I don't really like red meat . I'm also too lazy to really cook, so I just buy things I can nuke. Although, pasta is usually fine as it cooks pretty fast.

learn to cook, its a whole hell of a lot better tasting and better for you.

Yep, it takes some work but its worth it.

It is opposite for us, but mainly because I am looking for the deals and generic brands and she just loads up on whatever name brand she wants without looking at the price.

The thing is, I used coupons, bought Kroger brand stuff (their stuff is good!), and still spent that much. They had some great deals, it's just fresh food costs $$$$$

Is Kroger one of those stores that have a store card? (I live in Market Basket country).

Yeah. I think they're the largest grocery store chain in the US now (at least one of the largest). It's my favorite grocery store.

Ahhh man...so they pull that, "you save this much when you use the card" trick? I used to wrk at Stop N Shop and you should see people's faces glow when they scan their card and see $20 come off the price. It's nice, but they could have saved even more money by going 5 miles away to Market Basket. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

You need to go with a list based upon what meals you are going to prepare for the week next time you shop. We rarely spend over 65 dollars when we food shop. It is just me and my wife so that helps.

Seems about right. I spend between $80 - $100 per week on just myself, so multiply that by 4 and away you go.

Fritzo - to put things into perspective as to how much you spent - what does your wife normally average in terms of what the grocery bill is?

I actually buy fresh fruit and produce, just usually not much meat. Also, the microwaveable food tends to be more expensive when you compare how much you get. I'm paying for the convenience. But I should say that my quote is also only for a week or sometimes maybe 5 days or so. It also doesn't include any social times out.

Definitely, I love chicken, but it can get fairly expensive at times.

With the cost of fuel now, it isn't economical, particularly when you are 40 miles from a metro as I am. The added cost of running around for 'sales' and 'specials' is more than what would be saved...not to mention the cost of my time, which is valuable. :)

This is why you'll notice that Wal-Mart's grocery store prices start low and then gradually climb. It's all about getting you used to going there for things and then jacking the prices up on some items or most items. You don't want to go to 3+ stores to get all the things you want, so you just put up with the higher prices. Although, I know ATOT is too good for Wal-Mart ;). Personally, they have the best selection of nuke-able Mexican food :p. But my god, they are absolutely horrible at keeping things in stock. I went there the other day after going out with friends (it was 11PM ish, so the only stores open were Wegmans, Price Chopper and Wal-Mart... the latter two being on the way home, but PC is more expensive) and I wanted some Honey Bunches of Oats and Simply Lemonade. Yet they didn't have any! They had Simply Limeade, but I want Lemonade :|! Not to mention the second time I went and finally got those two items, I wanted some Simply Orange (No Pulp, Non-Calcium) but they barely had any... then some guy pulled a pallet out with some in it, but I had no desire to wait.

Not if you can L2ReadtheNutritionFacts. The only "bad" items I buy are the Mexican items, but I try not to go with those... but they are so good . I also like the taste of the things I buy.

Also, who in the world says I don't know how to cook? I choose not to cook, because I'd rather not waste my time.

It's the exact opposite situation for us. If I let my wife shop alone, she comes home with a bunch of organic crap and over-priced items we don't need.

I loaded up the cart with everything I've always wanted, but never had time to get :D The cart was piled so high I couldn't load it up anymore. My jaw dropped when the bill came to $440, but after using that stupid Kroger card it went down to $338---we usually spend about $150 on our family of 4 LOL!

It took two freakin' hours to put groceries away heheheh. Who wants dinner!!!!!

men shoppers. :p

you probably didn't even do any price comparisons, eh?

Good, healthy food costs money. That's just the way it is.

I guess it varies based on where you live then. I live with around ten super markets in a 5 mile radius. I can look at the weekly flyers I get in the mail. Create a shopping list. Go to the super market, get in and out within 20 minutes.

Good, healthy food doesn't have to cost a lot of money.

This could be the genius of the OP at work. He'll never have to buy groceries again! :D

The grocery business loves people like you. Shopping for food is like buying a car. If you know what you want and what you're willing to spend you win. If you walk in the door and get seduced by everything shiny you wind up making payments for 6 years.

Judging from his post count, I'd say yes

I have a family of 4 and I like to cook. I'm 6'4 and 215---not exactly a "fatty".

How does post count = weight? Just curious.

Low post count = doesn't sit around at computer and more time for activity
High post count = fatty bum bum

That is the rationale, at least...but definitely not true!

Enjoy all of that food...it's the equivalent of probably six months of groceries for me!

Yeah, I do this, but in my head. I look at an ingredient and build a meal around it. I just made one too many meals heheh.

About $150, but like I said, when I shop with her it's like playing Supermarket Sweep- you have 5 seconds to get something in the cart or she's in the next isle.

This works. I did this same thing with laundry a few years ago (it was the Pink incident), and I'm not allowed to do laundry anymore.
