Blizzard has been in decline since the original Starcraft, so I doubt the sequel will come anywhere near.

 bahah, good joke!

World of Warcraft

R.I.P. Blizzard

There's no denying that WoW is the most successful MMORPG to date, whether you like it or not.

If company X releases a game that doesn't appeal to you then it is going under?

I love WoW, its amazing, brilliant! You know why? The money those poor saps who pay for it every month is going to develop starcraft II x3 (because we get 3 games now not just 1) and diablo III. WoW is one of the best things to happen to blizzard.

Totally agree.

People who compare WoW to the fucking Sims obviously have not played both games. That's a flat out dumbshit comparison.

There are obviously differences, but they both appeal to people that prefer the monotony of micromanaging characters, as well as the social gamer crowd. Whether that involves clicking on a toilet when your crap-meter is too high or raiding for phat lewt with your e-buddies is irrelevant.

That's a pretty broad sweep there. So you don't like 90% of games out there? Because that's what video games in general usually do.

No, it isn't.

Good argument!

Hmmm...how should I counter that? I GOT IT!

"Yes it is."

Man, someone's going to quote my zinger for their sig. I pwned you with my comeback!

There isn't really any argument to it. If someone said "90% of the time the sky is brown with purple polka dots", the natural reply is "No, it isn't". Your claim was so utterly false, there was little else to say.

If I really try to spell it out, just look at the list of games released in 2009, or any other year. Barely any of them match your description. The only types of games that match that description are MMOs, The Sims, and a few other RPGs with notable online communities. Every other type of genre, which is by far the great majority of released games, fails to meet the two stated qualifications.

In a nutshell, he described a action/reward system. That's what most games are- you do something (solve a puzzle, accomplish something, etc) and get a reward.

I like your "I so sure of myself that I can dismiss anything" attitude.

More specifically, I described an action/reward system where the action exists solely for the sake of gathering a reward, typically in the form of an increased number related to one's character. One could rest a thousand times for the sole purpose of killing Amnish Guards (the action) to gain some experience and gold (the reward). However, Baldur's Gate II provides the reward through the action, via exploration, quests, or whatever. The character's attributes on their own are fairly meaningless, provided that they are strong enough to make the game possible to beat.

I am probably in the minority that enjoyed RA3. Other than that though, I am merely waiting for SC2.

Overall, I think Company of Heroes has probably been the only RTS game in recent years that's come anywhere near attaining the levels of user devotion that StarCraft has...patch order notwithstanding. Apart from that...all the other RTSs that have come and gone have their loyal fanbases, but very few really gained lasting widespread approval (the Dawn of War series, perhaps). It happens: how many people still compare modern FPSs to Half-Life 2 or even Quake II/III, for instance?

if you were a gamer in that period, no games will ever compare.

Meh I grew up in that period and I disagree. To me it just seems like people can't get over nostalgia.

Also Total Annihilation > Starcraft and CNC so badly. I won't even begin to list all the innovations TA brought to the genre. It still remains as the king of all RTS games. Supreme Commander never even came close to everything that TA did so well.

In no way shape or form is the pretend crap you do in any one game any better than the pretend crap you do in WoW or the Sims.

i dunno, i generally play games to have fun. click-grinding in WoW to get 'level 60 pants of sublime reckoning' or something seems pretty lame to me and most people who play more action oriented games.

and yes, i've played wow. i grew bored of it before level 20 and quit at about 30 when i realized i was going to have to grind for another 100 hours before i could see the game's 'good' content.

As someone who Got full Tier2 when it was the most badass thing out there, later got full Tier6, rerolled and collected some Tier7....

The 'good' content was level 1-59.

The A.I. was a bit retarded sometimes, but yeah. My favorite RTS and best value out of any game of the time. Crazy number of 3rd part units and maps released since game first came out.
Starcraft and C&C were great, but TA was the best in terms of warfare strategy.

Starcraft is so much better than TA. TA dosent have the customs which is why 50k+ people are still playing starcraft on battle.net today

This. CoH is IMO the best RTS in recent years. I'm not sure if anything can top Starcraft in terms of simplicity and balance, but CoH is extremely well-done.

Maximilian...

You need to take a college logic course...:) The number of people playing the game does not equate with the quality of the game. More people watch 'American Idol' or 'Real Housewives of Orange-County' than '60 Minutes', PBS, or 'Charlie Rose'.

I like Starcraft too, but for me TA was better, particularly the 'TAUP' mod.

I really liked the first several command and conquers...

but when they went to that new engine for EBFD, Generals, C&C 3 and now RA3...

its just not as great. sure the graphics are better... but the gameplay just isnt nearly as good.

maybe you need to take one. he said it had 50k people because of the custom content not because it was better

Well, there must be a reason why Starcraft is still a competitive game with a strong e-sport presence.

That was Maximilian's point, no need to get condescending.

After 10 years... with a video game... it really says a lot to have that amount of players. I dont actually know if that numbers for battle.net or just the gateway im on either, it could be much more.
