MISTAKE

I loaded up the cart with everything I've always wanted, but never had time to get :D The cart was piled so high I couldn't load it up anymore. My jaw dropped when the bill came to $440, but after using that stupid Kroger card it went down to $338---we usually spend about $150 on our family of 4 LOL!

It took two freakin' hours to put groceries away heheheh. Who wants dinner!!!!!

men shoppers. :p

you probably didn't even do any price comparisons, eh?

Sure I did! If it was a good deal, I bought a LOT of it! :D
like a bear going into hibernation, you just felt the need to stock up!

With the cost of fuel now, it isn't economical, particularly when you are 40 miles from a metro as I am. The added cost of running around for 'sales' and 'specials' is more than what would be saved...not to mention the cost of my time, which is valuable. :)

Good, healthy food costs money. That's just the way it is.

I guess it varies based on where you live then. I live with around ten super markets in a 5 mile radius. I can look at the weekly flyers I get in the mail. Create a shopping list. Go to the super market, get in and out within 20 minutes.

Good, healthy food doesn't have to cost a lot of money.

Wow, just off the top of my head.

Curious, about how much a month? And for 1 kid or more?

I honestly have no clue.

1 2 year old in size 5 - probably 4-5 per day
1 6 month old in size 3 - 5-6 per day

I try to stock up in bulk at Target, but I often have to buy the ~30 packs at the grocery store.

What kills us is formula. We had issues with puking and settled on Nutramigen. It costs twice as much as any other formula ($25 for a small can whichs lasts about 3-4 days). I have almost got him back to Enfamil Lipil, so that will be nice.

God damn...$25 for 4 days or formula? That kid costs more to feed then I do. Why can't he just use the boob? (Sorry, I've been trying to wrap my head around future kid costs lately...and have been mostly shitting my pants over it.)

Kids are not cheap... The regular formula is a. half the price and b. available on sale sometimes. Nutramigen is small tin full price only... :(

Keep in mind that the boob may be "free" but a nursing mother eats more than even a pregnant woman...

You guys must get raped with prices then. Market Basket is kind of a low fi supermarket. They do not use data mining science (the shop card) to try to understand what people buy and they do not invest millions into new technologies (self scan, scan and shop, etc). As a result, they have lower prices and usually end up under cutting the competition badly (they do not even have a website).

Ofcourse, with lower prices come a lower reputation, which is unfortunate, becaus eit really is not true. Having worked at Shaws, Stop and Shop, and Market Basket, I have to say that Shaws has the worst customer service while Market Basket squeeks by Stop and Shop for the best (but Hannafords beats them all). Also, Market Basket treats its employees better too (atleast the ones I worked at). You would think that since Stop and Shop is a union that they would treat you like gold. Nope. They treat you like a slave there.

You will never see a Market Basket in in say, Boston, because the rarely lease stores (the own most of their property). I think Market Basket is one of the more profitable chains too.

The thing is, I used coupons, bought Kroger brand stuff (their stuff is good!), and still spent that much. They had some great deals, it's just fresh food costs $$$$$

THANK GOODNESS. I was about go say "you better have used coupons!"

Fresh food is expensive. I freak out over the cost of fresh chicken breasts. We don't buy a lot, we just wind up going often, like every 3-4 days. Although if I know something is on sale then I'll tailor the shopping that week to include that item.

We don't comparison shop for groceries, since our closest competitor is Whole Foods but there's also Albertson's but they don't double coupons, so it better be a great deal before I head out there. Vons/Safeway the only nice one is too far out.

Low fi is an understatement at best for Market Basket. I think "craphole" is the word you're looking for.

Growing up, our family of 5 (with my mom and 4 guys) would spend about $150 a week, I think. My mom handled the grocery side of things, but she did a really good job budgeting it, and getting coupons and whatnot. Currently between my wife and I, and our two daughters (who don't eat much, very young) we spend probably $80-$90 a week.

yeah...there are certain stores that really need to be updated (especially in NH). If you go to any of the Tewksbury, MA stores, they are pretty updated (ofcourse, the headquarters is in Tewksbury, MA)

If he was a fatty, he could have gotten by for less than $100. :p

You spend $1352 a month on food? What a waste.

Yeah, we do have Market Basket stores here in Boston. I shop at one. It's definitely not a craphole. It's on par with a more local chain called Johnny Foodmasters. If I had to rate the stores it would go:

Foodmaster/Market Basket < Shaws < Stop n' Shop < Whole Foods.

I goto those places for everything but meats. Goto a butchery for that stuff. Much better quality and almost always lower prices.

if it's just for him, then it's a waste, no one needs to eat $1350 worth of food in one month.

Sommerville, Quincy, Malden and Chelsea is not Boston. There is no Market Basket in the CITY of Boston. To be more straight forward, Market basket would be eaten alive in the city of Boston.

That really isn't a terribly large amount of money to spend if you are the type who likes to stock up. My family of 3 spend that much on food about every 3-4 weeks.
