It was only announced 2 years ago, and is supposed to be released this year, though there is no set date.

I enjoy world in conflict. It's not really a RTS though. More of a ... RTT? I guess.

The problems with RTS nowadays is that they try to be overly complicated and bloat the games with useless shits. They should have kept it simple, remember Dune?

There are obviously differences, but they both appeal to people that prefer the monotony of micromanaging characters, as well as the social gamer crowd. Whether that involves clicking on a toilet when your crap-meter is too high or raiding for phat lewt with your e-buddies is irrelevant.

Wrong forum.

Never really got into either of these games.

Wrong forum?

Anyway, I wonder if SC2 will even come close to touching SC. The new statt doesn't really seem up to the task.

The same good for D3. Diablo 3 looks like a mess right now.

I enjoyed how completely different all the Blizzard games were, but the new trio seem so similar in many ways.

I'm buying both SC2 and D3, so I'll see whether they live up to their origins.

SC2 looks frickin' awesome so far. They already have working builds of it, but are actually letting the experienced South Korean super gamers get their feet wet with it first so that any glaring balance issues can be fixed.

I really dont think sims players and WoW players overlap much...

Have you tried Supreme Commander? Fantastic RTS game with an awesome storyline:

There's 3 factions available to play, and they're all at war with each other. However, no matter what faction you play, the story makes it sound like they're the good guys :) Kind of unique-- there's always an "evil"faction and a "good guys" faction.

Its not that the player basis overlap very much, but that they have very similar functions.

For example, most "girl gamers" play one of these two games as their claim to "girl gamerdom".

Personally, I hate the term "gamer", but if you are going to use the term, play something better than WoW or the Sims.

Yeah i suppose they are similar. One turns peoples minds to mush the other attracts people whos minds are already mush. Somone i know used to play FPS and RTS and he could never beat me at anything but he came close a few times, a competant gamer but now hes totally useless at everything except WoW, its all he can play anymore. Hopeless... He would probably fail at online advertisement pullup game...

WoW isnt a bad game though, just a shame it turns peoples minds to mush occasionally, in my free month of playing it i could tell it was decent, just a bit repetitive and restrictive for my liking. AoC looks way more fun.

That's a pretty broad sweep there. So you don't like 90% of games out there? Because that's what video games in general usually do.

No, it isn't.

I just don't consider maintenance to be entertainment. You could probably take my statement and apply it to an extreme sect of any game following, but most games don't have to be like that. Counter-Strike, for example, requires playing the same few maps over and over until you're a master of the headshot if you want to be great at the game, but it's still very possible to play just an hour a day and get your jollies. Aside from potential social aspects, there is little else that The Sims and World of Warcraft have going for them.

Good argument!

Hmmm...how should I counter that? I GOT IT!

"Yes it is."

Man, someone's going to quote my zinger for their sig. I pwned you with my comeback!

C&C was fun, but the more you played it, the less fun it became due to major imbalances. All the sequels were even worse in this regard. Starcraft was fun, but I never got over the forced micromanagement that was imposed by the intentionally antiquated interface. The balance was great, though. Total Annihilation was just a phenomenal game, much better than these two in terms of what you could do and being able to plan at a higher level because you could automate so much and have huge groups. Age of Empires and its ilk were also quite good, but got long in the tooth quickly.

In short, yes. There already have been RTS games as good or better.

gotta echo the Dawn of War series.

And also, the C&C Generals, Red Alert 3, and C&C 3: Tiberium Wars have all been stellar(9+) games. The people who shit on the C&C series should really try them out.

AoE2 and Dune 2 were the best ever!
Otherwise, at the top of my list are:
AoE1, Warcraft 2, C&C, C&C2 Red Alert, Dune 2, Warcraft 1.

Currently playing AoM which isn't bad but definitely not up there with AoE and AoE2.

Anything good right now? I played the C&C Tiberium Wars or Tiberium Sun, whatever that was called. It was decent until the aliens came into play.

There are already RTS games as good and much better. Try Company of Heroes and the original Dawn of War. Try C&3.

These games cant touch Starcraft and TS as far as the whole "classic" and "original" thing goes, but they are much better games from where they stand.

Can you queue up multiple units in Starcraft? NO. Can you take cover? NO. Can you do group formations? HELL NO. Does Starcraft have good gfx by todays standards? NO again. Does Starcraft's mechanics where you can shoot down a BATTLECRUISER with 10 marines make any sense? NO. Does Starcraft have the resource point system which is superior in every way to the annoying, outdated, time consuming and tedious resource gathering via drones, scvs, etc? NO, NO and NO.

Look, I admit that Starcraft was awesome and the best out there FOR IT'S TIME. I also admit that it's story and cutscenes are superior to even today's games
. But there are much better games out there right now. Better even then Starcraft II. By far. Blizzard is no longer the innovator. just look at how many different units and ideas they stole from Dawn of War and other RTS games! Did someone say.. RAPTORS?! Jetpack infantry? Tiberium Troopers? "Sickle" from RA3? I can keep going!

I am looking forward to Diablo3. But I don't really care for SCII unlike the original. I'll check it out, sure, but I am not shivering in anticipation.

As for Tiberian Sun, it was awesome because of innovation. The huge diversity of units, the destructible terrain, the awesome music and movies, and story which rivals today's top games.... The underground tunneling units.. The list goes on and on. HOWEVER, it is still inferior overall to Company of Heroes IF compared which it shouldn't be. I wish TS was reincarnated with C&C3's engine and features... but it ain't going to happen because EA doesn't make good games very often. The only good ones I know of are C&C3 and Deadspace.

C&C3 was fantastic. RA3 and to some extent C&C3:KW were letdowns though. I never played Generals.

Yeah, it already exists and is called Company of Heroes. I know a lot of people would disagree, but I never really liked Starcraft.

yeah i was never big on starcraft. i loved warcraft, and C&C red alert (generals was good, as well), but i always wanted something else.

Rome: Total War is fantastic, and is one of my favorite games ever. Company of Heroes is great and blows any C&C game out of the water, IMO.

AGREED. Anyone remember Rise of Nations. Another great RTS game.

There was another one I played back in the days. I believe it was during Warcraft I days. It was a Mars RTS. The cd was red and had some alien's on it. You could play Marines or Alien, it was a great game, i just can't remember the name of it. Might be MARS haha.
