have hifi audio on a windows 10 desktop?
 
Flawless install complete. Went from fully functional 8.1, in place upgrade to 10, wrote my key down, downloaded Microsoft tool and created USB, and installed to a brand new blank SSD using my key, which I entered the first time the installation asked me to. All took about an hour. Thanks OP.

Wish me luck that this doesn't jack something up, not that I use this system for anything other than games and movies.
 
So here's something that happened. My system has 4 drives, 3 SSD and an HDD. For some reason, only 2 showed up in Explorer. They showed up in Device Manager and Disk Management, but I couldn't access them. Turns out they didn't have drive letters assigned for some reason. Manually assigned them in Disk Management, now all is well.

Well I wasn't sure what consists of core component--I would've thought the boot drive is a core component, but I suppose you're saying CPU/Mobo?

That's it. I upgraded to 10 on one SSD, copied down my key, and installed it fresh on a brand new SSD, and it activated just fine.
 
So I attempted an in-place upgrade. The tool downloads and starts, installation begins, and... Blue screen. I reboot, and a few minutes later, another blue screen. So I have to roll back to a restore point.

Why is this difficult? The front page of this forum is filled with horror stories. 🙁
 
I upgraded my 4year old Dell Costco from 7Pro to 10 Pro and the install went smooth. However, I soon discovered that boot up time was much longer than 7. I saw the Windows logo then it sat for almost 2 minutes with a black screen until the login came up. Then twice I tried to restart the laptop, once the screen went blank but the computer stayed on. Other time it just sat there saying restarting, so I forced shut down. I used the feature to roll back to 7, but then it tried to start up, and I got a blue screen. Even the startup repair failed. I had an image of W7 but decided to do a clean install with the Dell media. Strangely KB3035583 is not in the updates. BTW, for anyone reinstalling W7, there are about 200 updates at 830mb from SP1 install.
 
Well my game rig tried to update with the previous installation in-tact. The update files downloaded and upon reboot the system pretty much was toast. Had to wipe out the entire drive. Did a short Windows7 install. Did NO updates. Used the update tool. Worked like a charm.
 
In place upgrade on my HP Envy laptop seemed to go smooth. Everything came up fine and worked as expected until I let it go to sleep. Just can't make it wake up again. Had to hold the power button and force it off then the reboot took forever. I'll have to try and fix it over the weekend.
 
Of my three pc's only the laptop upgraded smoothly without issues. When I upgraded my tablet I didn't have use of the touchpad so I rolled it back and my desktop lost all installed software so I rolled it back again just a few minutes ago after getting the product key which is exactly the same as my laptop. Is MS issuing people with multiple pc's the same key? It certainly looks that way but they're all tied to the same account so it really doesn't matter since they're all legit.
 
Won't install on an Intel Core2duo 8400 running at 3Ghz because the "CPU doesn't have NX" to paraphrase. Booted to BIOS and sure enough the NX option is enabled. Already have the latest BIOS, which is 2009, so not sure what to do. Darn this was the Windows 7 test machine I wanted to try first. I already know my main two computers aren't getting 10 because I use Windows Media Center everyday.

I have one Q8400 running Win 10 Pro with No problems.

Another one goes into perpetual Win 10 installation fail.

I can not figure out "yet" why it is failing because the two computers are Basically identical hardware wise.

One is In-place upgrade fro Win 7 Ulti
(success) and the Failing has Win 8.1 Pro installed.

I think that Microsoft took a "Childish"
approach to Windows 10 Free Upgrade Available in 190 Countries Today

At the moment I am giving it a week or two to calm down.

If it is persist to mid August I'll have to take it seriously.

"Both" is a single iso at 5.55GB. It auto selects based based upon your current OS. When you do a clean install, you choose 32 or 64 bit.

Just completed the upgrade. Was surprised to find a desktop remarkably like the one I left behind in Win7. All my pinned task bar items intact and working, media server running, all bookmarks and Pale Moon add-ons working. So far, just a few unknown devices in DM to sort out, but other than that, all seems well. Quite an improvement over Win8 IMHO; much more intuitive and Win7-like. Looks like a keeper.

Oh, and no problem setting PM as default browser.

I've noticed a lot of these "horror" stories have a fair bit of self-inflicted pain in them. Not saying all are that way, and it does seem it isn't a very clean launch.
 
Here is a question. Say I have a system with Windows 8.1 and have the included install/rescue DVD that came with the system. And I also have a spare WD drive (same hdd as in the system).

Can I remove my system drive, install Windows 8.1 from the DVD onto the spare drive I'll swap in, run all updates and get the Windows 10 upgrade notice, then upgrade and try it out.

If I like it, okay it stays. If I don't, I just swap the drives and go back to 8.1.

Doable? Or no? I really don't want to risk fubaring the system. It would be terrific to do it as I describe to test this all out.
