Why such low resale values on 1999-2001 mustangs?

So I'm in the market for a used car, and I'm looking around for something that I can pick up for ~6k with about 60,000 on it. Something sporty.

I've been looking mostly at tiburons and eclipses, and my friend tells me to check out mustangs. I figure way out of my price range, but theyre selling for about the same price, with similar miles. Only the mustang is way more powerful and obviously cooler....I certainly havent heard of any horror stories with them, but I'm last in the loop when it comes to judging how much a car should sell for. Either way, it seems a bit out of place, but I'm sure theres a good explanation.

Whats the deal?

I'd think traditionally with those cars being powerful and all, 60k miles means someone really beat the sh!t out of their car. People who buy Mustangs don't normally drive their cars like they would others.

if you do buy one dont get 94-97.

if you want to spend 6k, as much as i am an american guy, get a maxima or a galant.

well, its a five year old Ford,

they weren't too expensive in the first place, but ford's don't generally hold value

#3, its a mustang, so it's been bagged to shit.

Are those prices for the V6 or V8? Import 4 cylinder cars can wipe the floor of those V6's...they are not powerful at all..

You are most likely finding 6-cyl Autos. They are far less desireable than the GT w/5-speed, so their value is low.

There are lots of them out there...not as 'trendy' as the imports. Generally, they have been the more reliable of the Ford cars. Other pluses are that there are ton's of aftermarket parts for them. A friend of mine bought a low milage '94 GT for about 6k a few years back and he was able to turn it into a 12 second car without having to resort to nitro or any kind of forced induction. Domestics traditionally have lower re-sale value.

V8 growl with RWD for 6k...hard to beat.

Stock. The V6 Mustang of that vintage is a complete turd.

Mustangs in the 1998-2000 years are actually more reliable than the typical vehicle - that isn't a major factor. I think though, that you just found a good deal. Around here those same specs would be a $10,000 car. NADAguides.com said $10,000 as well.

Not really...blue book value doesnt really top 7k for the 2000s at all, and I've seen plenty around that price range.

I dont expect nor car if the car lasts longer than 4 years. I'd just like something nicer than your average econobox, something that wont break down as soon as I drive it away, and 6-7k is my absolute max to spend.
