Aren't there LED monitors?

LED monitors are still LCDs, they're just backlit with LEDs instead of florescents.

Not if they're OLED displays.

What if SED becomes a real technology?

OP: "LCD" replaced "CRT" as a term, not monitor.

SED is dead, and it looks like LaserVUE is toast too. I had high hopes for those 2 technologies. Plasma is on death spiral.

No. The monitor is the computer. Just ask 95% of old people. Just call it the computer to fit in.

Also, if it ever goes down, you can just reverse the polarity of the deflector dish, and that usually fixes it.

We only call them LCDs because there are competing technologies. I generally refer to them as monitors unless I am making a distinction. I do the same for CRTs and plasma monitors.

I suspect they won't last long enough to become "Monitor". Even if they do last decades, they still may never acquire the name "Monitor". It's very possible that the term "Monitor" has become dead and will eventually be completely removed from usage. I really think the term "Display" will replace "Monitor", it's just more accurate and intuitive.

My whole point is that when everyone was using CRT monitors, no one referred to them as CRT's. Now that everyone has LCD's monitors, they just call them LCD's.

That's because there are alternative technologies, including older CRTs (which I do call CRTs now), plasma screens, OLEDs, etc. No need to call a CRT a CRT back in the day, because it was basically the only common tech. LCD is dominating consumer monitor market now, but not for long.

And there are those who call it "the computer"

(A guy in my office, just the other day, turned off "the computer" by hitting the power button on his monitor. I would not have believed it if I had not seen it myself. As he got up to leave, I asked, "So, um, are you going to turn off your computer, too?")

No one did...until there were LCDs. ;)

My mother-in-law has a "flat" CRT and she calls it a "flat screen". I guess, technically, she is right, but 99.9999999% of people would assume she means a LCD and not a monster unit with a "flat" face.

She is correct. Flat screen=CRT with a flat screen. Flat panel=LCD/plasma.

I never referred to my old monitor as a 'CRT' so no, I'd still refer to my lcd display as a monitor.

I remember plenty of people calling them CRTs.
