PC's don't have that crap.
Edit: Neither does the DS. People want to play games, not have a bunch of added crap they will never use. Well, maybe casual trendy gamers will like the xbox live crap.

I think a decentralized approach is not the way to go. MS has nailed with Xbox Live. Despite it's price tag, it offers so many advantages over other models. First, you are assured that the games you are playing are lag-free because everyone is on high-speed. Second, like thraxen said, it allows you to avoid playing with certain asshats over and over again and discourages people from being jerks online to begin with. Not to mention they have an awesome content delivery system. Sorry, but MS really got it right with xbox live, IMO it was the best feature of the original xbox.
agreed, and whoever knocks xbox live has most likely never used it before.
i do not know one person who has used xbox live and says that online gaming on any other console, or even PC, is better than it. hell just compare playing Halo 2 on system link using tunneling software and then go play it on xbox live ... tell me which one is better.

thats what you are paying for ... $50/yr to game online. if you dont pay the $50/yr fee you can still have access to all that other crap for free (demos, trailers, xbox live arcade, messages, friends list).
These are the things I have a hard time understanding why people pay for. Demos for PC = free. Trailers for PC = free. AIM, MSN, XFIRE, etc = Free. 90% of online games = free. All you pay for is the internet connection.
Hmm some of you are really having a hard time reading lol.
Again ... Trailers for 360 = free, demos for 360 = free. the ONLY thing you are paying the $50/yr for is to PLAY online for free with the global xbox live service that is on the back end.
just compare the PS2 online play to the xbox live online play and you will see exactly WHY people prefer playing on xbox live. The online play must pass a certain series of tests before it can be released to the console. The online play must have voice chat, and it will also have the global friends list.
games that come out on PC have no standards. sure some games can have 64 people playing online at once, but is the game actually playable? in most FPS cases the answer to that is no due to lag. it's the same how car amps are always rated MUCH higher than what they ACTUALLY put out while using them.
WIth the standards that are set by MS and must be met for a game to be on xbox live, it must be actually playable, it must have the friend list incorporated, and it must work in a unified system known as xbox live. I've played every console online, and as I stated previously, I would gladly rather pay $50/yr to play on xbox live than play for free and have an online service like the NDS currently has.

Last time I checked, BF2 was playable with 64 players.
