Why the GTX470 was right for me.

3.) Noise is not an issue at all, in fact it makes less noise than my 260.
Objective sound measurements disagree:

GTX260: 51.2 dBA.
GTX470: 61.5 dBA.

Not even close.

Subjectively the GTX470 is far louder than either my GTX260+ or GXT285. It’s a night and day difference.

The GTX470 is the second loudest video card I’ve ever used, behind only the GTX480.

Does this mean that my 2 GTX 460 1GBs are obsolete already?!? I just bought them 2 months ago.

No, but you are still eligible for an EVGA step up. Might be a worthwhile thing to look into depending on how much you paid for your 460s.

It is a little noisier than it should be, but there have definitely been louder cards. I never owned the (in)famous FX 5800 Ultra so I can't comment on that, but the Radeon X1800XT and XT1900XTX were the loudest cards I've ever heard.

Like I said maybe it's the MSI fan. I apologize for not using a dB meter. I just notice my computer seems to make less noise. Of course maybe that's mostly at idle and I have my speakers too loud while gaming. Either way it sits up high and near me and it's not an issue for me.

It also depends on what gtx470 you bought (cooling fan) and what its stock voltage is (heat = fan noise).

Funny I don't remember any complaints about the gtx275 noise which is= to a gtx470 or the 5870 which is 1.6 db's lower..

The idle noise levels coming from the card are fine really, in idle you will not hear the card as we measured 39~40 dBA, which is below the threshold of noise from the PC itself.
Card setting................dBA IDLE.......dBA FULL LOAD
GeForce GTX 470.........39................42
GeForce GTX 480.........39................45

For both cards you can expect roughly similar noise levels with the GTX 480 being a notch louder when it's stressed. Once the GPU starts to heat up the fan RPM will go up real fast and the card does become audible. We measure roughly 43 dBA for the GTX 470 and 45 DBa with heavy GPU stress.

So you don't have to take my word for it.

I just handed out eight (8!) thread-crapping infractions in this thread alone...😡

Folks, knock this BS off right now, enough with the baiting and thread-crapping...my next round of infractions won't be so generously subdued.

The $470 is not available for that price. Since the 5870 has dipped into the same range, often less than the 6870, that's pretty much the best deal around these days. OF course, when the 5870 goes to around $215 and the 470 goes under $200, it's immediately posted in hot deals and they both sell out pretty quickly.

Every time the 470 goes below $200, it is a damn hot deal. Otherwise, the 5870 and the 6870 strike me as better deals.

I agree with the op. I recently got a 6870. With my monitor and games, a faster card would be almost unnoticeable. So I spent the extra on rum and decided to save on heat and power.

No thread crapping? In Video Cards? Did this subforum get a new sheriff?

Why does the 570 do 60 FP16 textures per clock vs 28 on the 470? The other specs don't look very different

Well I'm sure I would have loved to get a 580, but my toy fund aint what it used to be. So the money I saved went to whiskey. 😀 But you are right, I am very happy with a "$200" part and I am sooooooooo looking forward to the steam sale this year. Just Cause 2 for $5 please.

While I do not want to derail the conversation, I do want everyone to know that I never had the intention of "thread crapping"

On another note I hope you enjoy your new part - especially considering the news (taken with two scoops of salt as it is from FUD!) that the 6970 is only slightly faster than the 480 gtx and slower than the 570/580. Therefor your purchase is probably buyer remorse proof for over a year easily as I doubt the 560 can match the 470 gtx.

If you want to play sometime send a PM.

Keep in mind I thought the same thing but the 6870 is actually beating the 5870 when xf is compared. So if you are purchasing two don't bother with last gen.

I would purchase a 470 over a 6870 or 5870 if:
1) I did not plan to use surround gaming
2) I cared at all about physx
3) folding@home was something I was interested in

there is nothing special about the MSI gtx470 fan. you are out of your mind if you think the gtx470 is quieter than your gtx260. the gtx260 even got the nod from silentpcreview for being quiet while the gtx470 is loud as hell in comparison. I also know because I used an MSI gtx470 in my pc for a week. the gtx260 is basically dead silent and the gtx470 is the loudest card I have ever used and was completely unacceptable when gaming.

Seems you and BFG got the worst gtx470 card in existance?

Or you both use that baby Antec 300 case for a high powered card. 🙂
Relax I was kidding.🙂

DO you also pray to ANAND?

Did you ever here anyone complain about gtx275 noise?
No me either.
Then why does that link you gave me say the gtx275 is just as loud as a gtx470?

Did you also notice that the 5870 is a single db lower? Did you ever here of anyone saying the 5870 is loud?

Just food for thought.

Here is your link back..

Why do you mention the 5870? He never mentioned the 5870. He never mentioned the GTX 275 either. He is talking about the GTX 470, not about other cards. You present a red herring argument, again.

And where did you learn mathematics?

61.5 db (GTX 470) MINUS 59.3 db (HD5870) EQUALS 2.2 db, not a "single db".

With the fan at 50% I hear little or nothing and 52% at the worst at 81c (100% load). Of course the overclock is only 700 on the core but case air flow must really help. With a higher overclock and more voltage, I've set my fan profile to 'user defined' and hit around 60% and 82c at full load; then it starts to become audible.

I still can't see this being worse than a single slot 8800GT. The decibel rating may be less but the annoyance factor is far worse.
