Sure, but everyone shouldn't get it off. The whole country shouldn't shut down because it's the chinese new year.

Sure, but we get little to no recognition as of now, just asking for a little bit, where there are more Chinese people.
In an area so densely populated with chinese that a large amount of faculty, staff and students all taking the day off would disrupt normal operations than a day off would probably be more logical.
If the chinese new year has a religious significance than you should be able to take it off without it counting as an absence. It should not be a national holiday, and no normal business, govt. or most civic functions should not be stopped. If you're chinese and you celebrate the new year, then take it off.

I'm also curious what exact religion the new year is linked to. Is it just general prayer to gods? Or is it part of a specific religious practice? If it's not linked to any specific religious system then there isn't a very good reason for it to be a religious holiday(in the books).

As for getting recognition, I don't see why you need to be reconized any more than the other hundred or so ethnic backgrounds in America. So the jews have a regonized holiday, what about everyone else that doesn't?

I am from New York City and many schools and business would be shut down if the entire Asian population were to not show up. I am just saying that we shouldn't feel the need to "just take the day off." The Lunar New Year is link very closely to the Buddhist religion. We worship the traditional Buddhist gods of wealth, fertility, and longevity. the incense lighting is also a very religious act, as many go to a holy temple to do this.

As for your recognition comment, people have said the Jews are represented because there is such a large population of them. I believe that there are enough people that celebrate the Lunar New Year to have it recognized.
Is it linked directly to bhuddism or not?

I went to high school in an area very heavily populated by jews. We had most of the important jewish holidays off because no one would be there anyway. So I fully understand what you are talking about.

What people have said the jews have a recognized holiday because there are so many of them? Someone in this thread? If so then that doesn't hold much weight.

What exactly do you want? A national holiday for chinese new year? A general regonized hoilday for it?

The jews have a large concentrated population in certain areas and I understand why they get their holidays off. I am just questioning why chinese/koreans/vietnamese/other asians don't get a holiday off for the lunar new year, especially in large asian populated areas, i.e. NYC. What I would like is for my kids to be able to one day celebrate the most important Chinese holiday without having to worry about school.

We're not in Jerusalem. Why do we have Yom Kippur off?

For a celebration as rich in culture as it is in history, Chinese New Year sure is neffed in the US.
Anti-Communism = anti-Chinese ?
Read the thread.

Understandable. So what happens when all the chinese population takes the day off? Doesn't life stop in thoes areas if it's that heavily populated?

That is what happened in the past in the area that I went to school in. After 70% of the population didn't show up, thoes school districts made it a regonized holiday.

Unfortunately the problem is, even though many Asian communities do celebrate, as you may know many of these asian kids go to schools ALL over NYC. This prevents them all from taking off. Either way, it is 12:00 and I wish you all a happy chinese new year!!! Downing good ole

Well then that falls back to the new year being a citywide, stateywide or nationwide holiday. Which won't happen.

Either way, have fun.

Living in Las Vegas, I wouldn't even know WHEN it would be unless my grandparents told us. I remember having a few dinners at my grandparents' house after school and that would be it. Otherwise, it was just like any other day-wake up, go to school, eat dinner and go to bed.

Even when I was attending college here in California, I wouldn't have a clue when Chinese New Year was until I moved to my grandparents' place.

I'm sure if people told you how your religion/ethnic traditions should only be celebrated where it originated, you would be completely OK with it. May I ask what religion/ethnicity you are?

By the way, my attitude? Too bad you didn't read my nice and civilized discussion with Sampson. Maybe you should start thinking with that mind of yours instead of just saying dumb things like "get over it." Would it be cool if some idiot said that about 9/11, to "get over it". You wouldn't think that was too nice would you?

I'm not at all religious and my ethnicity has nothing to do with this conversation.

We probably have the largest population of many countries outside of their actual country. Why should we celebrate or recognize any of their holidays as national holidays?

I grew up in New York state and I don't recall ever getting any Jewish holidays off...I'm not Jewish BTW.

As for your 9/11 argument that's comparing apples to oranges. You compare your whining about a foreign holiday to 3,000 innocent people murdered? Man, you really have your priorities out of whack.

I also grew up in NY state and always get Jewish Holidays off. Please feel free to check all SUNY and CUNY holiday schedules. I never said we should celebrate anything as a national holiday. It was merely brought up as a point that we should celebrate it more, and that it should be recognized in the same respect as Jewish holidays, in that they are celebrated in areas of concentration.

My point about the "get over it" comment was that it is the worst statement that someone can make. You obviously can not tell someone to get over something they are passionate or care about. The only reason I ask for you religion/ethnicity was to make comparisons to Chinese New Year. I am only making an assumption, but I assume you celebrate Christmas. What if that holiday were taken away, a time where you would normally spend time with family and friends. That is what Chinese New Year is to many Asian Americans. It is a time for us to all get together and be together. It is not fair that a god damn quiz is stopping me from celebrating the holiday with families and friends. You don't just tell someone to "get over it".

Why is Christmas a national holiday in America? I'm sure Jesus wasn't born here, nor was the first Christmas celebrated here, but still its a holiday here. One should not need to sacrifice time with family and friends when some simple solution can be arrived at. There are 11 million asians across America and many of them celebrate the new year. This GREAT ECONOMY and COUNTRY also runs on the backs of the Asian community also, unfortunately you don't seem to understand that.

Getting used to people telling me to deal with it or get over it does not necessiarily mean that they are right. If it was my boss talking about a project or engagement, then fine. But when you start talking about religion/ethnicities, then you can't tell someone to just "get over it". Why don't you take your ignorant comments elsewhere. This thread was over until you trashed it.

To add to this, noone took your holidays away.....they are celebrated in China, you just CHOOSE not to live there. I understand and respect your desire to pass on your ancestral heritage you your kids but you are American now if you live here so that should be just as important. Noone is telling you that you can't raise your children with close ties to their Chinese heritage also but expecting a country like the US to have national holidays for every religion/ethnicity is impractical and not important to the vast majority of people. If local governments choose to then so be it but don't hold your breath. I live in Texas and the only place that has more Mexicans than us is Mexico.....and noone gets Cinco de Mayo off around here.

Asian doesn't necessarily mean Chinese ;)

In fact, Indians are sometimes said to be "Asian" in these polls/census/survey

Give me a break. I've had to work holidays before. Many people do. You aren't going to get much sympathy from me with that argument.

I never said it was right or fair. It's a fact of life!

Just because you don't like the message doesn't make me ignorant or wrong. DEAL WITH IT!!! :p

You make it sound like its so horrible to work through a holiday. Maybe because it is. You don't give sympathy because you don't understand, thats ok. However, the fact that you try answer a valid question with "This is America, get over it", instead of any valid truths, facts, or even decent opinions, your act like an ignorant a$$hole.
