Not so much the case anymore thanks to Xbox Live. I used to play consoles all the time when I was in high school/college but that pretty much died out after all of my core group of friends started to relocate throughout the country. Thanks to Xbox Live I can once again own them in sports games. :p

I know what you mean but it isn't the same. 4-8 mates in a room f0cking around on a sports game or a fighting game etc beats anything over the net. Even if you know the guys over the net. It is nice but it just doesn't have the same impact imo.

Unless they invent a virtual b!tch slap that would teleport to your mates room and give them a slap that would be good but STILL not the same!

If you could build such a hot machine for $399, call MS and sell them your idea. Certainly the people designing the next wave of hardware are clueless when compared to a couple of know-nothing losers hanging out on Anandtech.

Microsoft have made their decision to engage in the penis measuring contest now known as "the console market", it's not my fault that the specs for the next generation consoles are stupidly OTT and that it costs these companies more to make them than they sell them for.

I'd gladly call up Microsoft and tell them that their console is stupidly OTT, but why? They already know, dumbass, it's stupidly OTT because the PS3 is stupidly OTT. They wouldn't downgrade it even if they wanted to, Sony set the bar too high.

Hah, that's not the point. I really want to know the specs on this PC for $399 that can do as well as the 360. I'd love to build one since my current rig is slowly becoming a fossil.

One point to consider: If you do any work with a PC and play on a console, then you need a $400 PC, a $200 monitor, and a $400 XBOX.
Instead, you could have a $800 computer and a $200 monitor, which at least should approach XBOX gaming quality.

But if someone has only a need to play, and not to work on a computer, a gaming PC is a waste of money.

You're not counting the HDTV you need to make the xbox worthwhile. That's gonna be... what, $500 at the very least? With options going well into the thousands? Not everyone is a drooling idiot capable of enjoying the trash on TV these days, thus not everyone feels the need to own a television. If I were to purchase a console, I'd need to buy a television to go with it. And if it were an xbox 360, I'd be limited to old-school resolution unless I spent even more and got an hdtv.

And in two years it'll be a $100 video card. Interesting that the console people come out of the woodwork once every 5 years, when the industry is at its strongest. Odd that I don't hear any of you lauding the Xbox 1's leet 640x480 graphics, 733mhz processor or gf3 ;)

However that awful Xbox you despise so much still has great games coming out for it all these years later. People who own and develop for consoles understand more than simple resolution and mhz whoring.

Personally, I think the consoles' younger, less tech savvy target demographic shows in the games which are developed for them. I couldn't care less about most; the only game I'd like to play but can't on my PC is Gran Turismo 3 (well, 4 now I guess, but I played 3 extensively at a friend's place and liked it). On the other hand, the FPSs, MMORPGs and RTSs available for the PC are much more up my alley.

Oooh, I get the bold treatment... I must have gotten under someone's skin ;) No, I wouldn't purchase a television set to watch DVDs - my PC is capable of that. And if you're playing in 640x480, your whole price argument goes out the window. A $100 used PC can do that.

And PC games are available which you can't get for any console.

For 1 year out of every 5 consoles are the better price : performance option. Did you fail grade school math?

72.8% of statistics are made up on the spot. Got a link to the number of games for each platform? Don't add xbox numbers to ps2 numbers, btw - then you'd have to double the platform cost you're figuring in.

Regardless, as they target kids and people for whom AOL is "high-tech", most console games do not interest me in the least.

I've never spent more than $200 on a video card, and my PC has been more gaming-capable than the xbox or ps2 for three and a half years now.

It seems that no one is aware of other consoles, you know, other than the Xbox360. A $99.99 GCN (with a free game) is worth infinitely more than a gaming quality PC, to me. I can play RTSs and FPSs on my PC, but I will never get to enjoy games like Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, or even Pokemon on a PC. Even a PS2, however much their going for these days, is worth a lot more, because face it, PCs are awful at RPGs. MMORPGs are okay, but I can spend hundreds of hours on a game by Nippon-Ichi, who, as of now, only do games for the PS2.

Also, graphics seem to be a main point brought up in this argument. Why does it matter? Better graphics look better, but just because consoles are obsolete in that part in one to three years or whatever doesn't matter. The SNES probably over 10 years obsolte in graphics, and it still houses some of the best games ever made.

My $0.02

do a "search"

the PC gaming market is very small compared to the consoles.

let's see . . . what's in your rig now? :p

for $400 upgrading my PC there is no way i could equal the xbox360's gfx . . . currently: AGP system - 9800xt/1GB PC3500/NW P4@3.21Ghz and Abit IC7 . . .
how?

the best agp videocard is a x850xtPE . . . no more AGP . . . it would cost BIG bucks to make a serious attempt at equaling the NextGen consoles [a 7800GTX or x1800xt . . . and that is PCIe only]

so tell me what i could do for $400 on my PC

if you can
