Final Fantasy is dead to me. They can do nothing to make me want it, not even if they hired Itagaki and made a badass Ninja Gaiden clone with meaningful story etc etc

Wait...isn't that what FFXV looked like?

You owe it to yourself to play through FF2, FF3, Chrono Trigger, in no particular order. All are great, and the stories in FF games aren't really chronological in any meaningful way.

Yup. Final Fantasy IV (II in the US on SNES, "the red one") is pretty much THE defacto standard that all other JRPGs are judged by for me and has been ever since I initially played it.

Pinnacle of straight up story telling without any BS overdone battle systems, side quests, mini games, or excessive grinding, or any of the other ADHD dudebro shit that plagues RPGs today, nor any of the whiny overly Japanese school girl emo teenager anime shit you see on the other end of the scale.

A classic tale of redemption, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, love, revenge, humanity, and just good old fashioned good vs. evil and saving the world with plot twists galore. To me Final Fantasy IV/II represents what Final Fantasy is and will always be.

Moon, answer our wish!

I'd say it's my favorite game of all time, tied with Xenogears, but then Xenogears just takes it to a whole new level in jaw dropping revelation and kinda stands on it's own.

Final Fantasy VI (III in US on SNES, the purple one) is obviously up their too, and is incredible on it's own, but I still enjoy IV/II more just for it's simplicity and classic story.

I might add that the DS 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV/II is excellent and true to the original in every way.

Exploration, gone? What? Once you get out of Midgar, it has the same open-world style like previous FF games with plenty of exploration to do.

It's one thing to not like the game. That's perfectly fine. It's another thing to not like it and have no clue what you're talking about.

There was at least a few hours of gameplay on the third disk, not to mention the number of side quests that open up on it.

Yeah if you grind away for chocobos and maxed out materia then MOST of the game time is on the third disc. I was at level 92 before I could beat Emerald and Ruby.

I was burned hard on FF13. I hated combat time length being used to calculate EXP. I've always enjoyed tactical games that give you a bit of time to plan out moves instead of frantically trying to end a match as fast as possible. I wish they would make an "old school" RPG that requires more thought instead of quick action.

This is why I kind of dislike the move away from turn based RPG's. I know people say it's played out, but done right it's great for using a strategy based battle vs a twitch based battle. All the real time battle RPG's to me are just action and may as well make them a fighting game which is fine for what they are, but not exactly what comes to mind when someone says RPG.

This is why I love the persona series.

so i assume you don't like skyrim and kingdom hearts to??

My personal ratings out of 10

FF1: 6
FF2: 7
FF3: 8
FF4: 8.5
FF5: ?
FF6: 9
FF7: 7.5
FF8: 8.5
FF9: 8
FF10: 10
FFX-2: 6
FF12: 6
FF13: ?

Ranking X higher than VI? That's just silly. Whiny, emo Tidus deserves at least a one point deduction! 😱

EDIT:

I watched the gameplay video, and it looks interesting, but it's still weird to see a main franchise Final Fantasy game have a Devil May Cry or God of War style battle system. I guess I just prefer games that have certain styles associated with them to stick with those styles. Heck, I'm one of those people that doesn't care that iOS is still just a grid with icons. If it works, don't change it! I like my turn-based battle system.

I'll still play it, because I've always been interested in Versus XIII, but just that naming....

yeah i love that series too, but somewhat i think atlus, never been serious about it, i mean there are no persona series for PS3,and for a strange reason they release it on ps2 instead.

Cause PS2 was a much larger market than PS3 at the time, it only caught up in the past couple years. Plus, they spend a lot of time on each title so it was probably in development before PS3 release.

why cant he be serious? 10 was IMO fantastic. and is prob 3rd to 4th on my list if i did them that way

So...then...you agree with everyone else. 😕

If it's "third or fourth" on the list, then it can't possibly be a "10/10" if the others are lower.

Hell, unless you feel four or five of the FF games are perfect, then your statement makes no sense.

I know this is all opinion and subjective, but I think the vast, vast majority of Final Fantasy fans and longtime RPG gamers would only give a "near perfect" score to the SNES classics; FFIV and VI. THEY are the pinnacle of the genre, and have not yet been equalled.

I liked Daggerfall and Morrowind, didn't really care for Oblivion, and haven't even picked up Skyrim yet because for as pretty as they are, the combat in them is horrendous. I've NEVER liked the combat and it's the main reason I quit playing each one. I like the games for what they are, but the really bad implementation of the D&D combat just kills it for me.

Haven't really played Kingdom Hearts because I don't really care for Disney 😛

Playing FFIII on DS right now.

The NES games were lacking in story badly, not enough cart space for megabytes of text. FFIV on SNES was a HUGE step up in the dialogue and story content.
