Of the sub-compacts out there, the Mini is still the one I'd most likely consider...

Anyways, as far as safety is concerned, TopGear did a crash test on a Smart Car, and damn, that thing is like a rock.

15k may be a bit high, but I'd like for USA to be a lot more efficient-conscient. USA is all about lavish spending and wastefulness. I want to see a trend to more efficiency. I just hate it that we stand for wastefulness to the rest of the world.

Yes, but assuming its prices shadow those in other markets, its fuel efficiency won't make it more affordable than most of the other sub-compacts (and compacts for that matter) out there...

...and there are more out there than I think the average person knows about...

Yeah, they do well in head-on collisions, but most collisions on the roads are not directly head-on. I'm willing to bet that the driver would get flattened like a pancake on a side-impact hit.

Not necessarily. The biggest problem with a side-impact crash is that it is hitting the weakest part of the car. Unlike a normal car, the Smart Fortwo isn't that big. That means a side-impact crash will hit the entire frame, not just one section of one. The cage may stay together qutie well, but you're still screwed since the car will more than likely will go into a roll.
 
I was going to buy a fuel efficient car next summer for cummuting to work. 40+ MPG on highway being a requirment. Among otehr requirements.

1) Has to have AC
2) Has to be quiet when cruising at 65-70 MPH. I will NOT buy a car that is bad with road noise.

Anyways ... I was going to buy in 2007 ... this car might make me wait to 2008. IT BETTER BE QUIET though!!!

That matters on features. if they have good creature comforts ... the price might be right.

You can't say a Lamborghine is to expensive when you can just get a Corvette .. it's not a fair comparison.
 
They have been on sale here in Vancouver for quite a while, and no I wouldn't buy one...

They aren't really that affordable, and I would hate to think what happens if one gets T-boned by an Expedition (I have seen the Smart front-end crash tests, but haven't seen any side, high impact point tests)...
