Why the GTX470 was right for me.

*Discussion of my new card was dragging the 570 thread offtopic. So here we go.*

1.) I got the card for $190 after a small rebate.
2.) The latest reviews show it ahead of what AMD is currently offering.
2a) http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/20088
3.) Noise is not an issue at all, in fact it makes less noise than my 260. Heat seems to also be a zero issue as my case temps are just fine. As for power, the review above puts it in the range of a 5870 and is less than a lightbulb ahead of newer cards.
4.) Full on Fermi. I plan to do CUDA applications and maybe even programming so I wanted the full Fermi.
5.) Throw in Physx, CUDA, 3D, Tessellation power, image quality, etc. It was an easy choice.

So besides splitting this from the other thread, I mention this because I have the feeling the 470/480's are going to be getting real cheap and will be worth a look for a lot of people. Right now the 480 is way overpriced, but if it dips under $300 or even $250 it will become a real bargain. Similar the 470 under $200 was unmatched when I made my purchase. So bring on the new cards so the rest of us can get cheap cards.

I imagine it arriving in the mail was like the classic romance of two people running through the field with arms outstretched. I'm sure you two will make a perfect match.

I agree with you on a lot of points. I was very tempted to grab 2 470s for less than 500 bucks. However because I run surround gaming, I could not just get one and the heat and power of two of them was simply too much for me to reconcile with the wife!

I spend 200 more and got 2 570s. Maybe she won't notice the new heating until summer! :0 :wub:

Lol, I imagined the same thing when I read your post but as both of them rendered in a 3d engine.

Yuk Yuk Yuk :D Thats probably to true. :)

nVidia has definitely been slashing their card deals lately. If the 6970 performs as good as the 580 I wonder if nVidia will lower the 580 to the probable price of the 6970 @ $450? I'm not sure how either company can eek out much of a profit for any of those huge chips at those prices.

I too got a 4XX series card recently. I wasn't even in the market for a card but seeing a lightly used gtx 480 for $299 shipped to my door was too much to pass up. It's all I really need since I game @ 1080p. Haven't seen the temps go past the mid to high 80's and that's playing crysis wars online too. I've actually owned a gtx 470 too. They are great cards.

Does this mean that my 2 GTX 460 1GBs are obsolete already?!? I just bought them 2 months ago.

Still great cards. I doubt most people are getting their 570s for <$300, and the prices for existing 470s will run their course as they deplete the stock. remember that the 460s run nice and cool and use a lot less power than the 470s that can be bought now for pretty decent prices. Plus, 460s are OC monsters...

1.) Because it's an Nvidia card.

Fixed your list for you. :)

A GTX470 for $190 is a great deal if you don't care about the noise. I don't really care about power use when gaming cause most of the time my computer is idling or sleeping anyway. So it's a great deal  Not to mention the card debuted at $349 back in April, so that's 55% of the original price.

My card is no louder than the case fans, maybe it's the MSI fan...don't know. But it's not an issue. Yeah I could not justify $350. $200 was the max for me. With the 570 here, I'm not sure why the 480 is still so expensive. Either they only have a few left or a major clearance is going to happen soon.

$190 is a good price for a 470, but I have seen the 460's go for $135 after rebate, and they have less heat and noise. For me at 1920x1200, I'm sure a 460 768mb would be enough. If my 8800GTS would only stop chugging through games at 30FPS+ I would upgrade already. :)

Back in the summer when there was still cashback I grabbed a 470 for the same price with the cashback and some rebates and price markdown at TD.

Now that the 570 is out I'm hoping there is a nice hot deal to get one for like 160 or 170 for SLI.

This does sound very like a planted PR story to me. Why I feel secure always having loved Nvidia!

LOL!!!

seriously, the gtx 470 for $190 is a much better deal than anything else out there imho. If I didn't already have a 460 I probably would have jumped on this deal as well.

cheapest 5870 on Newegg 249$ (sapphire).
cheapset 470 on Newegg 249$ (sparkle).

the 5870 is a much better buy at those prices, where did you find a 470 for less than 249$?
