Will the media ever stop making a big deal about tasers?

okay, so the lady is asked 3 times to calm down from being loud and profane, then asked to cease and desist or she will be arrested, and finally told that she was under arrest and she continued to resist and argue and back away.

what's the officer supposed to do, keep asking nicely? heck, i'd prefer that the policy allowed for full-on baton smashing by this point, so i think a taser is a rather nice way to resolve the situation. i don't want someone frantically running around the store away from the police, so what's the big deal here?

Men vs. Woman. Yep, a taser was needed to aid these weak, doughnut eating, outta shape fat boys. What were they afraid she was gonna do, pull a lipstick, or kick em in the groin?

A police officer's job is to deal with loud and profane people without needlessly escalating the situation to physical violence and arrest.

More importantly, cursing and screaming at a police officer is Constitutionally protected free speech. According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement:

Unless a suspect?s words actually incite a reaction from onlookers or create a danger to others (such as shouting ?fire? in a crowded theater), they are protected as free speech. A person who curses at others or officers may not be arrested for disorderly conduct. Incidentally, use of intermediate weapons such as dart-firing stun guns or pepper gas would likewise be inappropriate on a person who is only yelling and cursing at officers or others.

The arrest was illegal and the officer should be fired.

Bingo!

Yep.

Law Enforcement Question: Are cops trained to use tasers tased themselves, or pepper sprayed? They should have their non-lethal implements used on themselves before they think about using it on the public.

300 people in the US have died from "non-lethal" tasers since they were introduced.. I wish the media would make a bigger deal.

Have you ever been tased?

Do you realize your heart and brain are electrical and when you send thousands of volts into the body there is a very good chance you will die?

Ding! It isn't that tasers shouldn't be used at all, its that they are being used in situations where they aren't called for. Officers have less restraint using them than with their more lethal counterparts. Tasers are designed to be used in place of lethal means, but only in those same situations where deadly force would normally be authorized. If officers cannot be persuaded to use them as such, then they should be trained with the personal experience of being on the other end.

Damn f'ing straight.

Police arrested people just fine before tasers (painful and chance of being lethal) were handed to them. Maybe they should try doing it they way they've done it for centuries and use tasers for violent people.

Tasers were developed as a defense tool for LEOs as a less lethal option than firearms.

Now the police just use them as compliance tools rather than defense.

For all you kids who think cops are just gov't thugs - they are pepper sprayed and when my buddy went through his schooling he was tased as well.

<- shakes head at the level of hate displayed here for cops.

It is a good thing we have those cops. Protecting use from people who leave best buy with buying anything and forgetting their credit card. That will teach her for threating best buy profits with a sale delayed by a few minutes.

Do you realize that the amperage in a tazer will not effect the heart or brain at all? It is much to low.

Wrong.

Tasers were developed as an alternative means to hands on fighting. Its my taser or my Asp...you pick which one. One will leave significant bruising and damage...one will stop after 5 seconds.

Yeah because it was only about delaying profits. Man you people are dense. The cop was called over because of the sudden exit(which is fine). Lady proceeds to disobey cops commands(not fine). She then resists arrest (not fine). You tell me who is at fault here - the cop who was trying to do their job(by trying to figure out if the card might be part of a fraud) or the lady who did not comply with extremely simple commands(an perfectly resonable) by the cops.

The commands were illegal. A cop has no authority to force someone to stop cursing and yelling.

Except this was about a CC incident which the lady caused. She did not comply with the officer who was trying to get to the bottom of the CC thing. So while you may want to attempt to make this about swearing - it was much more than that.

Wow, I can't believe the level of angst you kiddies have. Sheesh. Here's a hint - if you've done nothing wrong - DO NOT escalate the situation. How freaking hard is that?

Let keep it simple pig on power trip teasers a woman because she didn't Respect His Authority. But lets play along what about the transaction supported the claim that the credit card was stolen and that her actions where part of a fraud? The police never should have responded to the call in the first place.

Why do you guys bother arguing with FASCISTsortaGUY? It's not very productive. The guy will side with authority on every issue, and will be as bullheaded about it as possible.

I could add a few names to that group.

So could I, but the mods get their panties in a bunch when you "single people out", or whatever term they are using for it nowadays.

She didn't comply with what? The illegal order to stop yelling and cursing?

I would like to see the police report to determine if the woman did disobey any legal orders. However, the article and the "disorderly conduct" charge suggest that the Taser/arrest was based solely on the woman's "verbally profane, abusive, loud and irate" behavior, which is a blatant First Amendment violation.
