Recently I've been travelling quite a bit for business, so it's unavoidable. I only go to a fancier, upscale restaurants alone. It's a little strange being in more bourgeois/family-oriented places. There's nothing awkward about being dressed up, with a paper in one hand and chablis in the other, enjoying a light dinner.
As was mentioned before, it's also a good way meet people, without making it a conscious objective. I've been approached more than once by companionless female diners.
