Why's the BMW 323 called a 323?

When it has a 2.5L engine? And then in their redesign with the same sized engine it became a 325??

i think they originally wanted to differentiate it from the 325.

another example:
540i - 4.4 liter engine

Did they make 323's and 325's at the same time? If so what was the difference?

The top o the line was the 328 at the time, and i guess they didn't think bottom of the line (325) sounded different enough from the best engine available (328), so they called it the 323.

When the 3 liter 6 came around they called it by its normal displacement name, the 325

just to clear that up, from 98-01 it was 323 & 328. from 01- pres. it has been 325 & 330. now they also have the 330 with the preformance package which is actually a slightly different engine, but you get the idea.

they also had the 316i with a 1.9 litre engine, a 318i with the same engine but 16valve and the 320i with a 2.2 litre engine. It came about in about 96 when the newer 2.5litre engine was introduced alongside the 2.8

edit also the m5 which is technically a 4.9 rather than the usually represented 5.0 iirc

In Canada we can still get the 320i which has a 2.2L I6. 😕

They keep the names because ever since the mk1 3's they have had 316's, 320's and 323's.

It's a tradition thing and only a few of the line have the capacity in the number correct.
