There's some serious downward pricing pressure on all mass-market sports cars that are 5+ years old, courtesy of the new 400HP GTO and 500HP Z06 Vette, the new redesigned Mustang, and the Ford GT.

I know what you're thinking "I'm not considering any of those cars". It's like a subset of trickle-down economics. Every (Well, a good portion of) 1997-2004 Corvette owner who bought their car new is looking to trade in on the new C6s and C6 Z06s. Along the same lines, Mustang people are looking to move up to the new Mustang or GT. This creates a surplus of good-condition 1997-2004 Corvettes and similar year Mustangs.

Follow this down the chain and you end up with people selling good condition, relatively low mileage 84-90 Corvettes for sub $10k and 92-96 for $12k or so. Heck, ZR-1 Vettes (425+ HP) are down under 25k with low mileage. I think everyone here would agree that even an 84 Corvette is more desirable than an auto V6 Mustang...

BTW, I'll slap the first person who makes a rude comment about Cross-Fire injection. :)

Funny how it only took like 50 replies to finally get an answer to the original question.

Sure, I know the mustang, or the eclipse or any "sporty coupe" is going to be a POS compared to a real deal sports car. But I live in this place called reality, where theres only so much I can afford.

That being said, I want something sporty, and something that wont break down two seconds after I drive it away...if its breaking down like that at 60k regularly, than the model obviously has serious problems. Unless you rice it out, something which I am completely against, there is nothing sporty about an accord or camry, or an altima etc.

Its my first car, so I dont expect nor want it to last more than a few. I could care less about how much its worth when I'm done with it. My insurance premiums will already be absurd out of the gate (around $500 a month), so I wont be pushing anything I buy too far past the speed limit, because I'd like that to go down to a more reasonable level at some point. So performance is secondary, and I'm not in the mood to have my first car be manual shift.

So being the car newb that I am, the only models that have thus far caught my eye, being in a reasonable price range, are the mustang, the tiburon, the eclipse, and a few others that I cant seem to remember at this point. If I'm missing any other good choices, I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

But save the condescension for the YAGTs. My penis is already bigger than yours, and I dont need my car to prove that.

A payment for a new EXPENSIVE car would be in that range.

Welcome to the life of a new driver in NY city :).

Oh, my bad then. Private party all the way.
The 2000 Eclipse RS has a KBB private party value of $6500. Its not much different.

Ive been advised by too many people to stay the hell away from most mitsubishis because of reliability problems, hidden covers ups etc...

Alright then, if you had $7k to spend MAX, 70,000 miles max, private party, and was looking for a coupe to last about 4 years or so, what would you get, and why?

Go with a 5th gen Honda Prelude. You'll probably get the 97 one with @60k miles for about 6k. They are sweet looking and got 200ponies... additionally they have the honda reliability. I got one and love to death..........

A) Ford

B) Not a very good Ford, at that

C) they've all been trashed by pimple farmers (V8's) or teenage girls who can barely drive (V6).

Well, it is a Ford, it's probably a 6 cylinder, someone beat the living piss out of it, and it's a Ford.
