Will you be in line to buy a Smart Car in 2008?

Funny, I saw one driving around where I work last week. It's a blue one. The guy must've imported it over. It's a total chick car though.

Interesting, I've never seen one in the States.

A majority of people driving them in Europe were men, but I can see how it could be perceived as a "chick car." You really can't go wrong with 40-70mpg, though. 🙂

no. americans are accustomed to large cars. hell that is why toyota has to make the RAV4's seats wider.

but even for small car lovers like myself... it doesn't make much sense to buy such a small car at a high price. you're better off with a compact that gets slightly worse milage. (such as the scion xA/xB or a corolla)

How much are they going for in Canada, Pepsi90919?

I wonder if you could purchase one in Canada and drive it down to the US. Has anyone had any experience with car-purchasing internationally, and is it pretty painless to buy a car in Canada for use in the US?

Affordable? They are incredibly inaffordable for what you're getting. My wife's best friend has one. She paid about $25,000cdn for it when all was said and done. Economically you'd be far better off dropping $15k on a brand new cobalt. $10,000 will pay for a lot of gas.

That said, she's single and bought it more to be the person in town that has a smart car, so that's an entirely different story. 🙂

One of my dad's friends over in italy totaled his going 60kph, he was fine though. I suppose it's should be pretty strong though with a titanium cage in a semi-spherical design.

I see tons of them driving around in Vancouver bc

maybe they are ok for short distance urban commuting. I heard they are expensive too

I'd rather get a Nissan Versa. You get a lot more for your money. I'd be tempted by a Smart Roadster though. It's a sexy little car.

I couldn't see myself being really happy with a car that small. If I were in the market for a new car, and I was really concerned about economy I'd look at compacts like the neon was. Small, good mileage, and you don't have to worry about making up the initial investment in hybrid tech, which I'm not entirely convinced you would on a car you bought today.

That said, I can see how someone who only traveled through an urban area might want one (although they'd usually have access to good mass transit).

Smart cars aren't hybrids. They're just really small cars with small engines, but still expensive.

I like driving a small car, but I'd have to see if my ass could be shoehorned into that thing.

BTW-I'm stuck driving my pickup now that my son got a job and took over the Escort.
