I like PCs because of the cutting edge. I can upgrade my PC and play bigger, better, faster games. I can't do that with my console. Although more games come out, they are limited by the hardware inside the machine. As cutting edge as it may be, it will dull over time. I like to think of my computer as a magical place where money disappears and games are born.

pc gaming pwns j00.

i have friends who are more into consoles, in fact the PC is little more than a leech machine to them. yet every time they see the same games on the PC, they're blown away.

besides, everyone here knows building gaming rigs kicks ass :D

not that graphics is the only criteria... but also, i agree with those that say mouse & keyb ftw... gotta have it for the games i play.

Until I see the Xbox 360 or PS3 in person I can't say. But for whats out right now a PC looks way better than any console.

Not the end of the thread. You miss the point of consoles entirely. Therefore, your post doesn't even count.

The PS2 does - nobody used it.
THANK YOU!

As for my reasons to use a computer for gaming:

Age of Wonders
Age of Mythology
Age of Empires
Aliens Vs Predator
Baldurs Gate
Command & Conquor
Deus Ex
Empire Earth
Freelancer
Guild Wars
Homeworld
Imperium Galactica
Jedi Knight
Leisure Suite Larry
Master of Orion
Mechwarrior
NeverwinterNights
No One Lives Forever
O.R.B
Pax Imperia
Quake
StarCraft
Total Anihilation
Warcraft
Z

And before ANYBODY says something stupid like, "You can get those on the consoles too", NONE of those games were done properly. Every single one on the list that got moved over was dumbed down so the console lovers could use it. Deus Ex and Baldurs Gate were two noticible offenders.
It also amazes me how many people say the graphics are better on a console, yet they never know what I'm talking about when I bring up interlacing. They dont understand why their 30 inch tv costs less than my 19 inch monitor, and why I can see more detail on it.

Sorry about the spelling. I get angry every time somebody asks the question. And it get asked way too much around here.
More games to come in another post.

you wont need to for another 2 years...I still dont think PCs have caught up to XBOX/PS2...in most areas
PS3 will use a modified 7800 type chip for graphics.
XBox uses a modified Geforce 3/4 series chip.

So we're on the same level of tech as the PS3, and 3/3 generations beyond the XBox, but PC's haven't caught up yet?

PC's have: Better graphics, more features, mods/addons (user made), better controller options, better sound, the ability to play whatever music on the PC through the speakers, more save game storage space.
The only place the PC hasn't caught up with consoles is in the ability for publishers to release finished ie: not horribly buggy games.

1) grahics always hae and always will look better on a consle because the programmers can optimize the game for the hardware 11ty billion times better because it never changes
PCs may have a faster card or CPU but they still dont look as good

2) better grapgics - NO -
more features - NO they are released as the same game,
AD-Ons - currently YES however i see that changeing as they all go online, XBL for example,
Controller - thats totally an opinion,
you can use the xbox to play different music during the game also in a bunch of games
, if you have even a simple HT setup PCs dont have better sound,,
both the xbox2 and ps3 are gonna ship with HDDs, do you really need more then 10 gigs to save games to?

WHAT? There's a geforce FOUR in the XBox, and it beats the PS2. Compare to a 7800GTX SLI setup. Not caught up? Bull.

As for the games themselves: Source games, ANY Real time strategy, any MMO...

I think that the graphics look better on a PC. If a single player game is on console & PC, I'd get the PC version.

yes and consoles generally look better, it wasent untill quite recently till they cought up to 2+ year old console hardware
and game saves take up like 10 megs at most, 10 gigs is more then enough

Don't TVs generally have a lower resolution than all monitors?

I'm not going to jump all the way into this argument because I dont really play games anymore. But all the PC versions of console games I've played and seen have looked much better.

Because I like to sit at my comfortable chair and desk with its long foldout, where I can rest my arm while using the mouse, compared to sitting on my living room floor. I like playing games on my 20.1" widescreen LCD at 1680x1050 rather than my 27" Flatscreen TV with component inputs. I like the keyboard and mouse much better than a gaming pad.

I like the fact that my computer which is well over 2 years old still plays games pretty good at 1680x1050. Only thing I upgraded in over 2 years is the video card.

Computer I bought 2.5 years ago,

P4 2.8C
1 gig ram

still runs games pretty good. Id rather not spend $400 on a next gen console only to sit on the floor and use a low resolution television and buy games for $60 a pop.

I'll agree with Anubis. Although I wouldn't say "11ty billion times better", even though a TV is lower resolution, consoles games are made to not look like a low-res game would on the PC. If you compared a game on a PC running at 1024x768 and a game running on a TV at 480p, chances are the console game on the TV will look better (if the developer of the console game did a competent job).

I own PC and XBox and to me I can get into the game way more on PC. XBox looks great and has some good games, but I can't get away from that feeling that I"m just pushing buttons and the box is really the one in control. I guess if I played XBox online I might have a different opinion, but it just seems like all the games are about figuring out the pattern it takes to accomplish the task and being able to hit the right combination of moves to make it happen. Some games are purely that, how quickly can you hit the 8 buttons and move the joystick in the right sequence...

In online games where there are other real people involved there's that element of uncertainty where you're always surprised by the strategies that others come up with....FPS's too often rely on how quickly you can out maneuver your opponent and less about out-thinking your opponent. Besides, if it weren't for PC we wouldn't have AnandTech.

^ Mods - I deserve some browny points for that in case I ever need em. :)

Xbox 360 and PS3 will bring games to us in Hi-Def. That's 1280x720p or 1920x1080i. So there goes your "1600x1200" argument.

Yeah but then you gotta spend the bigbucks on a HDTV which defeats the purpose of getting a console for cheap gaming.
