Recently I've been travelling quite a bit for business, so it's unavoidable. I only go to a fancier, upscale restaurants alone. It's a little strange being in more bourgeois/family-oriented places. There's nothing awkward about being dressed up, with a paper in one hand and chablis in the other, enjoying a light dinner.

As was mentioned before, it's also a good way meet people, without making it a conscious objective. I've been approached more than once by companionless female diners.

Most likely. My friends are the same way though except they don't want to do ANYTHING by themselves. I, on the other hand, see no problem with grabbing a bite to eat by myself. I mean what's the big deal? Do you need to have conversation at an eating environment? Do you really have to have another human with you to feel socially excepted around complete strangers? In such a case I would usually just order out, but if I felt the urge for eating at an actual diner and having a platter of something, the meer fact that people are busy or something and I have to go alone would not even make me think twice about going. I'm hungry, and it's food I want to eat, so what's the big deal?

Bring something to read so you don't look very pathetic and alone.

reading abook in a restaurant MAKES you look pathetic and alone.

as in...gee, I eat alone so much, I actually thought ahead and brought a book.

I don't go eat alone in a resturaunt to look good or not good... I go to eat a good meal and enjoy a good book. You guys have self-esteem issues if you worry about what you look like when you eat alone...

sheesh

No. I see going out to eat at a nice restaurant primarily as a social activity. IMHO, if there's nobody to go with, then there's no reason to go.

I can't eat out alone. I'll pick up food to go, no problem. But not eat alone. I like the people who eat alone and have some excuse for it. Like "Oh, don't mind me. I am not a loser, I just really need to read the Times"

I eat out at fast food places alone, but never at a sit down restaurant

When I am out of town on business and don't have a dinner meeting, I have no problems going out alone to eat. Sure beats sitting in a hotel room all night.

Depends on the place - it takes a certain type of restaurant for me NOT to go alone - most places I don't really mind but I wouldn't be able to deal with sitting in a loud restaurant by myself.

I'd rather cook for myself if I'm alone. However there are times when you cannot cook for yourself (business trips).
In those cases I have no problem eating alone. I'd rather go to a nice restaurant alone and have a good meal, then
feel embarrassed and eat nothing or have fast food.

the actual act of eating isn't too bad, but the wait to get the food can be boring without someone's company. but nothing a magazine or newspaper can't remedy.

I can't eat at a restaurant when I'm alone either. I can do it at fast food places, no problem. And I actually enjoy going to the movies alone. But I can't do the real restaurant thing.

haha its kinda wierd for me...

If im just driving somewhere and i stop for fast food, Ill eat in the car, but only so I can listen to music i enjoy while eating (if im not with someone, why sit there?)..its not because I am un-comfortable

However downtown at lunch Ill go into restaurants alone with a paper and sit down to eat..no problem!

I just feel so silly having some one wait on me, and just me at the table. I don't know why, it's just very uncomfortable.

Yes, everybody in the restaurant is snickering between themselves about how pathetic you are eating alone.

Maybe you were suppose to be with somebody, but they couldn't make it. Or you're out of town on business, so don't know anybody. Or you were hungry, and wanted to eat some good food. Do you really think people care whether you're eating alone or not? And even if they did, why do you care? How often do you interact with these people that you should care what they think of you?

I only do this if I'm on a business trip.

I've never done it while I'm home and don't think I ever will either.

it depends on the restaurant, if it's like an AppleBees, TGI Fridays or something, i'll go alone no problem and eat at the bar.
if it's a fancier place, i wouldn't go alone.

I once ate the entire contents of a city bus...tore it open and shook it into my mouth like a box of crackerjack.

Sure, I've done that. No, it's not my favorite thing to do.

How about you sit down, drink a beer, losen up, then sit down at the bar. When some chick sits down, start a conversation. Last time I did that, I got her phone number.

like those below your OP, they don't get out and meet many people, yet pretend they are better than that.

I used to eat out alone a lot, make some conversation...get invited to another's table, invite someone to your's, etc.

not a bad deal. Better than spending it at home.
